Ernest Paul "Ernie" Bushmiller, Jr. (1905 - 1982) was an American cartoonist, best known for creating the long-running daily comic strip Nancy. Bushmiller's work has been repeatedly addressed by other artists: Andy Warhol made a 1961 painting based on "Nancy"; the artist and poet Joe Brainard made numerous works based on Nancy; and many cartoonists have produced work directly inspired by or commenting on Bushmiller's art, including Art Spiegelman, Bill Griffith, Mark Newgarden and Chris Ware. The American Heritage Dictionary uses a Bushmiller "Nancy" strip to illustrate its entry on "comic strip."
As reflected in this specially selected collection of comic strips, Nancy sure does love to eat - fruit, veggies, and treats - she doesn't turn up her little slit of a nose at anything.
I got quite a few chuckles out of this one, though I was surprised at how many of the strips involved Nancy's attempts at dieting. I thought only today's little girls were obsessed with their weight . . .
Why am I so enthralled by Nancy? One of the biggest reasons - we like the same things - food, food food! And not the healthy stuff either - I’m talking junk food, dessert - yum! Nancy (like me) has a big appetite that she struggles to curb. We both find our joy (and our source of comfort) in ice cream no matter what the season.
