Sargasso

Rate this book
The Bermuda Triangle. Dozens of ships have disappeared in its dark waters. Amber and her friends never expected to find them on their overnight cruise through the Sargasso Sea, but when their yacht is hijacked by local pirate captain Lito Porto and his crew of roughnecks, they soon find themselves adrift in a vast armada of derelict ships. Far more than the Triangle could possibly have swallowed. And they are not alone. Freakish figures haunt these decks. The plant and animal life is twisted, aggressive and glowing a cool neon blue. The radio broadcasts a harsh, garbled language they have never heard, and a bright light flickers on the horizon, as if signaling them. Amber and Lito will have to join forces to escape this endless maze of abandoned ships. Along the way, they might discover the truth about the Bermuda Triangle itself...

Whew, this book had it all. Horror, blue mutants, time traveling, radiation, drug dealers, and one random alien all in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle. It didn't take long to suck me right on in because I needed to know what was happening to these people. A few edge of the seats moments to keep your heart pounding. I would have loved a better ending. Was hoping for a Dave Jones Locker moment, but alas no. Recommend!

Fun read

It really kept me guessing all the way to the end.
Plus, you don't know who's going to make it or not.
Two things I actually hated about this story.
There's never a good reason to include gratuitous violence and or death of an animal. Especially domestic pets. I almost stopped reading the rest of the story after Erics cat rage. I skipped it when I realized what was about to happen. This and the other one with the dog brought this rating from a 4 to a 3.

An OK read

This book was entertaining, but the characters were a bit too stock for me - even the dog was a stock character

An engaging book, but the animal cruelty nearly negated the entertainment factor. The scene with the kittens was sickening. For that reason, I'm not comfortable recommending the book.

Why have I been hanging on to this book for so long? I downloaded it ages ago and it got lost in my Kindle TBR list, so kinda forgotten. But I saw it the other day and thought I'd finally give it a crack. And wow, am I happy I did.

A group of college-aged rich kids take a trip to the Caribbean. On the way home, Eric, the son of the owner of the boat they are driving, decides to take a detour through the Bermuda Triangle. As an avid follower of the legend, this is his life-long fantasy. But, a group of pirates decides they really like his boat, and follow the group out and hijack them. During an escape attempt, though, a freak storm pushes them into a sort of alternative reality.

Here's where the fun then begins. This story is a bit of a genre mash up, with elements of high seas adventure, crime, loads of horror, post-apocalyptic creatures, and finally, sci-fi. Really well written, great character development and some really gripping horror.

I like rounding up my ratings. I would have given 4.5 stars only because the ending may have been a little predictable, and a couple small typos, but nothing that takes away from the story. I'll be exploring more of this author's books, for sure.

So much better than I expected!

There is one scene at the beginning of the book where a character kills kittens. I nearly threw my phone/Kindle app in completely revulsion. Do whatever you want to human characters in a book or movie, I’m fine. Harm animals, and I’m gone. Yet, I forced myself to keep reading, as the subject of the Bermuda Triangle is something i don’t find nearly enough books about. Not to mention, the story was well written and I really wanted to see that guy die horribly after that.

After that one scene, nothing was scary so much as intriguing. The Sargasso Sea is a spooky setting and the author made good use of it. This reminded me of David L. Goleman’s Beyond The Sea in how it blended urban legends with what could be possible. The characters were much more defined than the usual cast of horror novel cannon fodder and I actually enjoyed the book quite a bit. I’ll be looking for more by this author.

"Sargasso" was a thoroughly enjoyable read with a captivating setting that created a great ambiance. While the main characters were somewhat tropey and not fully fleshed out, they evoked a nostalgic feel reminiscent of early 2000s low budget horror movies, with classic archetypes like the bimbo, nerd, jock, and average guy. The pirates, however, had more varied backgrounds and motives, adding depth to the story.

The book offered a mix of sci-fi, horror (body and psychological), time and space, and otherworldly elements, maintaining a fast pace with a good blend of dread and mystery. It had some comical parts and a touch of romance, particularly in the dynamic between Amber and Captain Lito.

While I would have loved to explore more about this broader world, it was a quick and easy read, and my first experience with Connor's work was surprisingly fun. Though not groundbreaking, it was well-executed and entertaining. Definitely recommend.

B movie in book form which is a good thing

So let's start with the obvious, this book isn't going to be winning any literary awards or even end up on best sellers, and you know what, it doesn't matter. No instead this is a book equivalent to a (very good) B movie. It doesn't have any aspirations over than that and that's OK. The characters are all arechtypes of ones seen many times in this type of thing and the structure is even similar to a movie with multiple scenes and cuts. This is to its credit, its very well paced and draws you into the story, revealing only just enough each time to keep you intrigued by its central premise (even if predictable) in fact its so episodic it could make a very good short TV series. If you want a nice bit of escapism, then pick it up as worth a read.

This is just quality, i loved everything about it - the spoilt rich kids being idiots, pirates, and of course, the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle!

The writing was great. The first half of the books sets up the premise of the story and gets the reader to know the characters. A few creepy things start happening when they set sail and them all hell breaks loose.

The ending was certainly unexpected but enjoyable.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Russel never disappoints me, in fact he fact he always seems to amaze me. This was a really good read, it kept me staying up pass my bedtime and wanting to read as usual. It really wasn’t what I was expecting it to be, but it loved it. It kept me guessing until the end for sure. Very nice take on pirates and the triangle. I highly recommend it.

Please tell me there’s a movie of this book! What an incredible read this was. If there’s somebody out there thinking about making this movie please do! I’ll be standing in line to go watch it. Great great book! If you like reading about the Bermuda Triangle and imagine what might happen out there this is your book. So good.

Really good book!

I hate that kindle unlimited forces you to write 20 words minimum. Books would probably get way more reviews if we could just say "awesome book! I'd definitely recommend it!"

Top notch story telling

Who doesn't love a tropical holiday in the Caribbean. But this holiday will be like one you have never been on before. Strap in tight, it's going to be a wild, rough, & mind bending ride ahead.

Ghoulish yet humorous

This book really made me laugh out loud in a few places while cringing at the creepiness so of course I liked it!! Quick read got to the point no endless mind numbing pages of useless backstory. Rudeish and crudeish!

Loved this book! Russell C. Connor does an incredible job creating mystery and intrigue with his take on the Bermuda Triangle. Really playing with time and space for an interesting story featuring mysterious ships, heinous monsters, members of the undead, foreboding blue neone in the sky, pirates, mobsters, psycho rich kids, and lots of ooze. Amber and Lito are excellent conflicted leads who, even as adversaries, know they can trust each other more than members of their own groups.
