Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Fun spin-off volume with 5 stories and a bonus story featuring Sanji's adventures written by the mangaka of Food Wars! If you don't enjoy the writing and art style of Food Wars, I'd hesitate to recommend this one. But it was such a fun read and highlights Sanji's character and motivations throughout different periods of One Piece's plot. It also omits the creepier parts of Sanji's obsession with women and leaves behind the good parts. Just a good time overall:)

Oh, I love this so much!

Though Sanji is a main character in One Piece, I do find that he doesn’t always get the same attention and development that others in the crew and beyond get. Largely, I believe, that’s because he is often cast as the “gag character”. But, from his rather distinctly tragic backstory, we know he must contain more than that.

These stories—beautifully and sharply illustrated by the Food Wars folk—do such a wonderful job of capturing Sanji’s character and imagining what his interior life may be like. I appreciate how these stories delve into different aspects of Sanji’s seeming worldview—his “clean plate” philosophy, his altruism in regards to food, his increasing wanderlust, and his inferiority complex (carried with him from childhood).

This collection does such a fine job of understanding Sanji. There’s clear care and consideration that has gone into crafting these stories. Sanji’s character is never reduced to a gag.

It’s really the least this poor boy deserves.

Anyway, I’m so happy to see all of these stories collected into one place~

Although I was somewhat disappointed that this wasn't a crossover between Food Wars and One Piece, I still quite enjoyed it. The various chapters take place during different arcs up through Wano, focusing on Sanji's cooking efforts and mini-adventures, such as helping a father prepare his daughter's wedding banquet or serving a difficult customer at Baratie before joining the Straw Hats. Regretfully, it does have a chapter during Sanji's time on the island of the Kamas, which is a joke that wasn't funny in 2017 and definitely isn't now. But Shun Saeki's art is lovely, there's a chapter with my personal favorite character (Vivi), and it captures the feel of One Piece well. You'll want to be up on the source material through Wano (including knowing Sanji's past), but if you're a Sanji fan, this is worth it.

(Or even, like me, if you're not.)

We all know that the Comics Code Authority & all its pearl-clutching nonsense stopped long long ago.
We also know that Japan is NOTORIOUS for the way it laughs off pervertedness.
So a spinoff manga with the regular artist replaced with someone who famously makes pretty darn sexual content as part of the gag should REALLY not be that shocking to me...and yet it is!

It is an absolutely FANTASTIC amount of short stories for times in Sanji's life that were never covered in the canon manga but given a much richer amount of interactions, innovative dishes, and fuller demonstrations of this silly goofball's love of cooking. Unfortunately each tale is busted out of its splendor by the same quirk that makes "Food Wars" such a chore: VIOLENTLY ORGASMIC REACTIONS TO THE TASTING!

So comes the quandary of whether or not I can even suggest this to "One Piece" fans since a lot of this off-panel character development for the Straw Hat crew's cook is great stuff...but I can never in any good conscience recommend it to them unless I know they're also cool with the spicy stuff.

As a Sanji freak the art was a delicious meal. There is still that part of manga that the artists oversexualize the female characters and it makes me uncomfortable still. Also, not having watched the Momoiro Island arc yet, I would say theres some blatant transphobia/ unnecessary hate against people in drag or those that present differently. I'm sure it's a culture thing but it still leaves a weird taste in my mouth.

Well that was certainly one horny manga. The artwork contains literal pinups to the Straw Hat cook it feels like. That said the weird orgasm-esque drawings of people eating Sanji's food is slightly uncomfortable. However, overlooking the usual manga oversexualisation of women, this is a fun read especially if Sanji is your favourite character (or in the top two for me). The snapshot style of the chapters are all heartfelt and thankfully do not linger on Sanji's weird romantic ideals. My one complain is not enough Zoro, I like watching the wings of the future pirate king butting heads.

This really feels like it was made by fans for fans. There are small details that made me so happy that clearly show the love of the creators for One Piece.

I'm really hoping this gets animated some day!

This was such a great and fun read! I enjoyed Sanji’s characterization so much, as he felt completely like his former self and his manga counterpart. Additionally, the story taking place within differing time periods of his life was an amazing touch, because the reader could truly see how much he has grown—yet retained his core values of kindness, service, and of course, being a hopeless romantic. If you are a One Piece fan, and especially a Sanji fan, this is totally worth your time!

A nice collection of non-cannon one off stories based around Sanji. There are quite a few laughs to be found in this volume as well as a guest art style that suits Sanji quite well. The second and the last chapter were my particular favorite parts.

When a famous gourmand, known as “the tongue that spans the seas”, arrives at the Baratie, she is instantly disdainful of all that she sees and questions how good the food can possibly be. She makes ridiculous assumptions concerning the head chef as well as Sanji and the others. Sanji offers to make a dish for her, but under one condition – if she is pleased by what he cooks, she must clean her plate. Game on!

The crew of the Go Merry run across a castaway adrift on the ocean and bring him aboard, although he is less than thrilled and feels they should have left him. Finding a wedding invitation, Sanji surmises that the man is a chef from a nearby island whose only daughter is getting married and he has gone in search of some special seafood he could make for the occasion, but after catching the Draconic Super-fillet salmon, he got caught in a squall. However the weather is the least of his concerns – once he has the beautiful fish, he is unable to properly filet it! Sanji offers to help, but will this task prove to be beyond even his amazing culinary skills?

In the kingdom of Alabasta, a feast is being held to honor the heroes who saved the kingdom! But with Luffy’s enormous appetite and the chef’s staff being temporarily short-handed, a problem is about to arise. Sanji wants to help, but he doesn’t want to intrude. So he introduces himself and says he wants to see how such a large kitchen works, and he is willing to do anything, such as peel potatoes. They quickly take advantage of his generosity!

Sanji finds himself a hostage of the inhabitants of Kamabakka Queendom – an island comprised of drag queens! They challenge him to earn the rights to the 99 recipes of attack cuisine. But this will be no easy task. Challenge accepted!

Sanji – who now goes by Sangoro – is looking for a powerful samurai to join his crew, so decides to use his culinary skills to attract candidates. But as he and Usopp brainstorm, he discovers a soba noodle vendor who seems to have the market cornered. Sanji is never one to resist a challenge, so he challenges them, but soon learns they do have a monopoly on the best buckwheat flour. Can Sanji work around such a problem?

This volume takes the character of Sanji from Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece and features him in his own set of stories taken from various points in the original manga. It’s not hard to see that these stories were done by the creators of Food Wars, as the style is unmistakable. I love Sanji, so buying this was inevitable. They did a wonderful job with five interesting stories featuring Sanji, as well as a bonus story. If you love One Piece, particularly Sanji, as well as Food Wars, this book is for you.

Haha, I thought April Fool's Day was in April?

Admittedly, I don't know that much about One Piece. I know OF One Piece, and I'm vaguely aware of some of the characters, even if I couldn't pick out which ones were which in a line-up—except Luffy and Chopper, since... main character and dog thingoh I guess he's a deer (which makes it even funnier? that those are the two characters whose faces the artist went out of the way NOT to draw). I read NONE of the manga and watched only the first episode of the anime and, like with Naruto, figured out probably why people like it but wasn't that interested in continuing in the *1,000+ EPISODE*/*100+ VOLUME* series.

So I at most am sort of aware of who Sanji is from YouTube, though I have a slightly better idea after reading this book. It has a lot of trademark Shokugeki no Soma characteristics (the and the blatant cover ripoffHOMAGE, for instance). It... probably has a lot of One Piece characteristics, but I don't know what they are to tell you.

I think it helps? to know the characters, but it's still readable without knowing the complete history of every single person (there's a backstory for Sanji at the end anyway). A fun read, probably more fun for One Piece fans.

(The island of crossdressers is a bit... unnerving, though. I'd like for genderqueer folk to not be punchlines nearly this often, but... Japan. Sigh.)

REVIEW

I adored this book since Sanji's my favorite One Piece character 💞 I was so hyped that there was a spinoff novel all about him, but had to wait a bit to read it as it contains several short stories across all the Arcs. I'm currently watching the Wano Arc, so I thought it was finally time to read this novel, as there was no danger of getting spoiled anymore! Shokugeki no Sanji was illustrated by the creator of Food Wars, Shun Saeki, and in my opinion, he did a fantastic job depicting Sanji. The writers also managed to capture Sanji's personality perfectly, as a lot of people misunderstand his character. They showed Sanji's bratty, brash personality but also how much he cares for others and how his kindness is hidden behind grouchiness for men and infatuation for women.

I already loved Sanji, but this book made him even more attractive! The art style was fantastic and went out of its way to make Sanji look desirable and charming. I also loved how his passion for cooking came through in each story; the depictions of food were absolutely mouthwatering. Sanji's outstanding talent for cooking showed from an early age when he was still working at the Baratie as a kid. I loved how everyone who tasted his cooking looked like it was an orgasmic experience, that's how good the food was 😂 Sanji loves to feed everyone who's hungry and has such a good feel for people's emotions. I appreciated that the contributors understood the core of his character, which often gets ignored by people in favor of just focusing on the pervert gag.

The story also had so many homoerotic undertones. From Zoro allowing Sanji to use one of his swords to slice a difficult fish to the Okamas dreamily thinking Sanji was the perfect man, I was living for it! The best character was the mob guy from Wano who was crushing on Sanji and looking at his wanted poster every night 😂 He got the new one and literally admired it with heart eyes, I'm not making this up!

Food is War

Just as a warning some more sensitive readers might be offended by depictions of near nudity, tight outfits, and typical orgasm scenes when amazing food is experienced. In addition to this part of the book involves a time when Sanji was, I believe, in the Kamabakka Kingdom where crossdressing is common so if you are easily offended by these things you might want to avoid this one shot.

From the creator of Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma21486133 comes an homage to Sanji from One Piece. Honestly having never seen the anime or read the manga I didn't even make the connection until the very first scene showing a food orgasm which even without seeing the show I am well aware of where such a scene comes from. Now on the other hand I have been watching One Piece and have even read some of the manga so I know Sanji very well which is why I got the book in the first place and found this to be a great read for fans that could be enjoyable even to those unwilling to dedicate time to watching the series or read the manga.

Among the stories in this book we see Sanji versus a food critic from hell, Sanji's legendary fish cutting trials, Sanji helps out in the kitchen after their victory over Crocodile, cross dressing chaos as Sanji avoids attempts to avoid the island populace while preparing to acquire a special recipe, Sanji and the crew are looking for samurais to help so Sanji wants to make a food stall to scope people out and discovers a crooked merchant he needs to teach a lesson to, and in the end we see a story about how Sanji's natural talent got him a reputation and the sous chef position.

Multiple spin-offs in notable locations and events through the one piece epic that feature Sanji as prominently as possible.

It’s abundantly clear that the minds behind this, Tsukuda and Saeki, have fine tuned how to write about chefs and food in a way that’s visceral even for the people who aren’t as adventurous with their meals. Sanji, while getting plenty of love from Oda normally, doesn’t always use the most verbose language or actions you’d see with a chef as prolific and dedicated as sanji is meant to be. This definitely fixes that. The scene where he’s comparing knives and their purposes really brought that home.

Sanji has mentioned his knives being well taken care of and special before in the OG OP series but this took it deeper and that was very nice to see.

The only negative that prevented this from 5/5 top marks is that as with Tsukuda’s main work, Food wars, there’s so many full art panels of people (at least it’s not only women) blasting their clothes off in an orgasmic blow out of flavour. The horny is too strong and that’s saying something considering this is about sanji. Part of that comes from the highly detailed and well drawn illustrations which is a strength up until it causes these panels to come across as extra uncomfortable.

Ignoring the unfortunate horny parts though this is such a loving and good depiction of Sanji, which is just what being a Sanji fan is like in the modern age so…pick it up and read it.

This story is really interesting since it does not tell one story, but instead takes place throughout the Straw Hats travels. The story begins before Luffy and the Straw Hats arrival, heading towards the Grand Line, then the end of Arabasta right before the Straw Hats leave to sea, After Luffy arrived within Wano and was arrested and finally back when Sanji was young and being trained.

The Parts I like:
The art is really good and looks fantastic. I do prefer the art from the Manga but Shun Saeki has done a really good job. There is also a lot of heart within these stories. The moments in the Baratie are really nice, I really like the last part of the volume where we see Sanji when he is young. I also really like how after listening to Ruibei tale about his daughter which then encourages Zoro to lend Sanji his blade to cook the Dragon Salmon.

The Parts I don't:
I do think I would enjoy this if I read it as the different parts of the story take place. Reading it all the way leads to me wishing for a little bit more. I wish there was a little bit of combat and I don't really like Food Wars that much.

This is an incredible collection of six illustrated stories compiled into one shot spin-off manga written by a brilliant Food War: Shogukeki no Soma’s writer Yuto Tsukuda and a gifted illustrator, Shun Saeki.

In general, I enjoyed reading the entire six short stories and I found myself learned something new about gourmet cooking as well (I’m not a cook per se, I just have a fiery passion in eating good food) and I'd say, this manga had turned me into one of Sanji's fans!

My favorite chapter? Chapter 3? No. Chapter 6... No. Because I liked ALL OF THEM!

I also loved all the details on every page in this manga and Sanji looked so extremely good in Shun Saeki's style.

I would like to recommend this manga not only for Sanji's fans or One Piece enjoyers, but also for those who are looking for fun, adventurous, exploratory one-shot cooking manga.
