Thirteen Witches #3

The Palace of Dreams (3)

Rate this book
This “thoroughly satisfying…out-of-this-world” ( Kirkus Reviews ) third and final book in the Thirteen Witches trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Jodi Lynn Anderson follows Rosie in her last stand against the Nothing King—perfect for fans of Newbery winner The Girl Who Drank the Moon .

After barely escaping Earth with the League of Witch Hunters, Rosie and her friends are hiding out from the Nothing King and his witch followers on a barely inhabited planet. Then a messenger arrives with the unexpected news that Earth survived the Nothing King’s black hole, but only because he wants one last treasure before dragging everything into the Museum of Imagined Things. Rosie saw the museum once when she visited the Brightweaver in the clouds. It’s infinitely tall and made only of mist and figments, so Brightweaver was able to bundle it up and hide it for safekeeping.

The League of Witch Hunters, joined by a gaggle of the world’s last ghosts picked up from Limbo along the way, cross the galaxy in search of the museum and in preparation for their last showdown with the Nothing King. As Rosie and her allies weather surprises and betrayals while fighting to maintain their trust in each other, they may find the museum has one last secret in store.

Wow. Just wow.
I hate that this is the last book in this series because the author wrote this book so well! This being the final chapter of the Thirteen Witched trilogy, here are some pros and cons of The Palace of Dreams☺️
Pros:
-AWESOME description
-creates that one moment where the book becomes a Rom-com😍
-beautiful ending!!!!
Cons:
-Maybe too much description?? I mean, i don’t want to be stuck on a sentence wondering what this and that meant!
- makes the books in the series SO FAR APART so I can’t remember anything and I have to infer most of this stuff u put on paper 😩
Rosie+Ebb 😌

Have an awesome and purrfect day 😚

This is the 3d & final in the trilogy, & I loved this lust as much as the 1st 2. I can’t say a lot since this is the last book, but I just love the magic of this alternate world, all the details the author put into this, the Palace of Dreams, & more. I loved the knew characters we meet in here, the adventure, the danger, etc. Incredible writing. Never wanted to put down. Incredible characters.
1 love Germ lol & Ebb so much. There’s a certain bird in this that is phenomenal too. Not sure how I feel about the ending honestly, but the whole of the story I loved. BEAUTIFUL cover by Kirbi Fagan s well.💜

This was SO MUCH slower than the first two. And so much space stuff- it felt more sci-fi than fiction. I absolutely loved the first book, the second book was quite good and I just didn't love this one. It was slower, and had less of the "magic". (Though the library scenes help bring that back a little bit). I liked the ending, but man it took awhile to get there. Definitely my least favorite of the 3, which is sad because it started so well!

I really enjoyed how the relationships between characters progressed in this novel. How it continued to deal with growing up, growing apart, growing closer, and changes—not only external changes but also internal changes. How scary it can be to discover who you are as a teenager is different than who you were as a child. And how sometimes expectations do not meet reality and how to deal with the disappointment that can occur. It was interesting to see how the world handled have the sight back. I appreciated the commitment to giving people second chances and not judging with little information as a foundation. I really enjoyed, and I recommend, this series. Surprisingly, I believe the second book was my favorite. That's usually the weakest one in a trilogy.

Excerpts

Germ loves home—she's a star around which people orbit—but she left all that behind to come with me on a journey that gotten stranger and scarier each time we've gotten close to finishing it. I've always leaned on her for help being brave, and now I want her to be able to lean on me. But I don't even completely know who my new thirteen-year-old self is. All I know is that I trip on chairs and feel a pinch when Zia touches Ebb's arm.

----

Once when we thought we'd won, we'd actually lost. Once, something that meant everything—food, water, trees, land—was gone.

But also once there was a bird who could fly through anything. This bird did not need food, or water; it didn't need trees or a place to land. All t he things other birds might depend on, this bird could do without.

I don't know what the bird looked like; it couldn't quite be seen. But I do know it was tired, and beaten up by all of its battles, and weary from trying to reach the safety of the sky yet never quite arriving. This bird was trying to be something but it hadn't found out what.

And still, anytime it lost itself, it simply lifted its wings and moved. And because it moved, it lived. It found that it could survive even the emptiest of emptiness. It found that emptiness had something behind it, too.

----

If there's any chance for the world, it lies here," Rufus says. "The Nothing King wants to snuff out all that this basket holds—the maybesand the possibles. Those are worth everything, I think. Imagination is the opposite of witches, and the Nothing King knows it.

----

Back in my room, Germ has—in her miraculous way, given that she only pushed me into the lion's den of confessing my feelings a few minutes ago—fallen peacefully asleep. (Even when she's full of suspense, Germ borders on being a narcoleptic.)

----

Sometimes I forget that this is supposed to be my mom's job, to make decisions so that I don't have to. It's what I've wanted all my life, for her to take care of things instead of me. But now, I worry she's making the wrong choice.

----

Germ hands me her teddy bear.

I stare down at it, then up at her as she nods encouragingly. After a moment, to please Germ, I give it a hug. When I do, it begins to glow. And the glow wraps all around me, making me go warm and soft. And I feel, suddenly, okay.

"That's amazing," I say, feeling calmer already.

Germ takes the teddy bear back matter-of-factly. "Love is my superpower," she says casually, as if it were obvious. And I know she's right, and it always has been.

----

What's on the other side, once you do the hardest thing you can do, which is change? How much do I trust that there's light on the other side of an abyss? How much do I believe that could be true?

Top notch fantasy, all the more impressive since I haven’t read the first two of the trilogy and was still quickly invested in the world-building and characters. This book for the most part carries the shades of past fantasies deservedly and well, but I did think the catch 22 of genre expectations did, to a small extent, prevent this from being a 5* book for me in the end. I guess a big cosmic battle was inevitable, but is it even possible nowadays to make one truly exciting or surprising? I suppose it’s to the author’s credit it isn’t dragged out—the expected beats happen quickly and dutifully one after another—but then the catch 22 is that the climax of this fantasy trilogy didn’t feel as tense or weighty as one’d hope Similarly the closing character resolutions are expected and knocked out pretty quickly, which might be smart but still maybe lessens emotional payoffs. On the other hand, I want to come back to this being really top notch. So (spoiler?) any reader with half a brain knows Rosie will meet her dead dad in the end. It’s to the book’s credit that that meeting was still emotional and true.

I really liked Thirteen Witches, and ended up purchasing it, and it's been popular with my readers who like to think that they might someday be able to do magic.

The Sea of Always was okay, but all I really remember about it was that they were stuck in the Time Whale for a really, really long while.

This was a good conclusion to the series, and we do get closure with the mother and brother. It was a little more space related than I remember the others being. I'm still not sure how I feel about the end of the book. The covers are fabulous, and a three book series is perfect for a nice present for a reader who loves magic and saving the world from evil.

I liked how this tied everything together, largely in ways I hadn’t anticipated. I liked Rosie’s growth as a character and how she came to trust herself more and how that in turn made her a more valuable asset to both her personal quest and the team efforts. I also liked how everyone trusted her, even when she admitted that she couldn’t reveal her sources or explain what she was working on and doing. Everyone was willing to work as a real and true team, and the trust they offered each other was really cool to see.

The Palace of Dreams is the 3rd installment of the Thirteen Witches trilogy, a middle grade fantasy adventure about a young girl tasked with ridding the world of the last Thirteen Witches. In this specific installment we get to learn more about how memories and imagination are saved. We also learn more about time splices (within time) and found family. I had fun with this series and would recommend it to fans of Percy Jackson, Amulet, or Witch Haven

The amount of times I cried during this book is absolutely diabolical. This is one of my favorite series I’ve ever read and it warms my heart knowing that my younger self and kids would enjoy this. This was such a beautiful way to end the trilogy. Jodi, thank you for giving Rosie to the world. Her story, development, friendships, adventures, courage, and lessons have forever impacted me.

I started off this book with the hope it would be like the last two! It was a little fast paced and slightly all over the place but the end made me cry! It felt like it was a happy ending and I throughly enjoyed this reading!

A great way to end the series! I liked that it was able to touch on a little bit of the family dynamic that was concerning, although it couldn't spend as much time on nuance as I would have wished.
