Now a hit animated series on Nickelodeon and Paramount+, Big Nate delights middle grade readers with stories of mischief and misadventure in these full-color comics featuring sixth grader Nate Wright and friends at P.S. 38.
Big Nate is a legend at P.S. 38, where he and friends Francis, Teddy, Dee Dee, Chad, and others manage to make sixth grade interesting with all kinds of pranks, drama, sports, and good times. The all-time leader in detentions, Nate is never far from the spotlight, whether it's for a freak injury on the soccer field, Halloween costume fail, or stirring up a new episode in his long-running rivalry with grade-grubbing Gina or his teacher nemesis, Mrs. Godfrey. This new collection of Big Nate comics from Lincoln Peirce includes over 170 full-color comics and abundant laughs for the whole family.
Lincoln Peirce is a cartoon artist from Portland, Maine. He lives with his wife and two children, and occasionally gives lectures to students about cartoon creating. Peirce writes the comic strip "Big Nate". Peirce's comic strip, Big Nate, is featured as an island on the famous children's website, Poptropica. Big Nate appears as the first cartoon on The Maine Sunday Telegram in the comics section.
He studied art at Colby College in Maine were he began cartooning. He also studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture before teaching art and coaching basketball at a New York highschool for 3 years. He currently plays hockey with "an old men's league" and describes it as his best sport as a child. In an interview with the Washington Post, Peirce stated that his last name is pronounced "purse" and is not a misspelling of "pierce."
Lincoln Peirce was a member of the "Surviving as a Print Cartoonist" Panel at the Maine Comics Art Festival with fellow cartoonists Corey Pandolph (Barkeater Lake, Toby: Robot Satan, The Elderberries), Norm Feuri (Retail, Gill) and with Mike Lynch moderating. On the panel Lincoln revealed he is currently working with some animation and licensing projects including the addition of a Big Nate island to the online game Poptropica.
My 9Y0 gives it 2 thumbs up and a 5 out of 5 stars, mainly just because of the brand name, so great job on creating a fan base. But he also gave that rating after only a few pages in…
👎🏼 I deducted a star for no intrinsic value, I much prefer Middle Grade books with a valuable lesson that is obvious to the reader at such an impressionable age.
This is my first Big Nate book. I’ve read numerous complaints from other parents on their children starting to act out after reading this series, and while I can’t say I can relate to that, I just don’t find any real value to the story.
🥴 It is like a collage of comics all mashed together, but the story literally jumps from one scene to another without any warning. One minute they are at school, the next they are somewhere else. I was so confused, I had to re-read certain parts to decipher if it was the same storyline or another. There should be better segregation between scenes, better flow, streamlined stories, etc.
It’s just confusing and perpetuates the idea of not staying focused on anything for long. I do NOT like this for my child, and for that reason I deduct a second star.
🤷🏻♀️ But overall, it’s the kids opinion that rules the ratings, and kids give this a whopping 5/5 before even reading, so I guess that says it all.
Thanks to NetGalley, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and Lincoln Pierce for providing me with a complimentary ARC to review.
I have read every one of the Big Nate books and enjoy every one of them. I love the antics of Nate in middle school with his friends. And love seeing the trouble he gets into with the adults. I can't wait to read the next one in the series when it releases.
Thank you to #netgalley for a copy of this book to read and review.
Big Nate graphic novels are popular in my elementary school. I have most of the series on the shelves and this will be a good addition. The art work is always colorful and enhances the story. Bit Nate is a perpetual 6th grader who loves hanging out with his friends and avoiding school work. In this one he is upset that he has things in common with his teacher, has a messy locker challenge, team gets a new name, pulls a few pranks etc. These are geared towards upper elementary school age kids 8-12. I find them mindless fun and there are always a few lines in there to entertain a grown-up reader. Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the temporary ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
My son got me reading the Big Nate series when he was in elementary school, and I have happily kept reading them into his teen years. He still enjoys them too, so we will typically buy them when they are released. So, it was nice to get. a chance to do a pre-release read through of the latest book and to offer some thoughts.
All in all, this was a great addition to the series. All of the characters you are expecting pop in, but as I have said in previous reviews, I find I get the most enjoyment out of the books when the whole collection follows a strong theme. And that when it's a bit more random or full of disparate themes, I am a little disappointed. That's not to say that I don't like the story, but that it tends to drop me to a 4 star rating. And this was one of those volumes. It did flow well, and there were a lot of linked story lines, but all in all, there was no real unifying flow. Maybe that it covered a whole year of school, but I'm not sure it did.
I loved the story that kicked it off, which was the messy locker war, and I had fun with the new name for their team. Chuckled aloud.
My son was very jealous of me getting to read this, and he is already asking me to pre-order, so I guess that's a good sign given that he is now well into his teen years and only seems to read these books willingly. And that is a real way to measure how much fun these are, because he reads nothing willingly. Except maybe a video game cut scene.
WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS CHAD SPORTING A REALLY COOL BEARD THAT'S ONE HUNDRED PERCENT AUTHENTIC
I always enjoy a good Big Nate book and this one was no exception!
This book's compilation of comic strips includes a story of Nate and Kim exploring a haunted house, the gang protesting the laying off of Nate's favorite teacher, School Prank Day (always a favorite), a legendary Slob-Off and much more!
Honestly this one was probably one of my favorite Big Nate comic books, it made me laugh way too much!
This was an eARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
My children have read every single Big Nate books and I have read a few of them with them. I was excited to see a new one coming out and read it myself to see if it continued with its hilarious antics. It does! They will not be disappointed. I love when they get a Big Nate book and I can't wait until I hear the sounds of my older son reading this one to my younger son. It always ends in fits of giggles coming from their room. Peirce writes humor for kids well and honestly, they make me laugh too.
The illustrations are in their signature style for this series and as always, they just add to the funny storyline!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Big Nate is back for another instalment of 6th grade fun and games in Big Nate: This Means War!
From locker wars to haunted houses , the eternal struggle with academics, baseball and summer holiday pranks, this is is another fun comic that hearkens back to Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes, with a 21st century twist (including one standalone strip of "Covid Kid"!) .
Another thoroughly enjoyable book from Lincoln Peirce.
~ Many thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~
A new selection of the comic strips – well, while nobody buys or doesn't buy any of these books on a review's say-so, it is helpful to know if this is the strip or the book-of-the-TV-programme series. Here, Nate is disgusted at having similarities with a certain social studies teacher, hates the results when his comic shop starts sponsoring the ball team, and loathes the idea the art teacher gets cut from the curriculum. It's all just Nate Wright fun as expected – and a strong four stars as expected.
I read this book with my 10 year old. He's an advanced reader and enjoyed the humor in this book. He did have other Big Nate books in his library so he was excited to be able to read a book that's not been published yet.
I really enjoy Nate, and him getting up to his shenanigans whether it's having locker slob wars, trying to make his teachers laugh, dealing with crushes, and end of the year pranks. Also, can we say grandma is the real hero of the story! 🤣
Good, clean humor for the whole family. Loved it! Thank you NetGalley and publisher for the ARC!
My 2nd grader LOVES Big Nate and was so excited we scored this ARC-- thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for allowing us the opportunity to read this. Big Nates have become so popular with my son and his friends, he reads one a week from the school library and has yet to find one he didn't love. 'This Means War!' holds true to the Big Nate reputation-- it was an appropriate read, funny, silly and enjoyable. My child and I will often read together before bed, and I found this book enjoyable too!
I downloaded this book for my 10 year old son who has read several of the previous Big Nate comic books. He finished this one in one day. I also looked over his shoulder and read a few panels that he pointed out to me. They were pretty funny! He says it’s not necessary for anyone to have read all the previous books to enjoy this one. He really loved it and looks forward to more in the future. Thank you #netgalley for providing the e-galley in return for an honest review.
This is hilarious, filled with so many laugh-out-loud and snort-out-loud moments! It reads just like all the previous Big Nate graphic novels, it is fun, it is entertaining, it is silly, it is fast-paced, it is a real page turner that will keep any kid glued to the pages. Drawings are consistent with the previous books, text goes hand in hand also, it is perfect. I’m absolutely sure every elementary school and middle grade age kid who gets this book will enjoy it.
Nate has a new rival. Kyle is trying to claim messiest locker at school. But Nate might just have a few things up his sleeve. Or, you know, in his locker. Lots of touchbacks to previous stories in the series. Two storylines even overlap when Klassic Komix agrees to sponsor Nate's baseball team. Of course, it doesn't go the way that Nate expects when Wayne chooses the name of an unexpected character.
I like the cover design for this one. However, the comics are a bit odd, like the one where Nate mentions Ms. Godfrey sharing similar interests to him "from a couple of months ago," when in fact I remember it being a point in an older collection. Nate battling it out with Kyle's locker may seem amusing, but it isn't the most to find. I understand Peirce might be low of ideas now but at least try and get Nate into a funny situation!
This was my first Big Nate but it hopefully won't be my last. So much fun! I was actually laughing out loud reading the antics of the kids trying to save art class and make all the kids smile and when they had a slob off to see who was the biggest slob... Thanks so much to NetGalley for letting me read this hilarious graphic novel
If you love Big Nate, you will love this addition to the series. He and his friends deal with school, baseball season, and even go to the beach in this next installment of the beloved graphic novel series.
Thanks Net Galley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the temporary copy to review.
Big Nate is challenged by Klye to a slob -off for the messiest school locker, but that's just the appetizer in this fun- filled collection of Big Nate and his rousing hi-jinks in this laugh-out loud read.
Lincoln pierce is basically a copy of Shultz the writer of peanuts, he has been making masterpieces book after book after book. This review can go out to all Big Nate books.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this book. My kids love Big Nate books and I know will enjoy this one. Nate is at it again with his antics!
