Books published under the following names - Virginia Andrews, V. Andrews, Virginia C. Andrews & V.C. Endrius. Books since her death ghost written by Andrew Neiderman, but still attributed to the V.C. Andrews name

Virginia Cleo Andrews (born Cleo Virginia Andrews) was born June 6, 1923 in Portsmouth, Virginia. The youngest child and the only daughter of William Henry Andrews, a career navy man who opened a tool-and-die business after retirement, and Lillian Lilnora Parker Andrews, a telephone operator. She spent her happy childhood years in Portsmouth, Virginia, living briefly in Rochester, New York. The Andrews family returned to Portsmouth while Virginia was in high school.

While a teenager, Virginia suffered a tragic accident, falling down the stairs at her school and incurred severe back injuries. Arthritis and a failed spinal surgical procedure forced her to spend most of her life on crutches or in a wheelchair.

Virginia excelled in school and, at fifteen, won a scholarship for writing a parody of Tennyson's Idylls of the King. She proudly earned her diploma from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth. After graduation, she nurtured her artistic talent by completing a four-year correspondence art course while living at home with her family.

After William Andrews died in the late 1960s, Virginia helped to support herself and her mother through her extremely successful career as a commercial artist, portrait painter, and fashion illustrator.

Frustrated with the lack of creative satisfaction that her work provided, Virginia sought creative release through writing, which she did in secret. In 1972, she completed her first novel, The Gods of the Green Mountain [sic], a science-fantasy story. It was never published. Between 1972 and 1979, she wrote nine novels and twenty short stories, of which only one was published. "I Slept with My Uncle on My Wedding Night", a short fiction piece, was published in a pulp confession magazine.

Promise gleamed over the horizon for Virginia when she submitted a 290,000-word novel, The Obsessed, to a publishing company. She was told that the story had potential, but needed to be trimmed and spiced up a bit. She drafted a new outline in a single night and added "unspeakable things my mother didn't want me to write about." The ninety-eight-page revision was re-titled Flowers in the Attic and she was paid a $7,500 advance. Her new-generation Gothic novel reached the bestseller lists a mere two weeks after its 1979 paperback publication by Pocket Books.

Petals on the Wind, her sequel to Flowers, was published the next year, earning Virginia a $35,000 advance. The second book remained on the New York Times bestseller list for an unbelievable nineteen weeks (Flowers also returned to the list). These first two novels alone sold over seven million copies in only two years. The third novel of the Dollanganger series, If There Be Thorns, was released in 1981, bringing Virginia a $75,000 advance. It reached No. 2 on many bestseller lists within its first two weeks.

Taking a break from the chronicles of Chris and Cathy Dollanganger, Virginia published her one, and only, stand-alone novel, My Sweet Audrina, in 1982. The book welcomed an immediate success, topping the sales figures of her previous novels. Two years later, a fourth Dollanganger novel was released, Seeds of Yesterday. According to the New York Times, Seeds was the best-selling fiction paperback novel of 1984. Also in 1984, V.C. Andrews was named "Professional Woman of the Year" by the city of Norfolk, Virginia.

Upon Andrews's death in 1986, two final novels—Garden of Shadows and Fallen Hearts—were published. These two novels are considered the last to bear the "V.C. Andrews" name and to be almost completely written by

I requested this before I found LOSING SPRING middling, but to my utter surprise, I enjoyed it more. Don't get me wrong. Everyone sucks. The anti-gay rhetoric is still alive and strong. But the drama drama-ed.

We return to the Sutherland mansion. Caroline's only friend in this hellhole is her cousin Simon. He's a little manipulative. Is it a little incest-y? Sure. Is it also a little murder-y? Again, sure. But these people kind of deserve it, and I'm not sorry.

It has been decided through private tutoring and aversion therapy that Caroline didn't "inherit" her mother's gayness. She is allowed to go live with her father and his new family in Hawaii. Parker, her new stepmother, insists on being called Parker, even by her bio children. It's weird, but not as weird as the stepsiblings, who need serious mental help.

I'm not into cheating arcs, but this is a V.C. Andrews ghostwritten thing, so cheating is the least of our issues, but I wanted Caroline to have a little something something with part-Hawaiian Noa, who I have decided looks a bit like my workplace crush, which I'm too old to have.

I was hesitant to pick this book up after reading the first book of the Sutherland series, Losing Spring which I didn't like very much, but did show some promise. I am happy to say that I thought this book was better and I found it interesting.

Description:
After the tragic death of her mother and a long period of isolation under the thumb of a cruel grandfather, young Caroline Brady has little to hope for in her life in the foreboding Southerland mansion. Her only companion, her enigmatic cousin, Simon, may be a wolf in sheep’s clothing and is not to be trusted. But when Caroline’s estranged father suddenly resurfaces with news of a new wife and stepchildren in Hawaii that she’ll finally be allowed to visit, Caroline dares to hope for a new, normal life. Desperate for her father’s love, Caroline will do anything to stay in this new home. But her troublesome stepsister has other plans, and Caroline cannot tell who to trust and who to run from. Will her new stepbrother and stepsister be a light in her dark life, or will they blot out the last slivers of sun forever?

My Thoughts:
The characters in this book are much more developed that in the first book of the series. I actually started to like Caroline and became more invested in how she navigated life after her mother's death, her father's remarriage, and her life at Sutherland with her grandfather and his family. I also developed some hope in the grandfather's humanity - although just a little. Caroline has had a very hard time and a lot to face for a young girl. Navigating her new family situation is difficult and she always has to be cautious. Her cousin, Simon, has some problems too, but I think Caroline is starting to like him. Caroline gets the chance to go live with her father and his new family in Hawaii and what happens there is interesting and kept my attention. Caroline may have found a friend in her Aunt Holly as well. I think I will read the next book in this series to see what happens to her.

Thanks to Gallery Books through Netgalley for an advance copy. Expected publication on February 13, 2024.

This was my first V.C. Andrews book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Simon is still a bit suspicious to me, but I'm truly intrigued by all that he gets into. I'm slowly warming up to Grandpa Sutherland. Aunt Holly was truly my favorite character. She seemed like she truly cared! The ending left me with a cliffhanger, so now I'm looking forward to the next book! Refreshing and quick read with mystery bits and twists that keep you on the edge of your seat!

Caroline Bryers mother dies and she goes to live with her mean grandfather Sutherland. The mansion is filled with evil lies and family secrets her cousin Simon reveals to her.
Her father has moved to Hawaii and is remarried with 2 stepchildren around her age. She gets a chance to live with them but things happen when she gets there.
This is the second book in the series and I can’t wait to read the next one. Thanks NetGalley and Gallery Books for this eARC that will be released February 13, 2024!

A significant step up from the first! All of the characters feel a lot more developed and fleshed out here. We get a much better glimpse into Caroline and we start to see real development from everyone.

If you were on the fence about the first one you should read this one. Losing Spring was a bit middle of the road for me, leaning towards positive, and this one is a definite positive!

I discovered an enthralling read, even though it's the second installment. Told as a stand-alone, it piqued my interest to delve into the first book very soon. Amidst the mysterious Southerland mansion, Caroline's quest for family unfolds with jaw dropping moments, keeping me captivated. The enigmatic character of Simon makes me untrusty of his motives. The brief visit we get in Hawaii was fun and I wish there was more. My heart just breaks for Caroline. The narrator, Caitlin Davies is nothing short of amazing. The audiobook's blend of mystery and family dynamics, enhanced by Davies' delivery, makes it a compelling listen. Patiently waiting to see what happens next at the Southerland mansion.

A very special thanks to Simon Audio for the ALC.

I have some many, memories of reading ALL of VC Andrews books when I was WAY too young. They were so captivating and telling the stories of powerful scary families, incest, the family lies and secrets and maybe a little murder. When I got this book, I was drawn right back in to that world of not sure who is on your side and who is against you; angsty teen tension . I don't even know why I love them, but this is the perfect family, and anything can happen, and I am there for the ride. There wasn't a huge plot twist, and it was almost anticlimactic in the actual story but the way you feel being in Caroline's head as she navigates a life at Sutherland and then in Hawaii with her stepfamily with al l It's dark secrets just keeps me so engrossed. and I can't even explain why except I am such a sucker to the family secrets story.
I was not a good reader and didn't' know this was the 2nd in a series until I finished the book, and I will say, I don't think that made a difference except I want to go back and read how she got to where she was in this book, and I am desperate for the story to continue. Now that we are back at Sutherland, and I am excited for more Simon. He is my guilty pleasure. He is so messed up and I want more of their interactions. I can't tell if he is evil, a lost little boy or just psycho but I want to read more.
I feel like Caroline is such a work in progress and has been through so many things. I started seeing some of her strength in that last parts of this book but then again maybe she will break. I think that is the thrill of reading a book like this. I will either see her explode into strong character she could be or break into a million pieces and I am here for the journey.
I would recommend if you like dark, family drama, character driven stories.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. This book was significantly better than the first book in the series. Caroline is much more developed as the main character of this book and I felt more vested in her while reading. The other family members are becoming more developed and I was interested in learning more about her Aunt by the time I finished. This book was much closer to what I expect from a V.C. Andrews book. The plot of this book kept me much more interested than the first book in the series did. This book was an easy read. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Chasing Endless Summer is the second book in V.C. Andrews new Sutherland series. The first was titled Losing Spring. In this book, it tells what it was like for Caroline living in her grandfathers mansion after the tragic death of her mother in a car accident. She goes through months of aversion therapy all while being cooped up inside her room which at one time belonged to her mother. Electric shock therapy was even done in hopes that she wouldn’t end up being gay like her mother. Her cousin Simon visits her and entices her to learn of some of the Sutherland secrets. I’m not so sure if he is really who she should be spending time with. I’m not too sure of his character and if he should be trusted. After her treatment is finished she is allowed to go to Hawaii to spend time with her father and his new family. But trouble ensues with her new step-sister and she soon is sent back to Sutherland, back to live under her grandfathers care. That is where the story ends in a cliffhanger where Simon is happy to have her back and invites her in to share some more of his family secrets! I love reading V.C. Andrews books, I think it's because they are all a little twisted and have a gothic feel to them. I’m really excited to read where the next installment of this series will go and see what will become of Caroline now. I’d like to thank Gallery Books for accepting my request and NetGalley for the arc. I really enjoyed reading this although I found it much too short. The waiting for the next book is sometimes excruciating but always worth it. I’m giving this a 5 star rating and will be recommending it to all my reading friends.

I had no clue that Chasing Endless Summer Chasing Endless Summer was the second book in a series.

Caroline had no personality just seemed like a shadow of a person who could have personality. It was typical V.C. Andrews style with the family have dark secrets, mental illness, and society frowned upon relationships. I know V.C. Andrews passed away many years ago but I am not sure if it is the same ghost(s) writer or not. The story also did not fit well, part here, part there, and another part over there it had a horrible flow. Not a series I will continue and if I feel a need for a guilty read I will be choosing to re-read some early work from V.C. Andrews.

Having been a fan of VC Andrew’s classic books as a teenager, I was excited to come across this book. Though I knew it was written by a proxy author under her name, I thought there would be at least a certain quality level of writing maintained. This book is one of the worst books I’ve ever read. The writing is repetitive and lacking depth. Nothing of substance happens, and the characters are not explained or developed enough to be cared about. There’s nothing logical or consistent in any of the characters’ behavior. It’s tragic that this worthless junk is being published under the name of someone who isn’t here to defend her reputation. VC’s memory deserves much better than this.

Caroline has lost her mother in a car accident. She finds herself under the control of a grandfather she has never met. He has her go under aversion therapy therapy to make sure she doesn’t become “gay.” Caroline is finally allowed to live in her mother’s bedroom in Sutherland. The mansion was a gloomy place to live. Caroline has only her cousin Simon to talk to. He does give her some information about life in Sutherland. It became apparent to her that Sutherland was not a home of love and kindness as it was when she lived with her mother. The housekeeper Mrs Lawson was the housekeeper of Sutherland and also watched Caroline with such an unfriendly attitude that made Caroline’s life scare to do anything. Mrs. Lawson catches Simon and Caroline in a “compromising position and smiles. She can’t wait to tell grandfather. Simon flips out and Mrs. Lawson has tumbled down the stairs and is dead. Caroline doesn’t know if Simon pushed her as she was getting dressed after her nap. The police are called and Caroline is questioned. She tells them Simon was the last one to see her. When police go to his room, he is in the throes of a seizure. What caused it? Eventually the police do get to talk to Simon and Mrs. Lawson’s incident was deemed as an accident. Caroline is told that she will be going to Hawaii to see her father and his new family. She might live with him if things work out between them. Will it or will Caroline get sent back to Sutherland?

The author has written a family chain of events that continues the story from the previous book written. The book is the second in the Sutherland series. Caroline is an innocent young girl who is on her way to becoming aware of a world she didn’t know existed. I liked Caroline and understood her confusing life she was living. Her father and his family was an unusual experience for Caroline. The characters were well written and surprising with their own beliefs. I look forward to the next book coming out as I want to see how Caroline’s life continues.

Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Thank you to @NetGalley and @Gallerybooks for my gifted copy!

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this sequel to ‘Losing Spring’ and am really hoping for a third ‘Sutherland family’ book to see how Caroline blooms and embraces her newfound life.

Caroline is first and foremost a Sutherland, even though she is Caroline Bryers (the blurb states Brady, which is incorrect). The Sutherlands are a very wealthy and influential family that has their hands in everything. They command respect and everyone’s unfailing actions to do what is expected and what they are told, especially Grandfather, the head of the family. Grandfather is never to be disobeyed or dire consequences are to be had. Simon, Caroline’s cousin, wants to be just like Grandfather. He lives and breathes his word, but is also a tiny bit rebellious. Caroline, unsure if she can trust Simon or not, lets him lead her until tragedy strikes the Sutherland house again.

Caroline tows the line with Grandfather, proving worthy to reunite with her Dad and his new family in Hawaii. She puts her all into pleasing her dad, in hopes of being able to live with him. However, her new step-sister, Dina may or may not have ill intentions for Caroline and talks her into doing things she normally wouldn’t do, to quell Dina’s unspoken threats of spilling her secrets and ruining her chances of a fresh start. Dina claims all she wants is a sister, but does she really? Who can Caroline trust and what will become of her?

Past and new readers of VC Andrews will love Caroline’s story and want to devour every book in this series. The author definitely does not disappoint in following the Legacy’s “Dawn and Flowers in the Attic” vibe.

Chasing Endless Summer.

This is the second installment of the Sutherland series. I have to say, it was significantly better than the first book. It can be read as a stand alone, but the backstory of how Caroline ended up with her grandfather Sutherland is outlined more in the first book.

What I liked:
-Carolines development. She's growing up. She wants a relationship with her father, acceptance from her family, someone she can confide in and relate to. Someone she can just be a teenage girl with and not have to worry about all the "what ifs" or insecurities that come with being a teenaged girl but more so being locked up and away from people.
-The underlining "who done it" with Simon and the family and why. Made Simon more misunderstood.
-Carolines relationship with Bean. He is older and trying to look out for her. Even though their relationship was brief, it was still a good thing for Caroline in the midst of all the negative.

What I didn't like:
-Dinas character. Not because she was poorly written, but because she was a mean girl.
-The lack of relationship with Caroline and her father. I was rooting for them to be more. But that isn't the Andrews way.
-The ending on a cliffhanger. I want to know what happens next. As this book was just released, I wont know for a while.

Overall, this book was good. I'll recommend it and I look forward to the next installment created.

This opinion is my own and completely unbiased.

Chasing Endless Summer by V.C. Andrews is a sequel in a series about the story of Caroline Bryer, a young teenager sent to stay with her wealthy Grandfather Sutherland in upstate New York after the tragic death of her mother. She is isolated from everyone and is forced to undergo months of aversion therapy because her mother and father divorced after her mother was caught in bed with a woman and her family didn't want her to end up like her mother. In order to be considered fit to go live with her estranged father and his new family in Hawaii, she endures this barbaric treatment. But when she gets to her father's, she learns she's not any better off there.

I struggled to get into the story at first because it seemed like the internal dialog and the description of the setting of the mansion were dragging. It picked up in the middle a bit more, but then it seemed to just drop abruptly at the end. Overall, the plot just seemed to be rushed and didn't have the same flow as other V.C. Andrews books. This story was okay, but it just wasn't my favorite.

**All new "V. C. Andrews" work published subsequent to 1988, while credited solely to Andrews, is the work of Andrew Neiderman, under license from the V. C. Andrews estate.**

Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery Books for the eARC for my honest review.

As a huge fan of The Dollanganger Series (Flowers in the Attic, Petals in the Wind, etc), I was STOKED to get approved for this book through NetGalley.

Andrew Neiderman, who has been a ghost writer for the V.C. Andrews estate following her death in 1986, seems to do well in capturing V.C. Andrews’ writing style and following with the theme/trope of unusual family trauma.

I love the development of the characters, though I wish the book were longer – if only to flesh out the characters a bit more. (But maybe, I also should’ve read the first book in the series first!)

With the tragic death of her mother and being isolated in her grandfather’s estate, Caroline finds companionship in her cousin, Simon. When her grandfather deems her worthy (along with her father’s approval), Caroline flies to Hawaii to live with her father, along with her stepmother and two step-siblings. This book is enamoring as you cling to hope for Caroline as she seeks approval and a normal life.

The only “downfall” with this book for me is the modernness of it. The cellphones, the mention of Instagram. It felt a bit out of place when I think of other V.C. Andrews books. (Not a bad thing, but it did take a moment to adjust.)

Overall, a very enjoyable read.

Thank you to NetGalley for the book!

Sutherland

Caroline's story continues as she finds herself under the care of her Grandfather Sutherland at his mansion by the same name. Because of her mother's actions prior to the divorce between her parents and the death of her mother she is seen as in need of reprogramming to be a true Sutherland.

After many weeks of being reprogrammed , locked in a dark bedroom she is finally accepted as one of the family. After this her father who has not contacted her since her mother died decides to let her come for a trial visit in Hawaii where he now lives with his new wife Parker and his stepdaughter Dina and Stepson Boston.

It appears to go well until a certain event with Dina and Caroline. Her father and grandfather decide she is not ready to join her father and Caroline is sent back to Sutherland where once again her friend is her cousin Simon and his mother Holly.

This is a good second book in the series with an ending suggesting the next book. I will be awaiting the next book in the series.

Thanks to the Author V.C. Andrews, The publisher Gallery Books, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review a complimentary copy of the book.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I am a lover of the original V.C. Andrew’s books and was looking forward to reading this story. While there are definitely dark undertones and an enticing plot, it was difficult to have empathy for many of the characters.

Caroline has already been through so much on her grandfather’s estate after loosing her mother in a terrible accident and her father leaving her prior to that due to divorce. Caroline has little to no one to guide her as she tries to maneuver her small world as an adolescent. What will happen when she is expected to reunite with her father and his new family. Will she be able to abide by her families expectations or will she fail?

This story depicts neglect of a child and how strict expectations from those who are meant to love you can do so much harm.

Thank you Simon and Schuster for the opportunity to read and review this book. I do plan to read the next book when it comes out to complete the story.

Entertaining, descriptive, well-written, and my goodness I am so very invested in the characters and family dynamics!

“Chasing Endless Summer” is the second book in the Sutherland Series with Caroline’s story picking right up where we left off in “Losing Spring”.

Even with being the second book in the series, “Chasing Endless Summer” easily works well as a stand alone novel.

From the start, I loved having the opportunity to follow Caroline’s as she continues to live in mayhem, while trying to find herself and her place and purpose in the world now that he mother has died.

I (impatiently) will wait for the next in this series!

Thank you to both NetGalley and Gallery Books for providing me the opportunity to review "Chasing Endless Summer” prior to publication. I am appreciative and leave my review voluntarily.

Book two Chasing Endless Summer is very much a must-read. It's full of dysfunctional family drama and keeps your interest as it moves along quickly. Caroline is finally reunited with her father in his new family home. She must adjust to having a Stepmother and step step-sister and brother. Will they welcome her or not? Her father is rigid and his new wife seems to be a carbon copy of him. Can Caroline follow the rules and stay or will any little infraction send her back to her Grandfathers control? The first book in this series was Losing Spring an excellent book you also need to read I would read it first so you know the what and why of this one. I am looking forward to book three as the way this ended I know there will be one. I do recommend this book. Thank you NetGalley and Gallery Books for this advanced eARC I enjoyed the book I think you will too. But get Losing Spring first.

The book was decent, I liked the concept of the plot, but the characters were pretty horrible. There was a lack of development for literally every character. A majority of the characters were way too similar, why is the whole world insanely strict and out to manipulate Caroline? It was almost comical how everyone was just the same thing different shape. Also, by the end of the book I feel like nothing changed for Caroline? She’s back at Sutherland and gained NOTHING from her experience in Hawaii. Additionally, I feel like her development was rushed, she so quickly snapped into some motivated, mature, and wise girl in the last four pages? I don’t know, definitely mixed feelings for this book since it did keep my interest, but I would have loved for there to be one good character that didn’t feel like a copy and paste of a different one.

I'm definitely past the target reading age for VC Andrews, I'm not a preteen anymore lol. However, this was a good book, second in a series, and I definitely suggest reading the first one before diving into this, as the backstory is really important to understand. Honestly, I like Holly the best of any character - like most VC Andrews books, this one deals with a teen who has been sheltered and kept locked away by family. The reason is absurd in this day and age, and she seemed much younger than the 14 she was supposed to be. Very much a formulaic book by the ghost writer of the deceased author, but good overall.

Caroline Brady is sent to live with her grandfather after her mothers passing . There she endures terrible abuse in the name of aversion therapy. Once her sessions are complete she’s sent to Hawaii where he dad and his new wife and step children live. Caroline is so eager to leave behind what happen in that awful mansion but find this new family isn’t much better.

I read this book without realizing it was a sequel, but the publisher was kind enough to email me the first book! I enjoyed this book by VC Andrews and even got a bit of Flowers in the Attic vibes! I’m curious if there will be a 3rd book, I feel the book ended abruptly!

Chasing Endless Summer is the second book in The Sutherland series. It continues Caroline’s story while she is living at her Grandparents house .
Caroline continues to discover the secrets of the Sutherland mansion with the help of her cousin, Simon. After some unfortunate events she end up going to Hawaii to live with her father and his new family. Caroline hopes to regain her relationship with her father but it is not meant to be.
This story is about family secrets and new beginnings. I actually feel like this book was better than the first in the series.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for a copy for my opinion.

The father and the stepmother ..... They make me lose faith in air traffic control. They are supposedly so intelligent and at the some time the most clueless people on the planet. Also Ghost Writer thanks for giving me the impression that Simon killed his baby sister out of jealousy. That's an image I really enjoyed. At lest the aunt is showing herself to be a human been.
The ghost writer continued to not know how the hell teenage girls work. Even lock up for the amount of time she was, she is written ages younger than she is. And it should be one book not two. Money grab that is badly written.

Caroline hasn’t had the best of life she lived with her mother and moms partner Until her mom passed away in a horrific crash and her partner Nettie is paralyzed and she’s forced to live with her crazy grandfather who does things to her no girl should ever have to deal with and then when her grandmom passed away her Grandpop Sutherland allows her to go back to Hawaii and live with her dads new family but what she gets there is a whole lot of trouble and her life goes into a downward spiral from there on !

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I keep reading the newer Andrew’s books hoping I’ll come across one as good at the originals. This one was ok but still did not compare to the early original series written by Andrew’s herself. Somehow nothing will ever top the Secrets in the Attic series nor the novel My Sweet Audrina. She has some amazing classics from the 80’s and early 90’s!
