Rate this book
A fascinating insight into the chronology of the people, places, and events in the Bible.

The rich history of the Bible is captured by the use of timelines, maps, images, and diagrams that chart the earliest origins of the text to the present day. Along with scholarly commentary on the Bible and its myriad translations,  Timeline of the Bible  includes five foldout wall charts that reveal the chronology of the people, places, and events that shaped the early days of Christianity. Full-color photographs and detailed discussion of the origins, key figures, and authors make this a valuable addition to the library of anyone with an interest in learning more about how the Bible came to be the most important book in history.

I’ve loved history timelines and other such charts ever since I was a young child. I find them to be useful frameworks that can be continually referred to as one digs deeper into a given subject.

I began making my own charts while working as an expat teacher and school director for 8 years in rural Sri Lanka. I recently completed a PhD in Education and now live in Vancouver, Canada where I design and publish educational wallcharts full-time.

Highly recommend if you want some foundational background that is based on scholarship but not bias for or against any particular claims

A secular but fair and balanced tour of the entire Bible timeline with ample illustration. An expert would find this content basic but for the rest of us, it's a really great tool for linking the books of the Bible to the events that took place in history.

The charts, which are probably the draw for most people, are great although I do wish there were more guides given for why certain lines are perhaps curved vs dotted or different colors. I do also wish they had verse numbers for the various connections. Also some people are missing photos right next to people who have an illustration. Why?

Some of the pictures in the book are low quality right next to crystal clear images. So I think in some cases only the thumbnails of the image were used rather than the full resolution, which is a shame.

All that being said, I can't wait to pull this book out and show it to people!

Excellent academic and unbiased overview of Biblical History, goes over the traditional and academic consensus on various founding stories and the different books of the Bible.

The charts and illustrations are quite polished and easy to follow.

I follow this historian on YouTube and have always appreciated his succinct explanations along with many academic citations to back it up. It was while I was preparing for a trip to Israel with historical research that I started noticing the major discrepancies between the experts in archeology and those in “Biblical archeology.” I then learned what legitimate historical verification actually entailed and realized that much of Biblical archeology during the Bronze Age was pseudoscience, which really piqued my interest in discerning the truth behind the advent of the great religions. Matt Baker is known for his incredibly helpful infographics which allow me to keep the dozens of major events between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age sorted in my own mind. (A)

While this book has great information, the fact the he barely mentions the book of Daniel is baffling to me. Daniel was a major prophet who literally prophesied the end times and no mention of that. He puts Daniel in the category of "writings". I guess he either never read Daniel or is just not getting the importance of the book of Daniel. Highly disappointing. Daniel isn't even mentioned on the timeline charts. Even more disappointing. The book itself is decent, but he completely missed the mark on Daniel.
