Jenny may have moved from Mexico to the United States as a child, but her recipes are passed down through generations. She fondly recalls the smell of her mother’s birria (Mexican beef stew) all through the house, and it’s no surprise that birria is the recipe that first helped Jenny go viral on TikTok, achieving over a million views in the first day alone. Now fans can’t get enough of Jenny’s recipes, all presented in the warm and inviting manner for which she’s best known. Jenny considers a well-fed family to be the key to a happy family. As she says, every dinner should be celebrated, and food brings people together.
My Mexican Mesa, Y Listo! features 100 recipes ranging from breakfast and appetizers to tacos, tamales, and taquitos. The main dishes include mole negro, carnitas, chiles rellenos, and enchiladas. Jenny also covers kitchen basics for making tortillas and salsas from scratch—recipes that are sure to become staples in the home of anyone who enjoys the book. And let’s not forget her tasty desserts like churros, paletas, and Mexican bread pudding, and a few cocktails too. Sure to delight her avid fans and Mexican food lovers everywhere, this cookbook is a must-have for home cooks looking for their next delicious meal.
A serviceable Mexican cookbook from a social media star. Recipes are well-written and there are well-styled full-page color photos accompanying most of them. Recipes are fairly routine and what you might expect to find in a Mexican cookbook. Less experienced cooks and fans of the author will likely appreciate this offering more than cooks looking for new ideas or non-fans.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
My Mexican Mesa, Y Listo! Is a mexican cookbook. The sections are Breakfast and lunch, Appetizers, Tacos, taquitos, and tamales, Chicken, fish, and vegetarian, Pork and beef, Stews and soups, Rice and beans, Tortillas, salsas, and more, Desserts, and Drinks.
The recipes look phenomenal. The inside was all black and white (at least in the ebook version) which took away from the fun vibe of the cookbook.
I really enjoyed the personal touches she added to the cookbook and I can’t wait to make some of the recipes.
There are so many delicious recipes to choose from here! My daughter and I are fanatical about Mexican food, so I was super excited to get an advance reading copy of this cookbook. My mouth was constantly watering as I read each page. The author, Jenny Martinez, went viral on TikTok with her birria recipe, and you can also find more of her recipes on that platform. I plan on trying out her recipes for posole, salsa, beans and rice…I’ve had a lot, and I know good recipes when I see them. I also loved her anecdotes and stories about which relative made which recipe, and who loves what. Martinez’s sense of humor cracks me up, too: “I suck at [omelets]!” I do, too, Jenny—solidarity!
5 out of 5 stars!
My thanks to NetGalley and Simon Element for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
The Recipes Look Amazing! I wish I could say I tried all of the recipes! The ones I did try were yummmm!! Easy to follow recipes! Many will become family favorites. This would make a great gift and many great family gatherings. I look forward to purchasing a few as gifts.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley on behalf of the Publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.
I’m being generous with three stars. In this day and age of “influencers”, there’s no excuse for recipes without photos. A lot of these recipes do not have photos. The author isn’t offering any new techniques or unique recipes. I’d skip the book and get the recipes for free from social media. Or, use cookbooks by Rick Bayless, Diana Kennedy, Susan Feniger or a host of other talented chefs.
This is a fun book full of great stories and food. The amount of chilis used can be alarming, but the end result is really flavorful. There is a nice variety in the book and the photos are wonderful black and whites. She runs the gamut from traditional to new, mexican queso to poblano pasta.
