Welcome to camp -- Camp Dracula, as Jeep Holmes jokingly calls it. Jeep may be joking, but he isn't laughing. He can't take this weird new summer place! Never mind that the counselors always wear dark glasses and the activities are all at night. What bothers him most are the other campers, a bunch of sickly-looking creeps who like to keep bats in the bunks! Why did his parents send him to this horrific place? Will Jeep make it through the summer without going batty?
You'll be dying to go to class at Graveyard School
So first, because of stuff going on tomorrow and Tuesday, I decided to do this today, as I am doing a Fear Street Wednesday and of course Animorphs on Thursday. Having now done Ripoff Month 2, I am reading through another round of the ones I covered. But this time, I used a randomizer to pick the order of the series and the one I did last got picked first. Usually I'd not do it that way but I figured since I knew I'd be doing the one camp entry I have access to (there are 3 total), I may as well get it out of the way.
I knew the plot already thanks to Tweets To Give you Goosebumps anyway lol. Anyway, I praised the interconnection aspect of the series and since this is taking place outside of the main town, I thought it was amusing I would follow that up with one that wouldn't use that. But this actually did have the protagonist reference continuity things, heck Skip gets a mention even. Nice.
The protagonist in question is Jeep (Yes) Holmes, who is going to Camp Westerra despite not being interesting. The camp feels odd, and things get worse with a bat attack. And as you can guess, he starts to think this camp is run by a vampies and soon his new friends start to become victims.
For the most part, this was pretty solid. I especially like the opening bit, the description and atmosphere was good there. It leans into that well, and there's good tension later on as things ramp out. The story is basic for sure, but that's not a bad thing since it doesn't bite off more than it can chew. The pacing is solid, not too much filler. There's a dream sequence but it's okay and far from terribly egregious I suppose.
The best thing going for this is the twist. There's one that first annoyed me when I read about it, but then they add something that saves it. It's honestly brilliant. It's a different kind of twist than usual and it works really well. It redeems some lesser aspects and bumps this one up.
However, it is a bit frustrating in another area. For the praise this series gets about character stuff, it could have been better. It reminded me of the Bone Chillers Teacher Creature book, where the main friend group starts off as annoying gets better/a bit more charming as it goes on. Jeep has some annoying moments of whining and Dawn has some too, and he has some towards her, as well as Martin since he's a geek.
The whole point is that grow tighter but it was still annoying early on and I feel it could have been executed better. I don't know, I guess I just prefer when there is less of the dick-ish moments, had this problem with Skip in Tragic School Bus too although less so tbh. Hopefully others will lean more into the better character stuff.
It's not like a big deal, but after a solid opening it did let me down for a bit until it picked back up. So overall, it is fairly solid with enough going for it, especially the twist which makes up for a lot. There's some annoying bits to get through but aside from that, it works well as a batty camp tale.
Those other camp books honestly sound cooler but no access so can't get to those for the time. being. As for next time on the ripoff month cycle, idk if I can fit one in next week do "work stuff" so it be the week after that, although I did fit it all in June. Either way, spoilers the wheel picked Fright Time so...yeah, we'll see how that goes.
In the meantime, Fear Street on Wednesday with a later entry.
I guess that I might use the term "guilty pleasure" for the first time :D I remember reading this series when I was a kid and absolutely loving it, since I was all for mystery/horror/adventure back then. I decided to pick it up out of nostalgia and obviously it didn't have the same impact now, but it was a quick fun read and the twists at the end was a plus :)
The first book in this series was bad, but it’s getting warm out, so I wanted to do another summer camp book. In a Dracula mood, too, since I just saw Renfield and it’s Dracula Daily soon, so this seemed perfect.
It was better than Don’t Eat the Mystery Meat, but not by much. I don’t really get how Jeep managed to survive, and the twist at the end really made no sense, considering we were in his head the whole time—why weren’t we privy to that information? THAT would have been a cool book, actually, instead of what ended up being a very forgettable story.
Hermoso, bueno, capaz no tanto pero es el primer libro que me compre y aun lo conservo en perfectas condiciones solo mas amarillo. 🧡🧡🧡 Es super infantil y prevesible pero recomendable para chicos de 10 u 11años
