Too scared, too ashamed, to say it. Before, I was the unraped. Now I am the raped. The finality of that change struck complete fear in me. There was no in-between.As far as unravellings are concerned, Jaded explores the trauma and loneliness of sexual assault and all the myriad ways in which this is exacerbated for women who are already trained to feel shame and guilt about the particulars of their personhood. Indeed, we see how Ceyda, despite her relative privilege, needs to make herself small in order to be taken seriously: as a woman at her workplace, as a woman of colour in a relationship with a white man, as a woman who grew up working-class in an arena rigged in favour of those with generational wealth; as the daughter of immigrants who have only been able to get by through immense personal sacrifice.
