A Monster Haven Story, book six

When Zoey Donovan found out monsters are real, her life changed—mostly for the better. Since then, she's fought bad guys, saved the world a time or two and earned the love of a growing family of humans and Hidden creatures alike. But the danger that's chased her from the beginning is finally here.

Shadow Man, aka The Last Hidden, has stepped out of the story humans wrote for him and into the real world, hell-bent on stealing children. Fiction has become reality and Shadow Man intends to break the Covenant, reclaim the Hidden, and kill all Aegises along the way…triple bad news for Zoey and her mother, the only two Aegises still alive.

Zoey will have to rescue the stolen kids and hunt down the most terrifying villain humanity has ever imagined. But how can she fight a creature only invented a few years ago? If Shadow Man triumphs, the world as she knows it will end. If Zoey succeeds in driving him out, the people she loves the most may be lost to her forever.

How not to ruin a series:

1. Don't make any major changes in the in-between novellas! I thought this was common sense, but apparently not. In book 5, the couple is broken up; in book 6, they are engaged. I can only assume that I missed major plot changes in the short stories, that I have not and nor will I ever read.

2. Continuously develop characters. And don't - DON'T - under ANY circumstances, regress character development. In the first book, the heroine was cute and her attitude, abilities and reactions were acceptable. But reading the same sh*t in six books, requires immense fortitude. However, what made this book intolerable was the regression of the character's attitude and abilities. She actually forgets the abilities that she has, and has to be reminded of them. Or she just freezes and acts completely unnatural for someone who has been continuously surviving world ending apocalypses.

3. Do NOT make your heroes and heroines incompetent! For God's sake, they know who the traitor is, and he still manages to kidnap the heroine's friend and kill two other very important people (who came to heroine's place to be safe). And this is just one example - the entire series is filled with such drivel!

4. Don't let go of your strengths. The most impressive part of the series was the world building. Beautiful, rich and plentiful. That is until, the author stops introducing new characters and tries to introduce drama. Epic fail!

5. Don't take liberties with your basics! There is nothing worse than a plot, that has convenient pitfalls or solutions. Take for example, the fairy ring! Through out the series, the author has introduced different rules which allows them to be crossed, and made it so that it was convenient to the plot that the author had thought of. This is highly irritating.

The series started out so well, and then it went completely downhill. Or to be fair, it plateaued. It could have been so much better! There was a lot of potential, but unfortunately, neither the plot nor the the characters live up to it. Empaths are one of my favourite brand of psychic ability, but I have read many books with better creativity and understanding than this one.

I finished the series for the sake of finishing it, but the last couple of books were a total waste of time.

I've been a huge fan of the Monster Haven series since I first read Monster in My Closet a few years ago. These stories never fail to make me laugh and I love the way R.L. Naquin always comes up with such weird and wonderful magical creatures to include. As much as I was looking forward to reading Phoenix in My Fortune I'm still really sad that it was the last book in the series. I'm glad that it's going out on a high but I would happily have continued reading more books about Zoey and her friends.

I'm deliberately going to keep this review vague because I think most people who are reading it are already going to be fans of the series and will know what to expect from one of these stories. If you haven't discovered this world yet then I'd recommend starting at the beginning, these books really need to be read in order to make the most of the character development and the story arc that has developed across all of the books. These are really fun, light hearted stories though and I'd highly recommend them to fans of the supernatural.

Zoey and her friends are finally facing off against the enemy that has been coming after them via third parties for a while now. He is a danger unlike anything they've ever faced before and the risks have never been greater. Phoenix in My Fortune is a bittersweet ending to the series, it ties up all the loose ends and gives us a lot of closure but at the same time it's not all rainbows and happiness and there are a few tears to be shed along the way.

I'm so sad that this series is over, I've enjoyed every minute spent with Zoey and I'm going to miss her and the rest of the gang. I really hope that R.L. Naquin will decide to revisit this world in the future even if it's only in occasional short stories or a spin off series. That's not because anything has been left hanging, it's actually all tied up really nicely, but because I'm not ready for it to be over. I'm looking forward to starting her new Mount Olympus series in the meantime though and I'll definitely be watching out for anything else she publishes in the future because I love her humorous writing style.

Everyone has gone their own way as Zoey stays at home and watches for any sign of the coming apocalypse. When children start to go missing in the local area, Zoey joins the hunt. She soon realises that the missing children are unhurt and that something is doing this to get her attention. On discovering what is lurking in the dark, it is time to gather all the troops to prepare for battle.

Shadow Man is here to unleash terror and destroy the final Aegises, signalling the apocalypse that Zoey has been dreading. She still cannot read the book that Aggie left her and is clueless how to protect herself and her loved ones. When Shadow Man takes the sons of Tashi and Molly, Zoey knows she and her team must fight back, and as more kidnaps happen, Clara figures out how the book can be read-and takes action.

I find the very idea of Shadow Man pretty darn scary and he would've given me nightmares as a kid! The way he is able to get inside the fairy ring to look in the windows at Clara and Zoey is creepy and the fact that none of the others seem able to see him puts our gang at a serious disadvantage. It is only when the wonderful Silas pops by for a visit to help, that they find a way to let others see the monster. Silas realises that only one person at a time can see Shadow Man but he has a plan to get round this problem. Yea Silas! Luckily, Phil is there to provide snot to balance out the bad luck that Silas brings. If you don't understand that sentence, you obviously haven't read book 2 in the series!

Even in amongst the horror, everyone is trying to carry on as normal. Riley and Zoey are engaged but it seems the wrong time to be planning a wedding when everyone could die. Maurice and Sara continue their romance and Zoey misses having him around until everyone moves back to deal with the new threat. Clara and Darius choose to remain at Aggie's house so Shadow Man cannot target both Aegises at once. The headache of the book that cannot be read bugs Zoey as she needs to find out how to stop this threat.

You just knew there was going to be drama as the gang try to find a way to destroy the monster. There was some interesting action, a sprinkling of humour and lots of angst and worry. It was a satisfying ending to a series that I have enjoyed so much and I really hope that there will be other Monster Haven short stories-Maurice coming to stay with Clara and scaring Zoey, Maurice and Pansy, more days in the life of Maurice behind Zoey's back...I'm just not ready to say goodbye to Maurice yet!

This is the last book in the series. If you haven't discovered the wonderful world of Zoey and the Hidden before now - Congratulations you officially missed the boat! Especially if you have been reading my blog for any length of time. All have been featured on the blog, and all but book 4, Golem in My Glovebox have been Quote-Tastic picks.

As the last book in the series, I really, really don't want to give any spoilers away. Let's just say that our girl Zoey has come a extremely long way and I am so proud of her. There are some serious tough times in this book, and yet she has grown and matured enough to mostly handle everything being dealt to her.

All of our favorites from previous books make appearances and even though I was sad about how things ended, they made sense in the Monster Haven World. Some of the clues that were dropped were obvious and others I never did quite understand, but so goes the ways of fortunes and oracles. There was a beautiful symmetry to the ending of the book from the beginning of the series, that left me with a smile on my face and wishing Zoey and friends a Happily Hidden After. I am finishing this series off as a 5 star read.

Thanks to Netgalley and Carina Press for the opportunity to read and review the book.

On one hand, I hate to see a beloved series end. Sometimes I just want them to go on and on forever, but I know that isn’t feasible or wise. On the other hand, I know that it’s important for a series to end on the right note instead of dragging things on too long. R.L. Naquin has done a perfect job of ending the Monster Haven series at the right time for all of the characters. This final book ranks pretty high in my list of perfect endings. Everything worked out exactly the way I wanted it to…well almost everything as of course there are always going to be tragic loses in a battle to save the world.

This book had so many moments that made my chest ache. It was filled with happy tears, sad tears and of course tears from laughing too hard, just like all of the books before it. Zoey and her family of Hidden were faced with a nearly impossible bad guy. It was great to see friends from the past come to help Zoey and give her ideas on how they could stop the person trying to end the world as they knew it.

The way this book ended was absolutely perfect. I couldn’t think of a better outcome myself. I desperately hope that someday we will get some kind of follow-up to this series. A spin-off maybe featuring one of Zoey’s family members or maybe somebody’s kids. I just want more of this world, I don’t care how we get it. It’s so hard to say goodbye, but thankfully I can come back and re-visit these characters whenever I want. I have a feeling it might be sooner rather than later.

A quick read that lead to a solid and more positive ending for the series then I was expecting. My main complaint in the last two books have been too many characters, this time around most of the characters are gone and its easier to keep track of things. Secondly this book wasn't as dark as the past couple of books either and that's for the better, Zoey's character to me at least, wasn't meant to deal with the super dark stuff so this one while not as lighthearted as the first two books it wasn't the stressed out doom and gloom of the last few. It was sad to see that not all the characters made it to a happy ending but that wasn't unexpected either. Overall I thought the series was good but I'm not a fan of the modern setting fantasy books so this was an unusual type of book series to finish.

Let me tell you how I cried like a baby. And it wasn't for the first big death scene. It was for the end, the most magnificent thing I think I've ever read. Oh my God, I swear if I would have been in public, someone would have thought my mom died. I knew some big things were coming. I knew it was going to wrap up, being the last book of the series. I also knew to tell myself not to act like I just lost my best friend. And yet, that's exactly how I took this one. I read Zoey and her stories from the beginning. I happened to see this crazy cool looking cover on Netgalley, and requested it. And yay, I got my hands on Monster in My Closet. This gave me Maurice. Who is the ultimate best friend, that wonderful little closet monster. Maurice and Zoey have been together since the beginning. You'll have to read that one to understand that. And we met Riley, Aggie, Bruce, Sara, Darius, Kam, Iris, Andrew, Milo, Howard. I mean there's a lot of awesome characters introduced in here. Then we got Pooka in my Pantry. I was already hooked after book one, so I immediately requested it on Netgalley the day it was put on there. There we met Silas. HA! I can't say too much. In Fairies in my Fireplace, this is the first big whammy I got. I still remember how much I cried like a baby. I also remember how much this book made me love the series so much that it became a must have. Golem in my Glovebox gave me Gris. And we get Zoey's mom. Demons in my Driveway brought the zombie apocalypse, literally, and introduced us to Shadow Man. Bernice and Art are official character now. And even though it took a big tole on her, Zoey saved the world, again.

The bad guys are back, except it's just one. And he's the mother of scary, because his biggest goal is to kill every last Aegis, which is only Zoey and her mom. And though there's all the characters that Zoey saved over time, willing to help her, it's really hard when no one but her can see him. After everything that's happened, you would think Zoey could get a break, but this one is maybe the darkest of the books. He's stealing kids, he's stalking Zoey, and no one can see him but her. Zoey has become the best heroine one could ask for in a book. She's grown so much, she's changed a good bit, and she's learned. And best yet, she's gunna make sure everyone makes it out alive, even if it means sacrificing herself.

We've followed this series to this mark. The writing is flawless, magnificent, brilliant. I actually caught on to the messages Zoey was getting, BUT I was NOT prepared for THAT ending. I had a suspicion on one part, but I lost a little piece of my heart at the end. I also cried happy tears with the end ending. After all the bad, sometimes there really needs to be a good. :) And I loved Maurice's little silly song at the end. I am so glad I took a chance on a book I wasn't sure about in the beginning. I'm thrilled that the publisher loved me enough- probably all the messages I sent them about this series- to let me read them all! I know that this is the end of the series, but I am saying every prayer under the sun that this author finds a way to continue some kind of spin off with this. These characters, the world building, and the history of each character and myth is just too good to let go! I will seriously miss so many of these characters! An AMAZING BITTERSWEET MAGICALLY DELICIOUS 5 PAWS!!!

PHOENIX IN MY FORTUNE is a fond farewell to a wonderfully wacky universe filled with uniquely diverse characters and with tons of heart at its core. This story is a lot more serious than the previous books in the Monster Haven series as it has to wrap up a pretty dark series storyline involving the destruction of the world as our beloved characters know it. There is action, death, life, mystery, magic, and mayhem all wrapped up into this story that makes it worth a re-read many times over.

The Shadow Man or the Last Hidden is a pretty interesting bad guy to have as he embodies many of our modern myths that aren't fully formed. This proves tricky as there aren't really any guidelines to actually defeating him. I liked the way he was 'defeated' as it was a kind way for him to go and fit with the kindhearted person that Zoey is. The conversations Zoey has with the First Hidden are really frustrating as it basically speaks in riddles to her. Alas, any character talking with an oracle of any sort is always going to be riddled to death and given non-answers.

Zoey has come so very far from wielding a plunger in MONSTER IN MY CLOSET. She's become such a competent leader and matured so much by this last book with a huge circle of friends and family to back her up. I loved seeing glimpses of how each side character is evolving in their life and relationships. I really felt like I knew these characters so well by the time I started PHOENIX IN MY FORTUNE that it was kind of bittersweet to leave them. There is so much love and caring between these characters that even when something horrible is happening I can still feel the love radiating through the pages and know everything will be alright.

If you haven't gotten it by my constant gushing of all of the Monster Haven series books that pass my eyes I love this series and PHOENIX IN MY FORTUNE does not disappoint. It is a brilliantly bittersweet ending to a series that will stay with me for a very long time. If you haven't started this series, you really should give it a try.

Zoey Donovan, one of the last Aegis' left in the world is about to face off with a big bad. The previous book built up the final story arc so you go into this one knowing something big is going to go down. The final Hidden is revealed, and it takes on something that I feel I've heard about before in real life. It's based on Shadow Man, a legend that is cycling through the humans and since so many people are believing in that it caused it to become real as a Hidden. The Hidden are beings like dragons, fairies, trolls, etc. They're protected by the Aegis' and the fact that they're real is hidden from normal humans. Anyway back to Shadow Man, when he arrives, Zoey and her ragtag gang of friends are noticing local news reporting that children are going missing. This happens a few times and Zoey and the gang know they have to put a stop to Shadow Man before things escalate and he takes a life.

Phoenix in My Fortune was a lovely ending to the series, it closed up loose ends and was a satisfying read. It's slightly bitter sweet since I remember so fondly reading book one in the series not so long ago. I have issues letting go of a series I enjoy as some of you know. I normally delay reading the last book in a series due to not wanting to give it up. I've been trying to not do that so I read this one when it was released. Still sad the series is over, but R.L. Naquin did say there is a possibility of a spin off series in the future, so I'll keep my hopes up for that. All in all I love this series as a whole and highly suggest it if you're looking for a unique Urban Fantasy. Props to R.L. Naquin, and I hope to read another of her books in the near future.

Update: As this now came at the conclusion of my re-read it was extra sad to say goodbye to this crew. Seeing the people I've come to adore find their ending (good and bad) made it hard to get through this one. Still a fun and quirky series, even at the re-read.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow - what a wonderful end to a completely entertaining series. There are HEAs for everyone and all the loose ends are neatly tied up.

I fell in love with Zoey and her bunch of misfits from the first time I met them. They are all so unique and wonderfully witty that I have often found myself laughing and smiling along with them. If you haven't had a chance to check out this series, you should go back to truly appreciate this great read. We left these characters dealing with some loss, but worried about this "last hidden." They had a little reprieve, but things are changing rapidly.

Zoey and her mother are the last protectors around and they are tasked with something impossible - stop the end of the world as they know it. With little support from a system that is rebuilding, Zoey is the leader of an army of hidden that she has accumulated along the way. Their bond is unbreakable and they all support her as she marches against the end of an era. This last hidden has shown up too early, broken all the rules and appears just as confused as they are. The battle might not be as bloody as you'd expect, but there are some bittersweet losses. What would an ending be without some tears? The very end, though, is very sweet. I'm sad to see these characters go, but happy with the way it was done. Thanks for the wonderful series!

It saddens me to say that "Phoenix in My Fortune" is the sixth and final book in the Monster Haven series. One thing for sure, Ms. Naquin should be applauded for ending the series while it is still on top unlike many series that continue on despite the waning story lines.

In this story, Zoey and her mother are the last two aegesis alive;yet, their lives are in danger with the appearance of Shadow Man. So, Zoey calls in all of her friends (my favorite characters) to assist her in catching him. They of course want to keep her safe. Maurice the closest monster is back and dating Sara, Zoey's bff. Also, Sara and Zoey plan to close down their party planning business after one final wedding for a mysteriously absent client named Fiona. It is clear that change is in the wind and your favorite characters are in various stages of moving on.

There is plenty of action and intrigue but there aren't any real surprises. The clues that are dropped along the way, makes it clear what every outcome will be; thus the reason for my 4 Star rating vs. 5 Star. This is a series that charmed me from the beginning and also in the end. If you haven't read it, do yourself a favor and place it on your ' to read' list.

This is the final book in the Monster Haven story arc. Zoey's been waiting for the final showdown, but all has been quiet for the last few months. Zoey's mom has moved into Aggie's cottage, Maurice and Sara are traveling the world via the Closet express, Kam is off doing her Soul catching. Things seem to have settled down. Zoey and Riley are back together, and planning their wedding, she's getting along better with her mother now that Clara and Darius are no longer living in the same house as her. Sara is happy and in love, as well. But they all know it can't last. The final Hidden has taken his name.

When children start turning up missing in Zoey's neighborhood she knows the Shadow Man has come out of the Ether, and is ready to take out Zoey and Clara, and take his place as the ruler of the Hidden.

While I hated that this was the last book, it was still extremely satisfying. It tied up all the loose ends very well, and left a bit of an opening for any short stories which she might want to put out. Also, we get the spin-off with Kam.... so we're not completely deprived of the Hidden universe.

"Phoenix in My Fortune" is the sixth and last book in R.L. Naquin's Monster Haven Series. After a four month reprieve after the end of the last novel, the last hidden has finally arrived in the shape of the Shadow Man. At first he is just an after image in her peripheral vision. But then after a group of kids disappear, Zoey and her family of hidden and nonhidden humans band together to bring them home safe and sound. However, the Shadow Man isn't done. Sure he takes his sweet time taunting Zoey and her mother, but he's always in the back of their minds. Change is in the air. It is hard and it is bittersweet. But it's up to Zoey to keep it together long enough to face the Last Hidden once and for all. Will she rise from the ashes like the Phoenix or will her flame go out forever? Overall, I loved this series. And I am left with that bittersweet feeling that comes with finishing the last novel in a series. I can only hope that master story teller R.L. Naquin will surprise Monster Haven fans with additional short stories that take place after the end of "Phoenix in My Fortune".

A Great Series From Start to Finish! Amazing!

I decided to try this series after reading the "Muse" stories. Wow was it worth every penny and every moment I spent. I ended up reading each story back to back (I do love getting in on an already existing series ;) !). The amazing thing for me was that there was never a dull moment, never a point were I was just reading to get to the next interesting thing. It was all interesting and fun. Yes there were a lot of scary moments for Zoey, and yet you always knew that she'd get thru them. Although, thankfully the author didn't make things easy on her. She got hurt, she had loses, and tragedy. But she also had wonder, triumph and awesome people around her to get her thru everything that happened. I really can't rave enough about this series. If you like humor, pathos, and a non-stop adventure to go along with your fantasy then read this series!

*NO Spoilers!

So sad this series I really love is over, but I am glad R.L. Naquin has given it such a loving and awesome ending. I am thrilled!

Zoey's final showdown is finally here and the stakes are higher than ever before. Phoenix in my Fortune made me cry, laugh and root for the heroes so much, it felt like a roller coaster.

I hope someday R.L. Naquin revisits this world or at least gives us a short story in the future, I would love to catch up with all my beloved characters!

If you enjoy UF, you should definitely check out this series. Thanks Naquin for awesome stories and an even better world to get lost into!

R L Naquin is one of my favorite new authors. I feel a happiness coming through her stories even when sad/terrible things are happening. This is the last of her series of Monster Haven, and I think that might be ok. I can reread them! I had read the first 3 books in the series, and I do recommend reading them in order. I usually know what is going to happen before Zoey does, but that is ok also. Zoey is an Aegis, one who helps and protects the hidden (fairies, golems, monsters etc) in our human world. These days this is usually not an easy task. There is a lot of caring and love between the people and the creature people in these books. Read them.

Fantastic Finale

I'm sad this seems to be the end of the series. Zoey's final battle begins as cryptic as all the others. She'll lose much more and gain some too. Shadow Man is on the loose taunting Zoey and her mother. He's kidnapping children and must be stopped. While he's busy tormenting the team cryptic messages from the First One are difficult to understand but explain exactly what has to be done in order to save everyone. Can Zoey figure it out? Meanwhile, the fairies ring is destroyed and danger lurks all around. Love this series. The characters are well developed and grow in the readers heart and mind.

This series will make you FEEL

I am so sad to have read the last word of this series. I loved all of the books. I loved all of the characters, the worlds, the family and relationships. I wish there were more books or spinoffs of the characters. The few shorts that this author has written in regards to different characters are also wonderful. I want more. I want more of the brownie family, more or the gnomes, more of the pygmy dragons and Andrew, Sara and Maurice. Please don't let it end. Read these books. They will make you FEEL.

For some reason I was expecting something lighter from Phoenix in my Fortune, it's probably the that the title sounds frothy and fun, but considering this is the final book or of six I should know better since there is always some serious stuff in mix. The wrap up of the series brings back many of the past players and has tearful moments (both of sorrow and joy) and leaves Zoey and the Hidden with a bittersweet HEA.

Bittersweet. This was a wonderfully written conclusion to the Monster's Haven series, but it's incredible to think there won't be any more. I've been reading these stories for years and have fallen in love with Zoey, Riley, Maurice and the gang. This was a perfect (if at times bittersweet) conclusion to their journey and I thoroughly recommend it to fans of the series.

I'm a sucker for these kinds of stories. Although the description hardly touches the main storyline it gives you that immediate feeling of "this is going to be fun!". The hidden world of monsters is in trouble and they need help. This light hearted book series, which is a complete and finished series, has a way of getting to you. The monsters become humane and at some point tears are involved. Anyone with a weakness for the underdogs should read this.

Satisfaction for the end of a beloved series.

Zoey. Riley. Maurice. Sarah. Mom. Darius. Molly. Walter. Kam. And all the rest. This series held up. These characters mattered. This finale honored each story by giving them life. Dignity. The humor fed the soul, the tears reminded me, as Reader, I'd made a commitment to read this series. The author kept her promise. For that, I will always be grateful.
I will read ANYTHING written by R.L. Naquin. You should, too.

Final book of the excellent Monster Haven series. Shadow Man made for a creepy villain with a fascinating history. Lots of favourite characters return for the showdown--like Gris from Golem in my Glovebox--and there were still plenty of laugh out loud moments to break the tension. I especially enjoyed Zoey's last job as wedding planner.

Wonderfully written....

I have read all 6 stories and each one is so well written as the first. My heart is both happy and sad....but that is why I love these books...you never know what will happen, who will leave ..and the sadness and love that i have for every character in the story....hope Zoey and Riley have their happy ever after...

I've enjoyed this series and was sad to hear this was the last book. It read how I felt. A bit blue. A lot more serious than other books. It was lovely to have all the characters make an appearance for the last big battle. Glad everything got resolved and that ending was especially sweet. It brought the reader full circle to book one.

Nice end to the series

I've really enjoyed the whole Monster Haven series, and I'm a bit sad to see it end. That said, Phoenix In My Fortunes does a nice job of wrapping up the story and all the story lines and I'm hopeful there will be a new series from this author in the not so dusty future.
