Heart Gear, Vol. 3

Rate this book
Nearly 200 years after the destruction of humanity in World War III, Roue lives a happy life exploring the ruins of civilization with her “uncle,” a robot named Zett. But when their peaceful life is threatened, Roue must trust the mysterious robot Chrome to bring her family together again.

Hildr, a command-class military gear, has just won 50 back-to-back fights inside the warrior coliseum of Valhalla and now faces her 51st opponent—Chrome. As the two face off, Roue is forced to watch helplessly from the confines of a storage room on the lower levels. But while both Chrome’s and Roue’s attention is focused on the battle at hand, Valhalla’s ruler begins to hatch his own sinister scheme. Unbeknownst to her, Roue holds the fate of Valhalla in her hands, and danger is creeping ever closer!

My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC of this book to read and review.

Unpopular opinion time, but I HATED this one with the passion of a thousand fiery suns.

This went beyond "fan-service" and straight into lewd, pedo-perv territory. It did not pass go, it did not collect $200, it just WENT for it.

My first rearing back in disgust and epic eye-rolling was when the female warrior bot, who was completely covered in body armor from head to toe with only her eyes showing, realized she needed to get faster to have a chance at defeating the MC H, so she said something along the lines of "Armor Eject" and ALL of her coverings practically EXPLODED off of her, to reveal how much like a Scotsman in his kilt, or Brooke Shields and her Calvins, NOTHING got between this bot with Gravity-Defying Boobs (tm) and her armor. Sadly, as soon as she said her line, I knew what was coming and I was disappointed the mangaka went there. So obvious.

We even got treated to a shot of the MC H in the background through the foreground of her legs spread, with the apex 100% visible. Classy.

And we ALSO got the gratuitous "Boob Punch", where the MC H, missed the punch he was making and got her square in the boob. Of COURSE we get the panel of her gently clutching her GDB (tm) with her black gloved hand for a LOVELY color contrast.

Spare me.

That's not what made me decide to DNF and write a scathing review. I decided to roll my eyes and get over it and continued on.

The 11-12 year old female MC ends up getting captured. In-between chapters, we get one-page artwork that somewhat ties in to what is happening with the storyline.

The one after the pre-pubescent female was as follows and made me see red.

She is depicted, tied up in a suggestive pose with what appear to be electrical wires, rubber hoses and rope. She is dressed provocatively with a look of dazed helplessness on her face.

Excuse me, whut? Did the mangaka just OVERLY SEXUALIZE an 11-12 year old girl as if it was perfectly natural??

No. No no no no no NO NO!! That is NOT ok!! That will NEVER be ok!!

I don't care if the storyline is the best there ever was (spoiler, it isn't, not even close), if the artwork is so beautiful it makes you cry (it made me tear up, but not from beauty...) and if all of the proceeds go to saving cute, furry animals (somehow, I severely doubt it), I will NEVER read another page of it and highly recommend that you don't waste your time or money on this misogynistic, pedo-condoning steaming pile of garbage.

1, I wish I could give negative stars because this deserves about ten of them, stars.

Roue’s stomach gives away her secret! Wait, no it doesn’t. By which I mean, yes it does. As Chrome throws down against Hildr in Wodan’s colosseum, there are machinations (possibly literally) in the background that could see the colosseum’s true purpose finally fulfilled.

Lots and lots of action and solid plotting make this one a treat. While I say literally every time that shonen isn’t my genre, it is also true that I won’t say no when the subject matter gets enough right. This series does.

Part of it is the way the action is conveyed. This has some of the best realized fight scenes I’ve read in a long time and I love how easy it is to follow. These last two volumes have always had at least one “wow” moment to them and that’s more than many series get their whole run.

It doesn’t hurt that even amidst all the punching and slashing there is the great question of what sort of life a synthetic creature has or can hope to have. Free will is elusive and, as we see, is not guaranteed even for those robots that have it.

Which is to say, Wodan’s ultimate motivations are insane, but he knows they’re insane, yet cannot go against his primary purpose because it’s how he was built. How he achieves these goals requires some thought, but it all serves his dictated function.

Even then, Chrome and Hildr pummel the stuffing out of one another, not because they have no choice about it, but because they have no choice about it. If you can parse the delightfully philosophical difference between those choices you’ll have a good time with Heart Gear.

Roue turns out to be incredibly dangerous, through no fault of her own, and it was neat to see her have a purpose other than just kidnapping victim. Yes, victim with a purpose isn’t much better, but she also comes through when she’s needed.

Wodan’s plan is sound enough, cresting a wave of pseudo-science that’s no better or worse than what’s come before. Extra points for integrating the camera robot, Rock, into a pivotal role that makes him less annoying but still true to his introduction.

As we close out just before this arc’s big conclusion, everything lines up pretty well and it set up a fair amount earlier on to boot. A lot of times manga plotting can feel like real seat-of-your pants stuff, but not here.

If this comes close to perfection, it doesn’t quite achieve it due to the fact that this story still has some real kinks when it comes to its female characters. That chapter title page with Roue bound and trussed up in an exploitative pose is way more thirsty than a depiction of a girl that young should be.

And Hildr is a skilled and competent opponent, a woman of brains and skill. And massive breasts, naturally, which the story ridicuously even tries to justify as something other than overly horny design. Look, I get that airbags save lives, but that’s asking a bit much.

It just detracts from what is actually super strong work in every other respect. I mean, between the other robots we’ve seen, this design is par for course for the series and the genre. It’s just such an obvious crutch. I know it’s the genre, but I do wish for more.

4.5 stars - big sigh to the female designs, but huge thumbs up to everything else. This is some seriously strong action with a real brain behind it and it’s one of the strongest shonen I’ve read in a bit.

The hour works nice and I like how the characters are given purpose and this despite maybe not quite understanding what those purposes totally are though it was kind of eye rolling to see that the female Geair Chest was the size of my head it’s like do we really need to do that I just feel kind of unnecessarily sexual especially in an action scene it’s definitely interesting and I enjoy the plot and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more that was probably my only nitpick though

Reading the official English translation through an app called “MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA”.
I love that Roue managed to make a friend in such a tense and violent environment such as The Arena.

what a great volume - chrome vs hildr was a crazy fight and roue bonding with rock was damn adorable. when roue got captured and rock put on her little bunny ears.....AUGH MY HEART!! then the whole sequence after she's restrained/loaded into the alternate reality was very awesome, especially when rock hacks in and saves her. I can't wait for the next volume!!

I will say though, I'm knocking off a whole star because the egregious fan service/over-sexualization of hildr is so disrespectful....she is SUCH a cool character without it!! her armor is badass, her backstory is compelling, and the quieter scenes with chrome seemed to be going somewhere great. unfortunately, we get a whole bunch of unnecessary panels of her ginormous boobs, including an actual boob-punch scene that's just ridiculous, accompanied by multiple butt and crotch shots. this would have been a perfect read without that.

I really wanted to give this four stars because I am enthralled by the story and the slow unraveling of robots finding meaning and life for themselves. And I love seeing Chrome and Roue's friendship develop.

But god DAMN, what is up with the grotesque over-sexualization of the female robots in this series? I pushed through it with Mary in the first volume, but Hildr's 'armor purge' was just disconcerting. If you're going to make me read a sentence like 'even with this special shock-absorbing padding...' after an unnecessarily detailed tit punch, I'm going to lose interest in the story fast.

That fucking titty punch. First of all, ouch! Second, why? Third, of course the author found a way to make the robot with the giant tits make sense (shock absorption lmao).
There was another questionable piece of art of Rue, and I'm so close to dropping the rest of this series. The story is so good, why is it even included? There's plenty of fanservice without a kid being drawn in sus ways. Just stop it.

"Special Shock Absorption Padding" Yeah... that's totally what those were originally designed as. Anyway, Hildr is and Chrome are fighting so that Wodan will give them information about Heavenland. Meanwhile, Roue is hanging out with Rock.

Then Wodan figures out that Roue is human and uses her to rewrite some base codes. Safe to say, we'll end up with some new friends by the end of this.

This volume expands on the themes of War and one's Will. The Gears have to decide for themselves how to live their lives now that humanity has fallen. I love how this series discusses these themes.
Sadly, this volume ended in a cliffhanger and left me wanting more. Loving this series so far, highly recommended.

Thank you NetGalley and Viz Media for this arc!

5/5 stars!

This volume brings our two main characters into such peril! The way this ends on SUCH A CLIFFHANGER I really really can't wait for the next volume to see how everyone ends up :S

The art is really well done, even if some things are cringey or more than a little ick lol

I'm liking the series, although I'll caution that the fanservice felt even sillier this volume. I actually snorted through my nose at how ridiculous the internal logic of giving a robot giant breasts as defensive shock absorbers was. But they're robots so there's no romantic/sexual tension or leering, so I don't really care.

Disegni spettacolari e la storia sta diventando sempre più articolata e coinvolgente. Bellissimo il dialogo fra Wodan e Roue sui desideri e lo scopo per cui si combatte.
Un manga che fa riflettere.
Davvero consigliato.

4/24 These are getting too philosophical for me, and I didn't appreciate the "nude" gear. Gonna pass on any more.
