Before he was Sherlock’s rival, Moriarty fought against the unfair class caste system in London by making sure corrupt nobility got their comeuppance. But even the most well-intentioned plans can spin out of control—will Moriarty’s dream of a more just and equal world turn him into a hero…or a monster?
Three years after the fateful night when William and Sherlock disappeared under the waves of the Thames, MI6 takes on a covert mission to stop a leak of sensitive information that could disrupt the balance of power between Great Britain and Russia. One stray bullet winds up revealing the existence of someone unexpected hiding behind the scenes, however. As rumblings of a great world war begin, it may finally be time to repent for the crimes of the past…
Apparently Sherlock and Moriarty Prime going off the bridge wasn’t the end game after all, and everybody else is still at it, but with a slightly different mission. Which is fine until it suddenly puts them at cross purposes with an old friend, who seems to be sticking to the methods that they used to use…
Boy, it just keeps on going. I guess it’s manga so I shouldn’t be surprised, but you really could have put a pin in things with the last volume and left it on a decent enough note.
It’s not like this needs to justify its existence, but it does anyway. There’s not a ton of actual change, except the gang is now trying not to kill people and they’re preserving the world versus trying to change it. All in an effort to atone for, you know, the incredible amount of killing they did.
But, it’s fundamentally the same series as before. There’s a little more gender politics and we’re now looking to the First World War, with submarines playing a huge role, or at least their blueprints, and that’s about it.
They seem to completely ignore that Von Herder literally gins up communication earpieces this volume and could probably disrupt the world order himself six times over rather than worrying about submarines, but I suppose that’s no huge surprise.
I will say that the first mission has a pretty excellent ending, nice swerve there, and brings back even more of the old cast in a more unique way than could have been, providing a little more friction.
Everything else is par for course - everybody looks like everybody else with different hairstyles, the plots are wild, and the stuff they bring into this is just crackers. And, in the case of Billy the Kid, highly annoying.
Nothing wrong with it if you liked what came before, but nothing to suddenly make you think you were wrong this whole time either. It is consistent, certainly, which remains a blessing and a curse.
3 stars - not my favourite shonen by a long shot and just picking right up after the big climactic plotline can’t help but feel a little pedestrian, even if it’s not especially different. I wouldn’t have said this needed more, but it doesn’t embarrass itself providing it.
TW/CW: murder, blood & gore, sexual assault, violence
Whew!!! The 3-year time-skip is finally here! So far, so good! We have a new leader, therefore a brand new modus operandi. Moran was MIA and acting out until William’s status was revealed to him. So I understand how he feels after his "death." Of course, he would feel indebted to the former leader, who once saved his life. I’m glad that we have our Moran back on the team!!
Louis is no longer living in his brother’s shadow. It’s nice to finally see him lead for once. We have rarely seen him in action before this. He is usually in the background. This time, he is working closely with Mycroft Holmes upon joining MI6.
Sherlock's triumphant return made me wonder, like, excuse me, sir? We are curious about what transpired after the fall. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Maybe wait for William’s return? Everyone’s happy that William’s still alive. Gosh, I absolutely love the new dynamics where everyone works together. I love the unity and collaboration. They still want to make England a better place, but this time, the wrongdoers will get lawful justice.
We need more Herder and Moneypenny scenes in this new arc, please. There's so much potential. I hope they won’t flop on this return. The next volume is going to focus on Albert. My heart already hurts.
I really wish that they would have shown some snippets during the 3-year period that passed. This volume seems rushed somehow. Also, how did everyone feel about Louis being in charge? Where has Moran been all this time? What did Sherlock do with William and Billy in the US or during their travels? I have so many questions!
Minęło 3 lata od pojedynku Moriartyego i Sherlocka, każdy zaczął żyć, jedni dobrze inny źle. Wraz z nowymi i starymi bohaterami rozpoczynamy nowy ark.
Okay, series, you want me to ship William and Sherlock? Fine. I'll do it. Even though William has no lines in this volume, and indeed is never seen from the front, the way Sherlock interacts with him is an impressive indicator of capital "f" Feelings, and it works quite well with the way that the other characters have lionized the missing-presumed-dead man. Although this wasn't the strongest volume, I'm still interested to see how the rest of the story will unfold.
3 years after the incident in vol 14. . . My heart burst in Vol 14 - it was such an emotional ride.
This tells the tale of what happened/happening with the other characters, their growth and acceptance of a new world that Moriarty tried to build. And the continuation of his dream.
"The age when one can get away with looking down on others because of their gender is coming to an end."
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Story is starting a fresh journey now that William's goal has been met. I can understand why they have him off screen but I really wanted to have some Liam+Sherlock fan service lol. 😆
Personal desires aside, I really do hope we get the lost episodes Sherlock mentioned in his reintroduction. I also hope he checks in with Watson.
Volume focusing on the work of MI6, with the secondary characters becoming more important. Everyone has their own role in the revamped secret service. Ha ha, in the late 1800s they were already transmitting rotating headsets! Way ahead of their time. Someone, however, remains anchored in the past. And Watson? Sherlock does not seem to care, nor does he ask how his old friend is. Always nice drawings
I definitely enjoyed this volume. I was curious how the series would continue after the climax at the bridge. I have also had a small gap in reading the series, so it was nice to come back after a break the same as the characters. It is nice to see them continuing the campaign to make the world better but in a safer way for them. Then out pops Sherlock to also aid in this new way of continuing the team’s mission. I’m just waiting for Watson to pop back in.
One of many reasons why alterinative history and alt. take on literature classics are fun and interesting. Am not having no regrets for reading this series. It's very interesting take on Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty's story and loving the fact that the end is not the end.
Finnish edition wants to end to volume 15 but that's luckily won't be the case.
