Park Addams thinks it's going to be a great summer. He just made the all-star team, and it seems like they can't be beat--until they meet the Belville All-Stars. Shutout? Try wipeout! No-hitter? No one even sees the ball! How do they do it? The Grove Hill All-Stars are suddenly scared to death.
Welcome back to the ripoff round with Graveyard School. I ended up picking out another sports one so…here it goes, as there isn’t a ton to say.
Park Addams is on his town’s little league baseball team, the Grover Hill All Stars. The team is solid but Park does doubt his abilities. His friend Algie Green on the other hand is confident and solid. But soon Algie gets almost supernaturally good and starts being more vicious. Now Park must figure out what is going on.
This book pairs well with Scream Team for a few reasons. For one, Algie has a roll in both and we also have Park from the first book leading the way. The town of Belville plays a roll as well. The connections end there but being a sports book it does fit to pair them together, with this coming later. This is a good enough one but it’s on the lighter end of that.
It plays out like a normal sports story and doesn’t have a lot for horror. That’s fine but I’m not a big sports guy so it’ll have more appeal for other people compared to me. It is engaging enough but it’s not like these are super intense sports teams we’re dealing with. The aspect of Algie seeming to have made a deal to get better at baseball is a good one but it doesn’t explore it too much.
We don’t get a full explanation for what was going on over on his end but you get an idea at least. Park is likable enough with how he worries about screwing up. I enjoyed the villain out of what we got, his name is Paul T Giest, cute. The ending works alright although it is abrupt. Kinda nice though.
It’s a totally fine book that just lacks what it needs to be a bigger standout. It’s a good enough sports story with some fun bits and a solid lead, it just doesn’t quite dig into the ideas and feels basic as a result. It has enough to be good but it is on the lower end of that. But again if you’re more into baseball, you might get into it more.
As for me, it worked, just not to a huge extent. Graveyard School is fun, just seems to usually lack that extra something in the stories, like this one.
That does it for this book. Next we visit Bone Chillers as we wind down on it, meaning we have two left out of what I have access to. And with it come some killer clowns, but not from outer space, sadly.
