葬送のフリーレン [Sōsō no Frieren] #10

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Vol. 10

Rate this book
Elf mage Frieren and her courageous fellow adventurers have defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land. But Frieren will long outlive the rest of her former party. How will she come to understand what life means to the people around her?

Years before the end of the war against the Demon King, Macht, the most powerful of the Seven Sages of Destruction, made a deal with the lord of the fortress city of Weise in an attempt to understand human emotions. Although the deal was at first beneficial to both sides, Macht eventually transformed the entire city and all of its residents into gold. Now, the strange tale of Macht, the fate of Weise, and Denken’s own past will all lead Frieren and her companions to one of their most difficult confrontations yet.

When your hero is basically Superman, you have to become skilled at developing the supporting cast, using flashbacks, and coming up with reasons why your hero might be temporarily weakened or distracted. This volume is a pretty masterful showcase for doing all that just right.

The backstory of the villain, Macht of the Golden Land -- a demon able to turn anything into gold almost instantly -- is so well told I almost feel a little bad about the well-deserved beatdown that's coming for him.

This series continues to wow me. This volume examined some of Macht’s backstory and introduced a scary new greater demon, Solitar. Frieren, Fern, and Stark are in grave trouble. I can’t wait to see how they get out this one.

J’ai adoré ce tome 10 et je crois que, pour le moment, il est mon préféré de la saga. Il surpasse vraiment les autres et cet arc est incroyable 🤩 Vivement la suite !

One of the best manga I've read this year! This particular volume was so thought provoking and well done. The plot points and stakes were top notch. I did not see that twist coming at the end! Loved it!

And Mahato. He may rank up there with Vegeta and Zuko for epic villains that make you care. I know that's high praise. But its his quest to discover what guilt is, what malice it, the human emotions he doesn't understand that makes him so unique. No spoilers! I can't wait to find out if he is redeemable or not. I equal parts want him to remain as he is and for him to be redeemed, but just a tiny bit.

And then there's the whole thing about curses and how we fear what we don't understand but the power to break it is in the understanding. JUST SO GOOD.

Onward to volume 11...

I honestly wasn’t expecting denken to become this much of a character after the first class mage tests, but I thoroughly enjoyed him in the volume along with the transferring of memories from him to frieren. very interesting that he was trained in magic by a demon! and the very demon who turned his village to gold. ugh, well now that’s a cliffhanger and I need to order more volumes.

Vol. 10 has picked up in action. The demons in this are wildly evil and quite frightening. This ends one one of those terrible wonderful cliffhangers too (terrible: I want to know what happens now, not have to wait until the next book; wonderful: WHAT AN ENDING -I promise, if you love Frieren, you won't be disappointed).

The stakes are finally ratcheting up and I need the next volume, desperately.

More depth revealed regarding Macht, a new demon is introduced, and our beloved party members are in danger. The cliff hanger of this one has me antsy! Shit's about to hit the fan!!

Deep in Macht’s memories, Frieren is of minimal use out in the present day, but since Macht is sealed away that shouldn’t be a problem. Provided another demon with skill at human magic didn’t get involved at the same time, of course.

One day, I know the shoe will undoubtedly drop for this series, but today is not that day. Yes, it’s yet another volume blending the living of life with strong action and wonderful characterization that marks this series.

Macht’s memories seemed like this was going to be the dreaded flashback segment, one of the things I have little time for (even if it’s serving a story purpose in this instance), and it is, but it’s also better than something so utterly standard.

As always, the demons are fascinating creatures. Their indifference to humanity, while resembling it and speaking a similar language, never fails to make them seem like such fascinating adversaries (pretty sure I say so every review focusing on them).

Macht proclaims that he wants to understand humans, but his methods are so murderous and brutal that they merely illustrate how impossible it is for him to ever cross that gap. Demons getting closer to humanity isn’t terribly likely and they say a lot of things to get what they want anyway.

Of course, the reverse isn’t true, and humans are only too quick to cast aside their humanity when it suits them. The story of Glück, who brings Macht back to do his dirty work, knowing full well that he’s likely to eventually die himself as a result, is the perfect contrast to how quickly people will change in the worst ways.

That this story also brings in Denken, fleshing him out to be a more rounded character than I was expecting? Nice touch. Oh, but then Serie shows up as well? Quite possibly my least favourite character in the series?

Since this digression eventually makes me enjoy Serie’s character that much more, honestly, I should give it five stars on that alone. It emphasizes that Serie isn’t a bad person, but her way of acting is starkly different from how Frieren conducts herself, even though they’re both elves.

I suspect that partly this is down to the way the two of them interact with humans. Frieren has learned things from her time in the hero’s party - the last flashback at the end shows as much - but Serie is more about giving to humanity rather than taking anything back.

Once the action kicks off and the cursed magic begins spreading again, we get a very lovely set of action sequences and some appreciated acknowledgement that Frieren is not going to die in her own series. Instead, this is parlayed into a corker of a moment to end the volume on and makes the anticipation for next time higher than a traditional cliffhanger would manage.

The art’s fine - I like the general designs and choices this series makes and it’s not ugly by any stretch of the imagination. But, it’s the writing that soars well above traditional manga to look at clear themes and develops robust characters that impresses me time and again.

5 stars - see above; I was still impressed this time, just as I have been every other time and hope to be in the future.

Frieren is a great and interesting series, but it walks a fine line between its base concept (what happens after an adventure) and a shounen-esque series of battles among great powers (aka "who is the shootingest shooter?"). Frieren becones uninteresting in the latter, and this volume definitely trods along the line between the base concept and the huge battles. Luckily, it remains a step within the former by continuing the question of how non-humans (elves and demons) view humans - the classic "what does it mean to be human seen from the outside"). It is a slow conversation, but a good one.

The battle with Macht was interesting, as he is an unusual demon…I don’t say the same for Solitair, who seems similar on the surface but is actually pretty different. Macht wants to understand humans TL empathize, where as she just wants to study them.

I was a little confused that they kept referencing humans and them being used to fighting the unknown (the analogy was a good one, but applied to Frieren it makes no sense). They must know she’s an elf, not a human at all…

I’m also curious what memories were erased from Macht specifically so she couldn’t read them. A little disconcerting that Macht hadn’t even met her yet and a demon could foresee their encounter (TBH I think that’s stretching things, as clearly he is seeing many potential futures, and can’t actually know which will come to pass).
