Ollie is the story about a dragon who started life in 2007 and who was brought up in an English home in Enfield. Not quite the place you would expect to find a dragon, but he landed on my doorstep in a rather bedraggled state on a very bleak day. We formed a bond, which is still strong. He has had many adventures of which these are just a few. I hope you get as much pleasure from reading about Ollie as I have had in writing about him.
Ollie is a gentle, heartwarming story that captures the magic of finding wonder in the most unexpected places. The idea of a small dragon arriving on an ordinary English doorstep immediately invites curiosity, but what truly makes the book special is its sense of kindness, care, and quiet imagination. Diane Smiley writes with a warmth that feels personal, as though the story is being shared directly with the reader. Ollie’s journey from a bedraggled arrival to a loved presence in a family home reflects themes of belonging, compassion, and acceptance that resonate beautifully with young readers and the adults who read with them. The simplicity of the story is its strength. Rather than overwhelming with spectacle, Ollie focuses on emotional connection, making it ideal for bedtime reading and early readers who enjoy gentle fantasy grounded in everyday life. This is a charming introduction to dragons for children, reminding us that magic does not always roar or breathe fire. Sometimes, it knocks softly at the door on a bleak day and waits to be welcomed.
