I figured it would be fun to do another Nightmare Room book, since I haven't read one in a while. This one is called Shadow Girl.I knew this was a super hero book going in and I really didn't know what to expect.Stine can be hit and miss with these. Some even surprise me how entertaining they can be with a really obnoxious character. The story begins with Selena. She is getting ready to go stay at her aunt and Uncle for Two months I think.Shes a little nervous because she has a cousin named Jada, who used to bully her.She called her Moo Cow and even cut her hair one time. They haven't seen eachother in 6 years. Her mom drops her off at the airport and begins to cry.Selena thinks this is weird because she's o ly going away for a little while. She gets there and meets Jada and her friend Stan. They are in Jada's room and she immediately begins to call her Moo Cow.She even tells her that the first day of school is spirit day and she needs to wear the school mascots clothes, but it turns out Jada gave her the wrong colors.Selena wants to call her mom ,but her Aunt and Uncle talk her into not calling her.She ends up reading a letter her mom gave her, which explains that she is sad she has to leave and her life wont be the same as before. She also tries calling Beth at home but she refuses to talk claiming she cant. One night while sleeping, selena hears Jada get up at around two thirty. She gets up to investigate but can't find her.The next day she asks where she went and she said to get a glass of water. The next night, she does the same thing. This time, however Selena sees Jada putting on boots, but she falls asleep.Selena ends up following her one night to a bookcase that moves and opens into a secret room. She asks Stan to follow her the next day and see what all of this is about. There is also these news articles claiming this guy is robbing people calling himself the weasel.I can't go to much further into the plot without giving much away,so I'ma leave it there.I fell like if Shadow Girl wasn't marketed as a superhero book,I would've been way more invested. The mystery was good, but I knew where it was going. We don't actually get to the super hero stuff until around page 70 and even then it's over pretty fast. The reason why all.of this is happening is especially anticlimactic.I also thought how shadow girl got powers was very underwhelming. She wishes for strength and flight,so it happens.I dont think was a terrible book though. The fight scenes were good, but somewhat cringy. This is the second worst superhero book I read from Stine.I still didn't hate it though. The mystery aspects and fight scenes were fun.I also thought the ending was very cute.I give Shadow Girl a three out of five stars.

A less obnoxious version of They Call Me the Night Howler, from the SlappyWorld series.
Story is completely uninspired; resorting to often used plot points and contrived twists. Also, I'm generally just not a fan of superhero type stuff.

The Night Howler before Night Howler. This book predates a pretty similar book called “They Called Me the Night Howler,” from Goosebumps. How does it compare? Well, they’re pretty much on par; I really like both, but I slightly prefer this one surprisingly. The arcs in this book are really sweet and I loved the ending—minus the final 2 pages, but that’s just how it is: a typical twist ending that is pointless and adds nothing. Anyways, the main character is great and the cousin is also really good. Her tormenting is explained quite well and I like the huge reveals in this story. There’s a nice sense of mystery in the first 70 pages, and I think there’s some solid moment in the second half. But truth be told, the story is surprisingly really simple and the backstory of certain things is never explained. It’s going in one direction the whole time, which isn’t bad, but it does feel a little… bland, for say. There’s also some cringe superhero nonsense, which I am not an enjoyer of when done wrong, which it isn’t usual for superhero horror from Robert Stine. The huge reveal was one of the most predictable reveals I’ve ever read. Like, it’s not even bad, just flat out “wow, I’m not even remotely surprised, I called this shit from page 10” type shit. Yeah. Overall, 9/10. This book is really solid, and whilst I’d never come back to it since it isn’t the most enjoyable story ever, it’s certainly a well written book with great characters.

Shadow Girl
Selena tells her friend Beth about how mean her cousin Jada is. The last time she visited it was years ago but she cut off one of her pig tails and kept calling her “mo cow” all the time. Beth tells her maybe she changed, but Selena doubts it. They promise to email. Beth doesn’t underhand why Selena has to go away for a month. Selenna says she’ll be going to Jadad’s school. At the ticket booth, Selena’s mom does something out of character. She starts to cry. She says she wrote Selena a letter. Her mom doesn’t answer her. She just runs off.

Selena arrives at her aunt Janets. Jada is in her room talking on the phone and her -friend- San is there. Jada hugs her and calls her “moo cow” and tells the story of how she feel down the steps and made a sound like a cow. Then she starts to imitate how she sounded. Jada says they’re going to have a great time tho. A curly red haired girl bursts into the room with blood trickling down her face and asks for help. The girl (Cindy) says she was robbed. She went to the cash machine for her mom and some men got in front of her. The whole thing makes Selena woozy. She hates the sight of violence. The men grabbed her wallet and throw her down on the sidewalk. Aunt Janet goes to call her mother. She didn’t get a good look at the men. Their hats covered their faces. Stan says too bad they aren’t superheroes. Selena introduces herself. Stan explains there have been a lot of robberies there. Welcome to Chicago. Selena gets a weird look from Jada when she says she wouldn’t be a super hero. She looks at the blood and it looks like red paint. She wonders if Cindy faked the whole thing.

Aunt Janet offers to take them shopping Saturday. Jada says she might have something else to do and gives Selena a cold look. She also gives her a look when she says she has to call her mother. But they tell her just to enjoy her dinner and they’ll call her later. Her uncle Will offers to take her to a deep dish pizz returant the next day and Selena gets the feeling they’re trying to keep her from calling he mom. Janant gives Selena a hard time about how many clothes she packed. She gives her one dresser. Then she starts to talk on the phone to Stan about Cindy. She makes fun of her clothes, but then she gives her a bunch of comics. They’re all about female superheroes. She asks wouldn’t it be cool if super heroes existed again. After this they go to sleep. Later when Selena wakes up at three in the morning, Jada’s bed is empty.

Selena asks her where she went last night the next morning. She said she went downstairs to get a glass of water. Selena says she was gone longer than that. Jadad changes the subject and starts talking about spirit day. Everyone has to wear green and gold, when she gets to school, everyone is wearing red and blue and all the student’s her feel e horribly. She runs out of the gym and takes off running. She runs to her aunt’s house and vows to think of something to do to pay Jada back. She wants to change her clothes but no one is at her aunt’s house. She doesn’t have a choice so she goes back to school. Her teacher tells her she should have told her cousin what to wear, Jada says she did. Selena wonders why Jada doesn’t want to be her friend. Stan says maybe Jada is kinda stressed. She doesn’t exactly know her. Selena points out she isn’t exactly trying either, He does admit tho sometimes she goes too far. When she gets home, she finds her mom’s letter and can’t believe what it says. She says soon she’ll learn the truth. Life with her was a lie. Try to forget her. Things will be hard but she’s on her own now.

Jada comes into the room and Selena asks her how she could do that. Jada thinks Its funny. Then Selena tackles her. Aunt Janet breaks them up. Jada says they weren’t really fighting. Then Selena tells their aunt what happened, Janet tho thinks it’s funny. Selena doesn’t see the humor in it. She decides to call her mom and ask to explain the letter. Noone answers. She rereads the line the hardest thing is knowing nothing will ever be the same. So she calls Beth. Beth says she can’t talk and sounds like she’ss about to cry. She says she can’t talk to her or she’ll be in danger. Then she says don’t call there again and hangs up the phone.

Selena shows the letter to her aunt, but she doesn’t know why she wrote it. She promises the next time they talk she’ll get to the bottom of it. Selena tries to call her mom again but it says the number is no longer in service. She tries to call her aunt Rose but her number is also disconnected. She tries to call her mother’s job but she’s told no one with the name Alice Miles works there. Selena catches her cousin sneaking out again at 2 in the morning. But the next morning, she thinks she’s dreaming. She hears her aunt and uncle talking the next day about a robbery and someone going around in a blue mask that leaves a card that says “The Blue Weasel”.

Selena asks Jada again where she went. Jada plays dumb. Selena brushes it off again as dreams. There’s a test in school, but Selena fails it. Jada gave her the wrong chapters. She marches up to her and asks her why she hates her. Jada tells her she’ll find out soon. That night again she sees Jada getting dressed. She decides to follow her and solve the mystery. She tries to follow her. She sees Jada pull a book and a hidden door appears. She decides to explore when her cousin isn’t there.

Jada looks a mess the next day. Another robbery is announced but there’s no information on the person who entered houses in the middle of the night. Selena asks Stan if he’ll help her spy on Jada. She promises it won’t take long. Jada will be going out skating with Cindy. On the way home, she ells him what she saw, They find the passage and inside is an empty room. Then they see a shelf with a cape, black tights, and a smask. They wonder if Jada is the burglar, Then they hear a voice, Someone’s home. They make it out of the passage in time. Jada asks what Stan is doing there. He says he’s come to see her. He forgot she was going out with Cindy. When Selena checks the operator says the listing has been removed. All the emails she sent were returned.

Selena finally gets up the courage to tell Jada she needs to talk to her but she’s gone. Selena gets a call from Jada and she tells her she’s in trouble and being held as prisoner. She says Selena is the only one that can help. She tells her about the hidden room. She tells her to put on the costume and gives her an address. When they see her, they’ll run. She tells her to hurry. She’s scared. Selena is hesitant. Jada could just be playing a trick on her again, but she can’t let anything happen to her either. So she follows instructions. When she gets to the riht house, it’s dark. So, she goes inside. The ceiling light comes on and a figure in red steps out. She calls Selena “Shadow Girl” and says she’s her enemy “The Red Raven”. IT’s Jada. She asks why she made her put on her costume. Jada ells her to look at the oval. When she does she sees her face. Jada asks her didn’t she wonder why the costume fit so well. Then she tells her about all the worlds. Now she should understand why she’s been so jealous. She says her job is to test her, turn her into a fighter, and then destroy her. Selena says it’s a joke and trhows the mask off. Jada says it’s her destiny. Aunt Janet comes out of the shadows and ells her she has to leave the past in the past and accept what is.

She says the house is their hideout. Her husband doesn’t know about this part of their lives. Aunt Janet then shows her a glowing book. She calls it “The Book of Fate”. She tells her they come from another world. They have a job to protect the innocent. She had to be cut off from her mother and friends. They tested her with the robberies but she almost lost her lunch. Jada says she didn’t choose to be “Red Robin”. She wanted to be “Shadow Girl”. Her aunt says yes now they are divided. She tells Selna to train well and then she vanishes. Jada tells her she didn’t want to tell her the rest of the story. According to the book, “Shadow Girl” kills “Red Ravine”. Selena runs from the room and then realizes she’s flying.

She decides to tell Stan and then runs to his neighborhood and finds him. Stan doesn’t seem to know so she decides not to tell him. He tells her about a party Jada’s having in a neighbors’ house. When she’s walking home, she sees screams and sees a boy surrounded by five boys. They start to pull him behind a gas station. Selena yells for them to stop and then they see her and yell get her. She runs into a garbage can, trips, and the boys surround her. She almost gets hit by an SUV but it scares the boys away. Selena decides not to let them get away with it.

She goes back to the boy (dressed in her costume). The boy is badly injured but before she can help him the boys return and they have bats. They try to hit her with their bats, but she’s wicked fast and has super strength. It’s not long before they run off. But it’s a little too much for her and afterwards she pukes her guts out. She tells Jada she can’t do it but she tells her she doesn’t have a choice. Jada gives her a tip in the secret room. The power is in the pendant. But when Selena tries to practice her powers, they don’t seem to be there. When she tries to lift a rock she can’t. Then she tries to fly and she just falls. Then she starts to fly. Yhe secret is she has to wish for the powr first. But she makes up her mind she doesn’t want to be a super hero, On the way home she sees “red Raven”. She tells Jada she doesn’t want to do this. Just then she sees two girls on a bike and a car coming toward them. Selena saves there lives. The man in the car asks how she did that. She says she’s “Shadow Girl” and fly’s home. Jada asks it how it feels and she says terrible. Jada shoves her and tells her she won’t let her win. She tells her

They fight in the street. They fight in the air. Selena yells she doesn’t want this. Jada yells its her fate. She tells her she’s going to kill her. She rips off her pendant and tells her die Red Raven and she does. At the end, “Shadow Girl” is able to capture “The Blue Weasel” It’s Stan. Jada isn’t dead. She says she already knew Stan was the culprit. How else could he afford the new computer and DVD? She told him about the party and she knew he’d try to rob it. She gave Jada her pendant and she became “Shadow Girl” killing off “Red Ravine”. Selena tells her mom and she somehow feels she’s disappointed. She’s just glad to be normal again. On her mom’s bed, she sees .. the costume of “Red Raven”. She says she wasn’t supposed to see it.

My Thoughts
This tried to do what the Goosebumps book “The Masked Mutant” did. Only it didn’t do it nearly as welll. It kind of just feel flat in comparison. There weren’t any super huge shocks. I already figured that Jada wasn’t gonna be the one behind the robberies because again it’s never who the story points you in the direction to believe it is. I didn’t tho see it would be Stan, but then again who else *could* it have been. I suppose a good twist would have been if it had been Uncle Will. That would have been a really good twist. He could have been like “Where do you think I’ve been all those times I came home late? Did yal think you were the only ones?” There I go again giving R. L Stein twist. I really do need to get paid for this. But the mom being “red Raven” was a decent enough ending. It just needed a little something more.. Like her saying “And now I have to kill you Shadow Girl” and she jabs her her pendant into Selena’s chest and kills her.

Rating: 5 I just do not believe that every single kid in this school wore red and blue that day and she was the only one that didn't.

دختر سایه - از سری کتابهای تالار وحشت شماره8

I did not like it that much. It was cringy, plain, and a bit predictable. These superpowers, that fantasy atmosphere seemed artificial and copyist, as if the author tried too hard.
The story was too short, like there was not a proper material to discuss. The chatacters, their identities within contexts were not blended and spiced up well enough. Many events processed so fast, in an instant where made things unsatisfying.
The book made me pay attention more to Red Raven and Shadow Girl that I didn't even think about Blue Weasel at all, at least, this is how I felt. Even though it was an important character in the book, he was not mentioned that much but rather made it seem like a side character.

The story could be way betterrrrr than this.

Selena’s cousin just loved to torture and humiliate her. And she was staying with her for a whole month. Geez! Wait, did her mom just leave her there? Oh no! And what truth was she talking about?

When she tries to reach her mom, Selena makes another startling discovery: her mom didn’t exist and no one ever heard of her. What?!

Soon, the truth is revealed: Selena was Shadow Girl, a masked, caped superhero whose destiny was to fight her arch enemy—her cousin—Red Raven. Whoa!

It was written in the Book of Fates that Shadow Girl would kill Red Raven. Oh dear!

This was another R.L. Stine winner. The ending was a little too convenient, but I liked the superhero thing. Very cool to have superpowers!

I 1st read it when I was 13, I am 19 now, and I still reread this book over and over again. The story takes me back to the thrills it had given the teenage me. How I'd wished to be a character in the story! I would recommend it to any young teenager, and wish you get thrilled the same way that I did. Happy Reading!

This was the book that got me hooked. I don't even remember the exact plot or even the characters names now.

But the plot, the easy to read language plus my classmates' uninteresting choices of other books led me to love this one.

I hope to re-read this one day.

The story was about a clueless girl that happened to be mistreated by her cousin, jada.
She had been tricked into failing her test, being booed on the first day of school, getting her pigtails cut short when she`s six, felt from the stairs..etc.. And its all thanks to Jada..
A reason why she was being mistreated came down to her when she realized that her cousin had disappeared every night..

This is a cool story, but being twenty, you can`t help to realize that this story was a bit lame..i`m not going to say anything about reading a book on superheroes, but it was just that how the secrets being unravelled that irked me..It felt that the writer wasnot trying hard enough to think of a better plot..

Well, thats just me...But this is still good for children..

Definitely not one of his better stories, but my daughter enjoyed listening to it. I was quite bored with it most of the time. It had the element of mystery that his books typically have, that sort of Fear Street quality, but it was so damn cheesy, even for Stine who has a strong tendency toward cheesiness if he isn't careful. Would not recommend. I'll stick mostly with the Goosebumps!

I loved Selena in whole story.
I've read this story when I was a child but I still remember the plot and I think it was very cool! R.L Stine writes much but all of his book have their special line and style like this one which had it's own special one.
