When a prominent naturalist is found dead in the owl sanctuary, the suspect list includes some of the town’s most influential citizens. Each one is up to something shady, but did one commit murder to hide what they were up to?
When the case takes a sudden turn involving a secret identity, and clues intersect with the investigation into Jo’s sisters’s cold case, Sam and Jo realize they are up against something bigger than they’d imagined.
As they try to solve both cases, Jo’s desire to buy her cottage so she can stay in town has unexpected results and Kevin is wrestling with a shadowy secret of his own.
Meanwhile Lucy and Major have entered into a truce... but will it last?
L.A. Dobbs is the not-so-cozy pen name of USA Today bestselling cozy mystery author Leighann Dobbs. Under the name L.A. Dobbs, she writes engaging mysteries that have twisty plots filled with secrets and lies.
Seeking Justice is another great small town mystery in the series about Sam Mason by L.A. Dobbs. I was hooked by the fact that it was a small town series and have never regretted it for a minute. In this book we get some kind of closure in an ongoing mystery through this series and we also have some new murder to solve. I really enjoy reading these books and soon there will be a new one available.
This is another installment in this small-town series. When a well-known naturalist is discovered dead in the owl sanctuary, suspicion falls on several of the town’s most respected citizens—each hiding secrets that could be a motive for murder. But the mystery deepens when a surprising connection to Jo’s sister’s long-unsolved cold case comes to light, pulling Jo and Sam into a tangled web of lies, secrets, and long-buried truths.
The dual investigations have twists, red herrings, and emotional depth. Jo’s determination to buy her beloved cottage adds a heartfelt thread to the story, while Kevin’s mysterious behavior keeps readers guessing about his true motives. On the lighter side, Lucy and Major's tentative truce adds moments of levity and warmth.
I've enjoyed this series but I feel it's time for all the secrets to come to light.
I waited, it seemed like forever,(really just a few months) for book 7 to be released. It was worth the wait. The characters in this stories are wonderfully portrayed. At the end of book six, Jo’s sister was added to the group. Of course she has a secret past and is running from it. (A requirement to be let into this series) The book touches on her secret, while closing two other cases and hinting at trouble to come. Ms. Dobbs carefully points out facts, in a very timely manner. It holds your interest, and of course Lucy is the best investigator. Major the cat acts like a Siamese kitty. And the scared little orange kitty that will not be caught at Jo’s trailer…well maybe in book eight. The stories are engrossing. I can’t wait for book 8 in the Sam mason series.
Finally some answers to the ongoing question throughout the series, but I am not going to ruin it for the reader. I have enjoyed the series and especially this last book, did not want to put it down. But just when I thought this was the end I see book #8 will be coming out later this year. My only comment is this...I live in a small town, with a hometown police force bigger than 4 officers and I think if we had as many murders, in such a short period of time as Sam's quiet little community, I might consider packing my bags and moving!
I love the books in this “Sam Mason K-9 Dog” series. Actually, I like anyone who trusts a dog’s instincts like Sam does his German Shepard, Lucy. When the Mayor finds a dead person in the owl sanctuary, this case takes off. Who would shoot a little owl in an owl sanctuary? Not that the dead person lying by the owl wasn’t important too. From the start of this case it seems like one thing leads to another for Sam. The case itself seems to uncover more secrets, and the small police department has lots to handle and many possible suspects.
I’ve read another L. A. Dobbs book and enjoyed it as well as this one. While I like small town mysteries, there isn’t a lot of description about the town in his books. White Rock obviously has a Mayor since he found the victim, and we read about the various suspects and their standing in the community, but that’s about it. Somehow, it doesn’t seem to matter in these stories. He tends to focus on the crime at hand, the small police force, Lucy their smart canine, and Major the cantankerous cat. Never once did he lose my attention.
Excellent book. This one, Seeking Justice, is Book 7. It looks as if Book 8 is already out. I’m heading to get it for sure.
This is the seventh in the Sam Mason Mystery. It is a well written-and crafted story. I enjoyed the Sheriff and Jo’s interactions, all the secondary characters really aren’t secondary. The Sheriff Department watches out for its own. Kevin has returned to limited duty, Jo’s sister is living with her and they have a desire to find out what happened to their sister.
It was a three year wait for this book, I’m hoping not to have to wait that long for the next in the series. This can be read as a standalone. If you’re looking for strong characters, this book has them in spades.
I was given an advanced readers’ copy and am not required to leave a positive review. Anxiously awaiting the continuation of the story lines.
I like the series pretty much, but I find each book to be awfully weak. The characters are likeable, with great backstories and amusing idiosyncracies; the plots are pretty good; the action riveting. But each book leaves me feeling unsatisfied. It's hard to pinpoint it.
And I will note that although she calls this a "K-9" series, or at least her publisher does, the dog doesn't really play all that much of a role in the investigation. It's there, but it doesn't seem to be all that well-trained or important to the solving of a mystery. Lucy is nice to have around but never does much of importance other than to growl at people she doesn't like or have amusing battles with the cat.
I'll go on reading them. But not as happily as I'd like to.
An environmentalist with a shady character is killed. Sam and Jo investigate along with their trusty dog, Lucy. Jo has finally confided in Sam about her younger sister’s disappearance many years ago that she has been secretly investigating. Kevin is back to work, but is experiencing some memory problems. This book brings closure to both Jo and her sister Bridget about Tammy’s disappearance when they were children. You really need to read this series from the beginning to understand all the characters. Now that some things are wrapped up, grab Telling Lies and read all the books straight through. It will be worthwhile.
This book was written so differently than the others. Almost as if by someone else or as an afterthought. The attention to detail is totally gone. Where was Wyatt this entire book? Lots of inconsistencies throughout… I thought there were no Beech Trees in this area, we figured that out early on in the series. The budding feelings between Jo and Sam were also forgotten and Jo seemingly forgot how to read people. I don’t know, not my “cup of tea” when it comes to the characters I’ve been invested in for 6 previous books.
At least we solved a case and got a break in the big one.
The storyline was really good, which is the only reason I kept reading it.
The writing was just awful. She used many of the same descriptions for different people, after halfway through the book, the dog Lucy, was referred to as "their K9, Lucy", but the character had already been well established, so calling her their K9 now, was really weird.
She referred to mountain road, which should have been capitalized, and then later it WAS capitalized but suddenly it was Mountain Loop Road.
It's pretty obvious it wasn't well proof read or edited.
At least in this book some of the secrets and mysteries were concluded. Seven books have been a long haul to come to this preconclusiom. The characters are well developed, including Lucy, and even Major. I enjoyed their dog and cat confrontation. I think they secretly like each other! Each book has its own case so we don't have to struggle along for the hidden secrets and lies.
As this is the 7th book in the series and the first one I’ve read as it was a freebie I found it difficult to connecting with the main characters, not one bit of information was shared about them, ages, appearance, clothing, ethnicity, just nothing, which made it hard to visualise them in my imagination. That said everything else was quite detailed and easy to visualise and made the book enjoyable to read. The plots were intriguing and solved.
I have rated yet again a five star in this book 7 of this series. A two thumbs up I would say. Of course the characters, the exciting plot , the town I just love. I love the twist and turns just drawing me in. Just reading and waiting who done it.?? and will Jo and her sister Bridgette finally get closure they both desperately need. I can not wait read the 8th book of this series.
With the death of an environmental activist in the owl conservation. Sam has his hands full as the mayor needs the investigation wrapped up quickly with the upcoming election. Jo catches a break on the case she has been looking into about her decades long missing sister.
This was a fun story with developed characters and a solid plot line.
Finding the murdered body of an owl and an unscrupulous environmental activist begins Sam’s trek to the unravelling of secrets, without Wyatt or Thorne in this outing; Kevin’s back to work with a faulty memory and a mysterious thumb drive to turn over to Sam and; Jo and Bridget finally get the closure they’re looking for. Rating: 3.5stars
As Jo brings Sam into her investigation of her long ago kidnapped sister. The work with her recovering addicted other sister along with Holden and Mick to follow a very cold trail.
Not only are they working on Tammy’s case but an activist is found murdered and they must follow the few leads to find the murderer.
I thought that book number seven of the series seemed more intriguing and flowed better. There were some nail biting moments when Jo went off on her own without notifying Sam or Reese where she was. Also the fact the Kevin didn't have his service weapon. The antics of Lucy and Major add levity to the story. I cannot wait to read #8.
A naturalist is found dead in an owl sanctuary. Jo's sister abduction comes into play while trying to find who killed the naturalist. Two murders solved one present and one from the past solved in this twist/turn mystery. Sam Mason the chief of police with Lucy his K-9 companion assisted in both cases.
A mystery: yes A murder: actually 2 of them Intriguing: yes A light read that keeps your interest just though to keep you reading knowing the guilty will be revealed soon. Didn't expect one of them to be the guilty party. The other a little less surprising. Ready to read another by this author knowing it will be similar yet looking forward to it.
So many twists and turns. Hard to put down as the whole story unfolds. I would love to read more of these kind of plots. Excellent example of what a writer can dream up with the right motivation and creativity. Spellbinding and a great way to spend some quality time enjoying such work.
As always the storyline draws you in. Its hard to put down. Sam, No along with all the characters have become friends of the reader. Of course, Lucy is the icing on the cake. Thank you L.A.Dobbs.
This is a good mystery involving Sam, Jo, and k-9 Lucy. Not only do they have a murder to solve, but there’s the on-going mystery of what happened to Jo’s little sister so many years ago. I enjoyed this mystery and the way things came together.
This is by far the best series by Lee Ann Dobbs, in my opinion. The characters are well defined and very believable. I have been anxious to have the mysteries from previous books in this series unfold. Keep this series going, please...
The Sam Mason series keeps getting better. I can’t wait for the next book to come out. Wish it were on more medias than just Kindle. I got the first ones on iBook and that’s where I do most of my reading.
Kevin is back part time and still has the thumb drive but doesn't remember why he has it or what is on it. Bridgette is recovering well and is staying with Jo. There is a murder and clues are flying everywhere and they find Tammy's killer.
I really like this series, but this latest book was a long time coming - 3 1\2 years! It was filled with murder and mystery, and how old cases can merge with new.
It took 7 books to solve the secondary mystery but a great ending. The stories have good character development. Love the dog. Looks of murder in a small town does stretch the stories.
Holy smokes Batman this books was amazing the best one in the series. Things solved but still some questions. On the edge of my seat. Page turner and the story got better and better. 10 stars for this book.
