A showcase of the best in contemporary compact residential architecture. The world is becoming more urbanized and densely populated. There is a virtually inexhaustible demand that is pushing up housing prices. Urban land is more precious. As well, changes in family structure, more single-person households, a desire to save money, reduce our climate footprints and live more simply have made microdwellings the fastest growing type of residence. To be successful as an enjoyable living space, however, a microdwelling must synthesize the best of contemporary functionality, efficiency and sustainability. The inhabitants' current and potential needs must be reconciled with physical, legal and budget limitations. The aim is to create spaces that improve quality of life and represent the resident's personality. Houses and Apartments Under 1000 Square Feet is a collection of more than 50 projects ranging from 215 to 958 square feet in size, along with a small selection of furniture. It aims to showcase the most significant examples of contemporary compact residential architecture. Each home is profiled over two to six photo-filled pages. Drawings include floor layouts, cutaways and landscaping plans. The houses and apartments are from around the world and represent a broad variety of architectural styles, functional applications, materials, natural environments and lifestyles. Due to the physical and budgetary limitations in this kind of house, one of the most important considerations is furniture, so a brief selection of furnishings has been included to complete this book. This is a stunning, cutting-edge source of inspiration and practical information for architects, designers, and homeowners.
Great little book - 30 or so small houses & apartments are showcased within. There are plenty of color pictures which I always appreciate, as well as floor plans, elevations, and cross sections, all which help to arrange and locate key features in your mind's eye. Many of the buildings are breathtaking - so open and bright, a few with trees (inside!) stretching from the ground floor, through the ceiling and up into the second floor. Some of the homes are quite odd since they are constrained by the lot size or city regulations - but even these are fascinating. If you're into "tiny homes" or modern architecture in general this book is worth a look.
This is a fine enough little picture book; it's a brisk read, and features thirty small apartments.
I do wish there was more focus on the functionality of these units. What trade-offs did the architects face? What do the residents find frustrating or lovable? How is the actual experience of living in one of these apartments? None of these questions find any answers here... but, again, at least the pictures are nice.
A lot of the houses are unfurnished, and the ones that are furnished are very plain and boring. I also find some of the language to be a little odd, almost too fanciful for the subject matter. Two stars because some houses were nice and the floor plans will be useful for building houses in the sims 4
A lot of great projects and overall a good read. However, some of drawings and images chosen aren’t too helpful in understanding the whole project or the concept.
