Here is wit and wisdom in the form of proverbs from all over the world, dramatized and complemented with humorous cartoons. The sayings are arranged by subjects that include Envy, Experience, Gratitude, Justice, Luck, Wealth, and ten others.
Axel was born in Hamburg, Germany. At school he was good at art, but didn’t think of a career in illustration until he won a cuddly purple cow in a drawing competition.
He moved to England in 1982 to learn English and study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art and then set up home in London. Axel illustrated a number of books for various publishers, and in 1993 Kate suggested him as the illustrator for Julia Donaldson’s first picture book text, A Squash and a Squeeze. This was the start of a hugely successful partnership: their bestselling modern classic, The Gruffalo, has sold over three-and-a-half million copies worldwide, and the TV animation was broadcast on Christmas day 2009.
Axel has illustrated a number of other highly successful books, including Muddle Farm, and his books have been translated into 42 languages.
Axel lives in London with his partner and young daughter.
This was one of those treasure finds in a bookstore that specializes in older pre-loved books. I loved the concept of being able to take various proverbs from many cultural backgrounds then putting them in a single and easy-to-carry book that you can read with you anywhere you may go.
There was such a wide selection of cultures but as mentioned in the Introduction several of the proverbs were the same although given a cultural exchange instead. It was interesting to see how people believed these words of wisdom from the events of their life, which is no longer memorized. There were a few that just didn't make any sense even when you read them a few times and so I may have to try to look into those ones more.
The other thing I enjoyed about the book were the illustrations. They were brightly colored and cartoonish but at the same time enough away from actually being a cartoon or comic. Furthermore the illustrator did a wonderful job in combing several different proverbs together for the illustration such as the woman milking the cow in the next field while her neighbor watches jealously from the other side.
All in all for those who enjoy proverbs or even just those who like reading similar type books I would recommend this book. It is cute, wise and will surely give you a giggle or two as you read.
Such a lovely book! The pictures are fabulous and go right along with the text. The Proverbs are so much fun… Most of them I had never heard before! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think that both adults and children will love it.
Some favorite proverbs:
“The fox that waited for the chickens to fall from their perching place went hungry.”
“The cow from afar gives plenty of milk.”
“A hasty man drinks tea with his fork.”
“He that has a big nose thinks everyone speaks of it.”
