Rate this book
The original, critically acclaimed trilogy of graphic novels of the cult-favorite anthropomorphic alien invasion collected together for the very first time!

A cozy English country village enjoying the peace of the 1930s is invaded by deadly alien machines, forcing a ragtag group of survivors into hiding in the no-longer-storybook woods. A war veteran with PTSD, an agoraphobic writer, the town outsider, the local newsman, and a sheltered young man are forced to face life and death, the mysteries of the universe, and perhaps most horrifying, the callous officials who use the chaos of war to advance their own ends, attempting to discover the chilling origins of the invasion and keep each other safe. Wind in the Willows meets War of the Worlds, written by multiple New York Times bestselling author and an award-winning comic book writer Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy) and illustrated by award-winning graphic novelist I.N.J. Culbard (Doctor Who) in the classic sci-fi tradition with an anthropomorphic twist, Wild’s End reveals powerful acts of humanity persevering in the face of war on a worldwide scale. For the first time, the original trilogy of the cult-favorite anthropomorphic alien invasion graphic novels are collected here!. Collects Wild’s First Light, Wild’s The Enemy Within, and Wild’s Journey’s End.

LOCAL STAR-GAZER REPORTS SHOOTING STARS
Noted local astronomer Sir Herbert Bewell (r'tired) has informed this periodical by letter that this summer will be a fine one for all amateur star-gazers, as it is likely to bring forth a rich and unexpected crop of shooting stars, sure to delight and surprise all.

"The shooting stars will be much in abundance," he writes, "for my observations have shown the manifestation of objects in the outer skies. These rocks, drawn to the planet's magnetic fields, are minerals, or spatial matter, and they form bright shootings stars as they fall and burn in our airy atmosphere. High ground, away from town lighting, is an ideal spot from which to observe the show, which will be most stimulating and educational."

I first spotted this in a lovely bookshop in Bath but at the time I couldn't justify the price. Luckily eBay came to the rescue and I picked up a near perfect copy for a bargain price.

The most simple way to describe it is an anthropomorphic The War of the Worlds, however that does it a injustice as the similarities quickly diverge following the 'shooting stars' which herald the 'alien invasion'. Although the aliens are very reminiscent of H.G. Wells's creations, the somehow feel more destructive and brutal than the originals.

The cast of characters are well rounded and depict the brutality of humanity (well animal kind) when up against it. There are shock deaths, twists and turns, and an ending that leaves you wanting so much more. A great effort and a fully deserved 5 stars.

In a sort of crossover between "Wind In The Willows" and "War Of The Worlds", this comic book series follows the perils and tribulations of a group of disparate characters who become friends over the course of their adventures. Anthropomorphic animals flee invading "lampposts" from space who use a heat weapon to burn villages and people. Can they survive? And is there a way to possibly fight back?

It's an entertaining mix of genres, but beware - the writers are kin to George R.R. Martin; if you get too attached to any character, just remember that this is war, and in war, anyone can die suddenly and senselessly...
