Another thriller from the writing team that gave us ‘The Woman Who Was No More’ and ‘The Living and the Dead’, two books that gave birth to the two awesome movies ‘Les Diaboliques’ and ‘Vertigo’ . Chavane runs the restaurant car on the Paris-Nice route, working two days on and two days off. He is married, but it is a marriage that is boring and monotonous and he wants out. He leaves a letter to his wife in a book he knows she will open, but before she does, the whole story turns upside down and turns into a mystery in which he desperately tries to discover who she really is. Each clue just serves to deepen the mystery and the reader is kept guessing right up to the final chapter. If anything this is even better than the two books they are best known for in the English speaking world and yet it remains untranslated (or at least I couldn’t find an English translation anywhere). Well worth reading in the original!
