Title: Broken Date
Author: RL Stine
Genre: YA, horror
Overall Rating: 3.7 stars

This book would've done so much better if it wasn't for the cover inaccuracies.

Jamie is black haired, and she thought he stole earrings, not a ring...

But other than that, I think this may be one of the best RL Stine books I've ever read. I think his YA stuff that deals with the real, rather than the supernatural, tend to be better as they're more relatable. Ann-Marie was such a typical best friend with her sarcasm and wit, and other than Tom being, you know, possibly a killer, he was a great character too.

I really did like this book, great reads leading up to Halloween!

This book angered me almost from the outset. We immediately get our point of tension that we'll be dealing with throughout the book and straight away I knew we were going to get a ridiculous reveal. We then spend the rest of the book plodding through silly filler and miscommunication until we get to low and behold the womp womp absolute dud of a reveal. I will say however after that point, the last ten percent of this book when we're with our villains of the piece is very fun and wacky, they're two deranged, off the wall characters and It's a shame we didn't get to spend a larger portion of the story with them.

"She stood on the steps, shivering, waiting, listening. There was no reply. Then from the balcony she heard the unmistakable sound of laughter, laughter soft but menacing."

R.L. Stine was my childhood and I love going back to relive those memories. This was one I didn’t remember reading until I got closer to the end.

It was awesome and I love this one. The story was great, it kept me on edge, and Ann-Marie was the perfect and witty best friend.

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

Oh, this book... not one of R.L. Stine’s best, I’m afraid.

head shake

This is gonna be hard review to do because pretty much everything I have to say is spoiler-y, so here we go. Lol.

Basically, Jamie is at the mall one day with her best friend, when she witnesses a robbery and murder. She freaks out because she thinks the guy might have been her boyfriend Tom. But this idiot wasn’t wearing her glasses, but she’s pretty sure it was him.

Tom was being a little shady—he was definitely hiding something from Jamie. Was it the murder?

And then the climax was pretty underwhelming...

So yeah, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this book. The main character Jamie was just so dumb it was frustrating! Everything was just so obvious to me from the start! I’ll tell you one thing I did like though: Jamie’s friend Ann-Marie. She was really funny and such a savage! But overall, this book? Not my thing. I swear, R.L. Stine was so many other books that are better than this! I promise! Lol.

Ahahaha, okay.

First off, a quick note about the cover. Jamie is meant to have black hair, so why does the cover model have blonde? And what's the deal with the class ring? Am I missing something? And, on a note about her hair, Jamie mentions not being allowed to cut her hair short because her boyfriend, Tom, doesn't want her to. Control issues much?

Anyway, it's RL Stine, and I shouldn't be looking to deep into it, but haha wow, now I know why I never really liked his books.

The ending is also completely unsatisfactory. What happened to Okie and Dolly? Did Jamie and Tom ever go to the police? How could they be laughing about it afterwards? What happened to Ann-Marie? Why was Jamie hallucinating?

Oh geez, I shouldn't be looking so deep into this.

If you're looking for a short quick fun mystery book by R.L. Stine then this would be a great book for that. It doesn't break any new ground but it gets the job done. At only 150 pages, it'll be a quick read. What I like about this book is that it starts off right away with its story within the first two chapters. After that it delivers a lot of fake outs, which I enjoyed 'cause it was entertaining and kept the story going without figuring out the real killer and answers before the end of the book.

Babes, get your eyes checked and wear your glasses. Your boyfriend might quit swim team and stand you up while you mistaken a murderer/robber for him at the jewelry store.

We get a fakeout death and a veryyy unreliable narrator in this one. Very wacky.

Also lol, Okie Farnum? The killer’s name is Okie. Farnum.

After I read Bury Me Deep, I decided to try out another horror themed author. R.L Stine's books are a bit more intense, but I loved this book. It's not like other horror books or films where the person is controlled by a ghost or anything like that. I liked it because it's a more realistic plot, and this could happen to someone but there is a thin chance of it happening. R.L Stine put in a good amount of mystery and horror. My favorite character was Jamie's friend, she was always playing around and cracking jokes. Even when Jamie is sad or worried she still jokes around, she is just like my friend Daniela.

This book was really good and was a great first R.L Stine teen book! When I was younger I read goosebumps series and I loved it so I decided to try R.L Stine. Many people said the books were like Christopher Pike, but his seem more reality (R.L Stine) while Christopher Pike seems more like it isn't or can't be relatable. I recommend this for teens who like Christopher Pike and the Goosebumps series.

Decided to pick up R.L Stine’s Broken Date for a change of pace in my habitual reading itinerary…. R.L Stine’s Goosebumps (both the show & the books) were a huge part of my childhood, & this book was rotting in my book shelf so I was like ‘it’s your time to shine, babes’. I couldn’t leave her to rot any more…

This review contains spoilers but like duh… read ahead carefully.

Though I don’t regret picking this one up, it certainly is more cliché than I would’ve hoped for. I had high hopes for this book but unfortunately the character development & the critical thinking skills of our main cast are severely lacking.

Our protagonist Jamie is definitely something special. She’s our main girl, who is blind without her glasses & actually insane. In the beginning of the book we learn that Tom no-shows her for date night for the first time ever. No call, no letter, no nothing. So to deal with this, Ann-Marie takes Jamie to the mall to scope out some ugly pink Reeboks, as girls do.

During this time, the two girls go on their separate paths & Jamie wanders into a jewelry store where she sees someone who RESSEMBLES her boyfriend Tom, literally shoot the jeweller.

Like any sane person with common sense, Jamie doesn’t stick around to find out what’s coming her way and flees the mall. She ends up revealing what she saw to Ann-Marie but swears her to secrecy.

I mean.. this couldn’t really be Tom right?🥹 Ugh… give it up! <- that’s how I feel anyways. But like really, you cannot see without your glasses and you weren’t wearing them at the mall so why are you jumping to conclusions?

R.L Stine’s way of writing women is kinda like a funny whiplash to me. I love both Jamie and Ann-Marie because they are both teenage dummies… but I feel like this speaks on the bimbofication of women. They are so terribly one dimensional but their funny banter is their saving grace. These girls have no common sense, it’s actually hilarious.

For instance, Ann-Marie is the definition of girl’s girl… in the craziest way. When Jamie tells Ann-Marie about watching her boyfriend literally kill someone, she just says to talk to him about it. It isn’t until chapter 9 where she’s like, “maybe go to the police?”. Like listen, I get that they’re teenage girls and Jamie ‘loves him’ but I don’t give two cents. IF I WATCHED MY TEENAGE BF SHOOT SOMEONE I WOULD TURN HIM IN! I literally don’t care if I love him. Common sense, I fear.

Also, what I don’t get is how Jamie is constantly being stalked & followed, but she still refuses to go to the police until she talks to Tom (who’s literally been absent for most of the story). People around Jamie are concerned about her but aren’t suspicious of this out-of-control behaviour, which is uncharacteristic of her (so like I’d be concerned but what do I know). After the incident in the jewelry shop, Jamie has been suffering from intense night terrors, anxiety attacks, & has been dealing with a stalker who looks exactly like her BF. If this doesn’t scream, ‘call the police’, I don’t know what will.

Chapter 14 is when the girls finally gain some sense. Ann-Marie is taking Jamie to the police station after school to finally come clean. IF ONLY IF WAS THAT SIMPLE!

Yet again, we have another cliche kidnapping trope, where our lead heroine gets abducted by the Tom Doppelganger ™, in front of her best friend & her actual boyfriend. WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED ENTIRELY IF SHE WORE HER GLASSES! Reason being she runs towards her stalker mistaking him for Tom yet again! I don’t know, if I was getting followed I would maybe wear my glasses when I leave the house so I can see who is stalking me? Another rash & illogical decision on Jamie’s behalf.

This is when we learn that Okie Farnum, a 17 year old sentenced to life in prison was behind the jewelry store killing. This part peeves me even more because Okie dyed his hair white to disguise himself. Any woman would be able to tell bleached hair apart from natural blonde. This is insane logic. Like how could she not tell? Especially when her boyfriend has this natural white piece in his hair?

Also can we talk about the insane plot twist that is Tom jumping off Okie’s car and beating him up? That car was going over 55 miles per hour. Which is 88km per hour, by the way. Statistically, holding onto a car at this speed is damn near impossible. But kudos to Tom for having these undisclosed super powers of his.

Another shout out is in order for Okie’s girlfriend, Dolly, with zero book time. She’s very loud & protective of Okie, definitely would be the type of lady to cause a fuss over someone getting his take out order wrong.

Anyways, Okie & Dolly end up getting both Jamie & Tom. To murder them, Okie plans to drown them, but he doesn’t know that Tom was on the swim team and can apparently hold his breath FOR THREE WHOLE MINUTES + as he’s being drowned, seems like a very nice feat to have in this crazy circumstance. When their backs are turned & they go to drown Jamie, Tom literally emerges out of the water unaffected and the two teens take them down.

Needless to say, if you love miscommunication tropes (which I certainly don’t), this book is for you. It was a relatively quick read that made me shake my head and laugh for the most part. For a horror book, this was extremely mediocre and didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat at all. Regrettably, this book only merits three stars from me.

OK so this one was not as terrible as most of the Fear Street books that I have revisited and the peripheral characters were all engaging. The protagonist is an egocentric pain in the ass though. She isn't likeable or relatable and is so untrustworthy. She is apparently blind as a bat and as smart as a ding bat.

So this was originally written in 1988 by Stine and I think it was part of this Crosswinds series which was like a teen romance? My edition is a 1991 printing to capitalize on his Fear Street notoriety.

It's not bad. It's a pretty good story.

Jamie and Tom are those high school sweethearts who have been together since junior high. Going to go to the same college and marry that sort of deal.

Tom is late to a date with Jamie. He's never late so she gets mad.

Calls her best friend Ann-Marie and they hit the mall to cheer Jamie up before the dance tonight. AM buys shoes and Jamie wanders off to a jewelry store.

Jewelry store gets robbed and Jamie knows who it is...her boyfriend Tom! She hides, watches him kill the owner and then rushes out.

She finds Ann-Marie and tells her what happened. Can't believe Tom would do a thing like that so both girls are in shock but Jamie knows what she saw.

Tom comes over later to take her to the dance and she can't believe he's acting like nothing happened. Jamie's freaking out and thinks Tom is playing games with her so she ditches him at the dance.

Jamie starts receiving weird calls and having someone follow her so she thinks it's Tom. Then the nightmares start...

Now it's pretty easy to figure out that Tom didn't rob the jewelry store because this is an older book and Stine is sometimes quite predictable. It's a case of mistaken identity and the real robber goes after Jamie because she dropped her wallet in the store. Her address is easy to get a phone number for from the operator.

Also it states Jamie should be wearing glasses but doesn't because she is just that vain. So any guy who has a denim jacket and white-blond hair can look like Tom from far away and it's established that Tom is poor.

Jamie is not my favorite character. Ann Marie is a better person because she treats her friend nicely by trying to make her laugh and not treating her like she is crazy through this whole ordeal.

Jamie is an awful person. She turns on her boyfriend with no real evidence and almost turns Tom into the police. Tom doesn't deserve Jamie because when the real bad guy finally comes after...he jumps on top of a moving vehicle and rides the kidnapping van all the way out into the woods!

Pretty good climax with a fakeout but then everything is fine, the day is saved, PTSD doesn't exist and Tom forgives Jamie for thinking he was a murderer when she learns he missed their date to talk to his swim coach and quit the team. Ha ha ha we both almost died because Jamie is a twit...

Again it's only my opinion so if you haven't read Broken Date, go right ahead. It's entertaining enough but it's not Stine's best.

I want to start this first by saying that I love R. L. Stine and everything he writes is worth your time, even if some books are definitely better than others.

To my understanding, this is one of the earlier books he wrote with a teen audience in mind, and it definitely shows. He hadn't exactly found the teenage voice he carries so strongly in things like the fear street novels later on or even his point horror books. He also hasn't quite found the pacing for his writing or the beats he needs to hit. I found a lot of this book to feel clunky and like a first draft rather than a final one. Maybe there were tweaks he could've made or scenes he could've shuffled around. I'm not sure, something just wasn't fully right.

That being said, it was still fun, and a good way to kick off my month of dedicating reading for vintage YA horror!

Let's start this off by saying I grew up reading these YA Horror Novels and I really do enjoy R.L. Stine as a writer.

This particular book kept fluctuating between a solid 3 to a 3.5. I can honestly say I absolutely hated the main character. All she could do was whine about how her life would never be the same because of this "event". . . But not for the right reasons. I just really wanted her to be killed off. . . I enjoyed some of the twists and turns and I do genuinely enjoy R.L Stine's YA horror novels. This one was just a teeny bit disappointing. All I can say is that if you want a great R. L Stine YA Horror, head to the Fear Street Saga.

I didn’t like it. I think that considering she wasn’t wearing her glasses I wouldn’t have just been so quick to just assume that it was your boyfriend that killed the jeweler. Like she can’t really see without her glasses and she saw WHITE HAIR that’s it. And she was like oh my god I just saw my boyfriend kill a jeweler. She didn’t ask him and she was scared of him. Making him very confused. I would have been ticked to be honest. I would have demanded they tell what in the world was going on. But no she had even convinced her best friend that it was in fact her boyfriend that she witnessed murder someone.

Let’s head back to the nostalgic world of Point Horror Stories. A world similar to the one of Fear Street.

It starts with a broken date and then a visit to the shopping centre.

Soon you see a sight that cant be unseen. A sight that turns your world upside down.

Then the terror starts

Being followed
Receiving threatening phone calls
Being kidnapped

Has your curiosity been sparked?

Not one of R.L. Stine's better books, but it was a quick fun read.

Jamie's boyfriend, Tom, broke their skating date. So, she goes to the mall with her friend where she witnesses a robbery and murder at the jewelry store. Now she thinks her boyfriend is trying to kill her...

(I guessed the who/what/why pretty early)

not stine’s best imo

also it really annoys me that so many books from this era (not just stine’s) put these blonde women on the cover and then on page one of the book, the MC has brown, red, or (as is the case for Jamie in this book) black hair. like why????? it’s a small, inconsequential thing but i hate it

As mentioned in most other reviews, some parts of this story are a little predictable, and a lot hinges on Jamie not being the brightest crayon in the box. But from Jamie's perspective it was pretty scary (read: very stressful) and very fast-paced. I enjoyed it!
