2123 was not my best year… Let me state for the record... Dying is not fun and is definitely overrated. This was the year the newly formed Galactic Coalition of Planets faced it greatest threat since the D'lralu invasion. The almost omnipotent Heshe sought to redeem themselves for past sins. The problem with this type of redemption was the price others sometimes pay for your salvation...
CKC is a pure Science Fiction series following the adventures of a future "Horatio Hornblower" style character called "Admiral 'Cat' Catherine Kimbridge" ...It's a scifi adventure series that is chock-full of real-world cutting edge science ranging from VASMR drives powered by liquid fluorine thorium reactors to entangled quantum communications. Add in a six legged cybernetic dog with a passion for chocolate and anything can happen.
I am a geek with a passion for God [I am a fulltime Presbyterian Pastor/Retired computer programmer.]
I'm an unrepentant technologist with over 25 years in the "Information Technology" field -much of it as a Senior Manager of Research and Development.
I have a wonderful wife named Lori, and two fantastic daughters... CJ and Jackie. CJ is ten years the elder and is in college (Muskingum University, New Concord Ohio).
All four of us love Science Fiction, Scuba Diving and good food. Lori and the girls share a passion for music and the piano - regrettably I have absolutely no skills in this area. I do have a passion for Notre Dame and Green Bay Packer Football.
About my writing...
My current passion is a pure Science Fiction series following the adventures of a future "Horatio Hornblower" style character called "Admiral Catherine Kimbridge". I have also co-authored a fantasy series with my eldest daughter (CJ) called "The Ways of Mages"
PLEASE NOTE: All of the proceeds from the first book in each series goes to funding food banks and homeless ministries... So enjoy an inexpensive read and know that you are helping someone else in the process!
Cat’s adventures continue and this time the Galactic Federation of Planets find themselves in a struggle for survival against an insect hive super mind with a primary directive of protection through aggression. Don’t bother trying to understand the scientific capabilities in play. Just get lost in the drama and enjoy the action. It’s over before you know it and the stage is set for Cat’s next encounter.
I like the idea of this series and I hope it keeps going on for as long as the author can. The story includes interesting relationships between human and alien characters. The alien characters were described in such detail that I could picture every creature. I loved the way the family relationships added a another level to this exciting story. Can't wait to read what's going to happen next!
I thought this was a pretty good book, a little slow for my taste, not enough action. I still find the characters interesting and wish to continue following them on their adventure. Even though I did not particularly care that much for this book I still think it’s worth reading to continue with the series.
The plot becomes confusing, drawn out battle scenes between various groups I can't identify, the poor character development means I gave it up part way through as I didn't care enough to keep reading.
Redemption is book two in the Catherine Kimbridge Chronicles, which follows the story of the genius whose name graces the series. And I use the term genius literally, not sarcastically. At times to the detriment of the narrative in the first book, making Catherine the singular hero of much of the first story.
This is where the second book excels where the first book fell short - while Catherine Kimbridge is still central to the story, she no longer is the only person contributing to solutions. Here she is still a bit too much to be real, though she no longer is the only starring character and no longer the soul hope of humanity.
Readers of the prior book will (hopefully) be pleased to see some familiar characters return to the story including Ben.
Overall, the book is an enjoyable read, though in the edition I read it still needs some editing for typos and the like. Fortunately, with Kindle editions it is possible for the author to correct these issues and push out revisions for the next read-through.
The whole "creator" deal is wearing a bit thin. That the main character is also the most accomplished scientist in the multi-species coalition, the most accomplished and formidable starship leader, and when the going gets rough is the leader of an elite covert force infiltrating a compromised battle station carrying twice the load of a six-legged cyborg. Suspension of disbelief is becoming a challenge.
I enjoyed the second book in this series. I appreciate how one of the characters keep dying and being resurrected without the theological discussion about what happens to her soul or the afterlife. This is only the second book I have read from Beery, but I plan to read more.
I enjoyed the story, but felt it was too short for my taste. I enjoy longer Sci Fy tales, but was impressed with the preceding tales about Catherine Kimbridge and the Hymenopterans!
