This is extraordinary. I usually read plays in one sitting, but I had to stop and sit with this one every few scenes. It is so raw and honest and does not hold back from the truth of cruelty. Although you have a sense early on of roughly what will happen in the end, the play is still deeply shocking.
The writing is incredibly effective in extracting emotion from the reader. The ending had me frozen in place. And a lot of the time I was just stunned into silence by what was happening...
I really loved this play. Like REALLY loved it. I'm not normally someone who reads plays, but I've read this one at least a dozen times this year. I just keep picking it up.
I directed this play in 2003. A highly rewarding experience for all involved. Doug's final monologue is a treat and will leave no dry eye in the house.
