Avocado seeds and slow growing! A young girl’s impatience turns to wonder as she and her avocado tree gradually change and grow in this story inspired by Israeli artist Taltal Levi’s childhood.
Ellie is sulking—she celebrated her birthday yesterday under the old avocado tree. But she’s not even a little bit taller today! Dad tells Ellie a secret. She is like the pit of an avocado, he explains, small and full of magic. Together they put an avocado seed in a glass of water by the window and watch as both Ellie and her avocado plant grow, take root, and eventually bring new life.
In Taltal Levi’s native country Israel, avocados are ubiquitous and plucked straight from the tree. In her third book, Taltal Levi uses warm, earthy colors to tell a personal yet universal story about the magic of growth.
Includes instructions for growing your own avocado tree!
The millennial in me will request anything with avocados. I’m not sorry. However, this turned out to be a rather deep story about believing in yourself, which is a great message for everyone.
This really has the makings to be a sweet book. The illustrations and way the story is written seems to target ages 4-10ish I’d say, except for one part…
As we follow Ellie in learning a kind lesson from her father about being patient and learning that magnificent things can grow from the smallest of seeds, my heart warms.
My 5 and 7 year old however kept asking why Ellie had to leave her family (she grew up and moved out but this feels rushed in my opinion and unnecessary). Yes I get it could be a great way to share with kids that eventually they will have their own freedom and families, but at this particular age it was a little more distressing for my two. Minus that and I think it would be a beautiful read through and through.
Bonus little illustration of how to grow an avocado at the end was awesome! The kids loved it.
ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much for the opportunity to review!
Amazing Avocado vibes illustrations, avocado goodness and a lot of avocado patience!
This book is about teaching kids the importance of patience and how to plant an avocado. Yes, kids and adults are impatient for everything. The father in the story does a good job in handling this issue.
Yes, it’s time to know more about nature and its course.
Love the idea. Love the lessons.
Thank you, NorthSouth Books, for the advance reading copy.
There is nothing particularly special about Avocado Magic. You can probably find a dozen books like it about being patient and waiting for things (and kids) to grow. This story takes us from our little girl being very young, all the way up to having her own children.
I’m not a fan of stories that go this far into adulthood. I think this extended view into a child’s future places expectations on the child. In this case the idea is that the child will also have children. In todays society I feel this assumption is not appropriate or truthful anymore. Between fertility issues, miscarriages, and premature babies, I just don’t see why we are setting little girls (or boys) up with the expectation they will have a baby of their own. For myself, this expectation when I was young was very hurtful later in life when I learned (in my early 20s) I couldn’t carry to term. It took me awhile to realize I only thought I wanted a baby because everyone assumed I would. But as an infertile woman, I began to realize I wasn’t obsessed with having a baby; everyone else was. That gave me space to accept my infertility in a new way. Had the expectation not been so ingrained in me as a child to have a baby, I believe I could have avoid a lot of grief and confusion as an adult.
That said, this book is similar to so many in its set-up and execution. So I suppose if avocados are your absolute favourite, or your child’s favourite, then this could be a good choice. I don’t get the avocado craze of the last couple years personally; they are tasty but not worthy of being on my socks, toys, etc. I’d personally pass on this one as it just doesn’t provide anything new or interesting to a child’s repertoire or library.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
Avocado is a cute book that shares a message about patience and growth. A little girl is ready to grow taller and is disappointed that on her birthday she's not noticeably older. Her father explains to her that growth takes time and just like an avocado seed she will grow. So she takes care of that avocado seed and watches the plant grow and grow over the years until it becomes a big avocado tree that she's sharing with her own daughter.
I didn't know what to expect from this picture book. But I do know that I wanted something a little humorous and entertaining. Avocado Magic was none of those things.
Though I loved the colorful illustrations, I didn't quite like the narrative. It was a little boring for me. However, I did like the part about growing an avocado tree from seed. That was very educational and informative.
I get that the book provides a lesson in patience, but I feel that a more humorous angle would have been a better approach to capture a pre-schooler's attention. Two okay stars.
I received a DRC from NorthSouth Books through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
I was moved by this beautifully illustrated children’s book. Ellie has a birthday and is disappointed the next day that she isn’t taller. Instead her dad compares her to an avocado seed and together prepare one to be planted. The lesson is patience which she learns as it grows slowly. But the illustrations of her growing along with it and her taking it with her as a companion in life hit me emotionally. I see in other reviews of people reading it with their children. I instead thought of my almost 30 year old daughter who spends a few hours every week tending her plant babies. This is a lovely story and the illustrations caught me more than the words. It also includes directions on sprouting your own avocado. Thank you to NorthSouth Books for sending me the ARC via NetGalley and I am leaving an honest review.
I discovered Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi on the Children's Literacy Assembly website through the class wakelet. It also was named one of the Chicago Public Library Best Board and Picture Books of 2024. I borrowed a print copy from my local library to read. This book was originally published in Germany in 2023 under the title "Bravo, Avocado!" and the English-langauge edition was published on March 5, 2024.
Avocado Magic follows a young girl named Ellie who celebrates her birthday every year under her family's old avocado tree. Disappointed she hasn't grown taller with her new age, Ellie's father compares her to an avocado pit: small, but full of magic. Together, they plant an avocado seed in a glass of water and watch it slowly sprout. This teaches Ellie the value of growth and patience, which is a lesson that young readers can also take to heart. I believe this book would be ideal for K-2 or any early elementary classroom. The story comes full circle as Ellie, now grown, continues the family tradition by planting an avocado tree in her own yard and celebrates the birthday of her son under it.
This book offers a variety of meaningful ways to engage students. Like Ellie's family tradition of celebrating birthdays under the avocado tree, students can share their own family or cultural traditions. This would help build classroom community and connections among students in the beginning of the school year. This story also supports social-emotional learning, highlighting patience and perseverance by showing that growth takes time. Additionally, it works well as a mentor text during writing, with pop-out words and sound words that students can include in their own stories to make their writing more expressive and engaging.
This is a warm story with lovely and moralistic conversations between a girl and her father.
Being child, Ellie was worried that her birthday passed but her height didn't vary. She complained her father about it. Here comes the parenting. Her Father took a realistic approach to let her understand the fact for how things work in real life. There is a miracle in life in everything but can't be seen through naked eyes. He had shown her the way an avocado seed nourishes under sunlight, dipped in water.
She thoughly understand the process and enjoy while it started sprouting. They have to move the plant from one to another place and then eventually transplant the tree to a bigger feild, with time. She became older but that fact remains and she passes on the knowledge and its pattern to grasp, to her children also.
This is an amazing work by Taltal Levi, and I wonder how exciting it would be to her, as the excerpt says, it was inspired from her own childhood.
Avocado Magic is a story about having patience and growing up. Ellie is sulking. It was her birthday yesterday and she hasn't grown up. She is the same size as the day before her birthday. Her father tells her a secret. As they sit under their avocado tree, he tells her she is like the pit of an avocado. It is small, but full of magic or potential. She has to be patient. They place the seed in a glass of water by the window and each day watch it grow. The message of course, is realizing potential and not to rush growing up. The illustrations are delightful and I enjoyed the symbolism of the avocado. The back of the book has an illustration and direction for growing your own avocado which is a nice bonus, unfortunately, we can't grow them in our area due to our weather. Overall a cute book that I will read to my rather impatient grandchildren when I return home.
I received a free copy of, Avocado Magic, by Taltal Levi, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Ellie is not happy that she has not grown, the day after her birthday, being a whole year older, and the same size is shocking to Ellie. This is a book about patience, which is still hard to deal with whether your a child or an adult. A great story with a good message, and a science experiment too.
Avocado Magic was a charming illustration children book about growing up. Together with Ellie and her father, our little readers will exploring this topic from interesting approach. The author explains how growing up as magical process and take symbolism from the growth of Avocado seed. The illustrations are modern and vibrant with beautiful autumn colors. The narrate was gentle and will easily charm little readers to read more.
"The magic always moves and always flows. It is hard to see and rather slow."
Thank you Netgalley and North South Books Inc for provided me with this ebook. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
“Dad smiled. "Shall I tell you a secret? You, Ellie, are like an avocado seed: small but full of magic."”
This book contains: avocado seeds, patience, growth and time.
Ohhh this was such a cute children’s book! In this book, a father explains to his daughter that her growth is very slow, but it is there. So to help her understand, they sprout together an avocado seed to show her how slow growth can be. It’s a book that teaches children to be patient and show them how we grow slowly! I personally loved this story and the example her father used to make her understand. It’s a beautiful example that I might use with my kids in the future. I also loved how the author included instructions to sprout your own avocado. It looks like a good activity to do with your children and you can look at the sprout’s growth together. The only thing I would change about this story is related to the part where Ellie grew up and went away, and eventually had her own children. I believe this could be confusing to some children, so I personally would focus on the growth from a small child to a bigger kid, and then they would pass the message to a younger sibling or cousin. I just think the “grown up” part could be confusing, so keeping a child perspective from this book would be better in my humble opinion. The illustrations are stunning and the color scheme focuses on green tones. If I have children one day and they learn English, I’m going to show them this book! Definitely recommend this one for you and your kids - as well as the fun book activity that you can do together.
***A big thank you to NetGalley for the free ARC in exchange for an honest review***
Thank you NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for accepting my request to read and review Avocado Magic.
Muted illustrations consistent with the coloring of an avocado are seen. The story references growth. The author has shared the process of growing an avocado from seed, successfully.
This is a nice story with several parental teaching opportunities. I would gift this as a family gift.
I was expecting something sweet but simple. This was so much more than that. It was surprisingly deep for being a children's book about a tree. The illustrations were sweet and the story was something that could easily become a tradition. In fact, I am sad I didn't think of this before my kids were grown. I don't consider myself a sentimental person, but this book had me tearing up.
I was looking for some new picture books to read with my son. He's 3, so on the young side for this book, but he still really enjoyed it!
Avocado Magic follows Ellie, who is disappointed to find that upon waking up the day after her birthday, she still hadn't grown any taller. Her father then uses an avocado seed to teach her about patience, and that wonderful things can grow from a small seed.
We loved the illustrations, my son especially liked the full page spread at the beginning where Ellie is talking to her friends and there is an explosion of different things coming out of the avocado seed. He really enjoyed pointing out everything he could see.
I liked the repetition of the phrase the magic always moves and always flows; it's hard to see, and rather slow. We need to wait and let it grow. This is something that I could see him being able to recite back if I were to read this to him many times, something that is helpful for children learning to read.
We also LOVED the instruction pages at the back on how to sprout your own avocado! We've been very into gardening lately and are now considering trying to grow our own avocado tree.

A big thank you goes out to NetGalley for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi. I'm always looking for great children's books to recommend to friends and family with little ones, so I was excited to read this book and will definitely be recommending it.
I love that Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi helps kids understand that all things come in time with a little patience. Another thing that I liked about the story is it shows a family that has its own traditions like having birthdays under their avocado tree . . . a tradition that is shown to continue when the child starts their own family.
Five out of five stars is what I gave Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi. Even though I am an adult, I enjoyed this picture book, and I know I would have absolutely loved it as a little kid. This is a definite read for kids between the ages of three and five.
This book is absolutely adorable. It’s the story of Ellie and how she spends her birthday expecting to be more grown quickly. Her dad helps her to see growing up can be magical but takes time with the help of an avocado seed. While at first, she is frustrated, Ellie begins to see the magic of the avocado seed and how they’ll grow together.
This is a fabulous book to show how growing up can be magical and also a time to be treated with care. Ellie cares for the avocado seed and herself and they both flourish. Seeing the steps of growing up and the avocado seed responding are a strong way to show how growing up is a process. Overall, this is a wonderful book.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
This book was absolutely beautiful in everyway. The artwork was so lovely to look at and we really enjoyed seeing all the little details that had been added into each page. The story also made me rather emotional and I really enjoyed reading this to my littles.
What a huge twist of fate it was that today I bought the same amount of avocados as children I have so it is going to be so incredibly fun taking the details at the end of the book and growing our own trees!!
This book is definitely going in my recommended books for all to enjoy.
I received an electronic ARC from NorthSouth Books Inc. through NetGalley. Beautifully written story of a child who is impatient to grow. Her wise father compares growth to an avocado seed and sets one to sprout and grow. By watching this seed, Ellie learns patience and to watch for small signs of change. Readers watch as the child and the seed grow together. The tree is transplanted just as Ellie grows and changes too. Love the ending when the cycle begins again. The artwork is lovely and captures the joy and love in this family. Levi includes directions to sprout your own seed at the end.
The day after her birthday, Ellie is shocked to discover that she isn't any bigger than yesterday. Her father understands what's going on and helps her plant an avocado seed. He tells her it's magic, but day after day, the little brown seed does nothing. Ellie is ready to give up, but if she can persevere, she'll see a magic she wasn't expecting.
A soft, cozy story. The conflict isn't all that compelling, but the text is gentle and the main concept very sweet. I really liked the ending.
My daughter and I really loved this book about a little girl called Ellie, whose Dad gives her an avocado seed to grow. He explains to her how they grow slowly, just like she does. This is a touching story, with beautiful illustrations showing Ellie and her avocado, and how they grow up together over the years. There is also a section at the end which shows you how to grow an avocado. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
Thank you Netgalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This story feels like a warm hug.
Avocado Magic is about love, family, growing up and finding your path. The art style is stunning, the colors are beautiful an helped me feel like I was being transported inside the story. Even though it's short, it leaves a clear message of love and hope.
If you’ve ever tried to sprout your own avocado you’ll relate to Ellie and this story. A beautiful story, wonderfully illustrated, it’s an exceptional gentle tale about the magic of and patience needed when growing up. The prose is fantastic and this is a must addition to your child’s selection of books.
I really loved the premise of this book and I think it teaches a great lesson about growing at your own pace, and that the magic that is within you always!. The artwork was absolutely beautiful, and I'm honored I was able to read and review this!
A wonderful simple children’s book about patience, nature, and how to plant an avocado. The illustrations are beautiful and it’s full of colour. It made me want to grow an avocado tree! A very sweet story.

Avocado Magic by Taltal Levi is a colourful, charming tale inspired by the author's own experience growing up in Israel.
Ellie is sulking. It is her birthday and, as she does every year, she stands under the avocado tree waiting to grow. When she does not, it is up to her father to explain that, like the avocado seed, the magic is inside, and she must wait to grow and flourish.
This is a lovely picture book full of earth-inspired illustrations that are sure to appeal to readers of all ages. It is a timeless and universal story that children will be asking to read again and again.
Many thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for an ARC.
This was a lovely book about being a child [and learning to enjoy being a child], patience, and how we grow [using an avocado from a beloved avocado tree that they sit under for parties and the such] and all the beauty we see along the way. It is a lovely story between a father and a daughter and then the daughter and her child when the daughter has grown. Filled with absolutely gorgeous illustrations and an author's note at the end on how to sprout an avocado seed to grow your own tree, this is a lovely book that littles will go back to again and again. Very well done.
I was asked to read/review this book by the publisher, NorthSouth Book, INC and I thank them and the author, Taltal Levi for providing the book in exchange for an honest review.
