Xander's Chance

Rate this book
A continuation of the "War of Gods" saga ...

As the single-most powerful vampire on the planet, Xander is the ultimate bored predator with too much time on his hands. He manipulates the minds of immortals for fun and bullies around the Gods, while guarding the secret source of his power, a crystal that can wipe out the planet. But beneath the surface, he’s a shrewd creature who learned the brutal lesson of why there must be a balance between good and evil. An unwilling protector of the playthings known as humans, he knows when and where to use his power – and never to let anyone close enough to betray him. It’s easy to do, since he has the power to read the minds of everyone around him.

Except for one: Jessi, an innocent looking woman with an unusual talent who shows up unexpectedly in his life. Her sudden appearance is too convenient to be coincidence or chance. Xander determines quickly that she was sent by someone, but he can’t read her mind to discover why.

Jessi’s secret – and Xander’s – have the power to forever change the human world. Intrigued by a new sort of challenge, Xander won’t know how much danger he’s in, until he’s placed his fate in the hands of a woman whose betrayal will cost either his heart or his life.

I breathe stories. I dream them. If it were possible, I'd eat them, too. (I'm pretty sure they'd taste like cotton candy.) I can't escape them - they're everywhere! Which is why I write! I was born to bring the crazy worlds and people in my mind to life, and I love sharing them with as many people as I can.

I'm also the bestselling, award winning, internationally acclaimed author of over sixty titles and counting. I write speculative fiction in multiple subgenres of romance and fantasy, contemporary fiction, books for both teens and adults, and just about anything else I feel like writing. If I can imagine it, I can write it!

I live in the desert of southern Arizona with a pack of spoiled dogs and Tubbs, the Godfather cat who rules them all.

Note to self: when possible, check GR before requesting books.
The blurb on GoodReads tells readers that this is a spin off from another series. Unfortunately, the blurb I read didn't mention this, so I wandered among the pages of this novel without mucho understanding.

The novel is a continuation of the "War of Gods" series and it's clearly so from the many past hints you fail to get. To those, you have to add a confusing world-building (or maybe everything has been simply already explained before).

I could not understand what was an Original. Apparently the first. But if this is somewhat understandable with vampires, it gets confusing with the original human. Does it mean they are a mold to create the rest? Or the forefathers? (But then, where's the other half of the couple? There's just one human.)

Unfortunately, this is not the only problem I had with this story. Xander is an idiot, but then she's stupid, so I guess they are well-matched. I couldn't really find a reason for most of the story: why is he an actor? Why doesn't she ask for help? Or why doesn't she tell her cousins the truth? (By the way, yes, you have two jobs so you can keep them with you, but given the way all of you behave maybe they would be better off somewhere else.)
Wherever I turn I can't find a sympathetic character nor one I could appreciate. It seems the land of the rotten spoiled or the terminal stupid. (See the women parade.)
Let's say that characterization wasn't this novel's forte.

At half point to the end, I couldn't really go on. I didn't find amusing the banter between the two, and there was no tension to the story, even with the bad guy threatening her and her family.

To the fan of the "War of Gods" saga, this is a godsend, a way to keep reading on. To the rest of the readers, I can only say: go back to Damian's Oracle. You will at least get the background.

Having read all of the previous books in the War of God series, I was already a fan, but admit Xander wasn't my favorite character. He was interesting and I did want to learn more about his history given when he showed up in the series and his role. I have to say that after reading the book, I fell a little in love with him. He still isn't my favorite God, but I understand him better and respect who he is now. If it wasn't for Jessie, I don't know if he would even be redeemable, but she does bring out the better side of Xander.

For those who have not read the series, there are 5 original beings...and Xander is the Original Vampire. The book begins with Xander's origins. And you learn he wasn't always the cold-blooded killer he appears in the earlier book. He was a boy who loses his mother at 10, and is adopted and later taught to be a killer in order to save the human world. For the price of revenge against his father who kicked them out because of who he was, he loses his humanity.

Thousands of years later, he is now living in the human world as an actor of his own vampire show. He's rich, sexy, and sleeps with a different woman every night. They are also his food source, but without the killing. Jessie is a woman who is raising her teenage cousins after their parents died in a car accident. She and they are naturals. Her unique gift is that she is immune to Xander's senses...he cannot sense her nor control her mind. Jonny decides to use Jessie to steal from Xander. He threatens her cousins to get her cooperation. Fearing he will kill them, she agrees and begins to work for Xander for 1 week. The interaction between the two of them is fantastic. Although attracted to him, she is not willing to be his girl of the day. Because of how different she is, he cannot help but to fall in love with her and she him. It is great to read how she affects him and of course, his struggle to not fall like all of his other counterparts. The dialogue and his I don't give a shit attitude is hilarious. In some cases you wanted to smack him for being so arrogant, but you also had to love the jackass. The icing on the cake? Our other favorite characters are also in the story and we get introduced to the potential love interest of the Black God Jonny.

If you have not read the series (and I know some are not fans), I think the series is fun and have personally enjoyed reading it. I would recommend the series to all age groups, especially if you have a liking for paranormal romances like I do.

Please, Xander, come nibble me!

Do you have a of job that bites? I doubt you can top Jessi’s. Her employer is a moody, over-sexed playboy celebrity who is known to live far too richly in his Vampire persona. When she gets a temp job to be his personal assistant in order to fulfill a dastardly mission for some shady boyfriend of her cousin Ashley who landed her younger relation in the hospital, Jessi thinks that the weirdness in her life has hit it’s limits. Then she finds out that the world as she knows it is all but a stories told to humans because the truth is stranger than fiction. And far scarier; Xander being the scariest of it all.

A sexy Vampire, some interesting characters, a sad goodbye and a world that is pretty damn cool! This is what you will get when you read Xander's Chance! Xander the sexy first original vampire, this character is giving my Darkyn a run for his money! But Xander, *sighs…...he doesn’t have it easy, nor is he an easy guy to like at first. KEEP READING! You will love him! I know it! I mean you have to!!! He is a vampire, he is sexy, he is dominating and he…... well…he’s a vampire! lol (kidding) But seriously, Lizzy is always able to grab her readers and immerse them in her worlds so easily. I found myself gripping the tablet and not wanting to go to bed when I should. Xander, he made me laugh, made me want him! (lol) also made me go awwwww…..so you get a great mix with him. Jessie….the lead female character. I love her!! She is sassy, she is protective and she takes no crap from Xander. She also has special talents, and they are soo cool! I love that Xander can’t get to her the way he does everyone else! (READ IT!!) Their story is an interesting one and the entire time I was reading, I was smiling. The banter that goes on between these two cracks me up. I love how she drives him crazy and vice versa.

Johnny, now this guy wait till you meet him! I really do not like him in this book. But maybe in book two he can change my mind. We will see.

Recently I'd given up on all things vampire, I was bored with all the usual premises
vampire A) suave gentleman who like to dine on tasty virgins
vampie B) teen vampire torn between vampire instincts and pretty young virgin.
Yeah these vampires have been done to death, I'm so over them it's not even funny anymore.
Roll in Lizzy Ford's Xander, no excuses for his instincts and no virgins for dinner, thank you Lizzy for that. I was drawn in, then sucked in and I didn't want to get out, I loved every minute of Xanders story.
I don't know whether to class this as urban fantasy or paranormal romance. it's almost in a genre of its own. Just to warn anyone now, if you don't like fade out sex scenes you probably wont like this book. For me the tension between Jessi and Xander was hot enough I didn't miss any generic "and he growled you are mine as he slid tab A into slot B"
The plot was smart with gods and original beings, it was interesting even sometime a little to much to follow, but this is the first one of the series. I cant wait to download the rest in this series.

OMG, Funny, sexy, and lots of action. Xanders Chance allows us woo men to believe that we can tame a wild man,,,lol,,, in all seriousness, well written great amount of drama and sentiment, I loved it as well as her WAR OF THE GODS SERIES. Lizzy Ford is truly a gifted writer with a wide range of imagination that will lead her to great publications, looking forward to more of her work.

I loved this one. In fact I thought this book was better than the last three from the "War of Gods" series. Xander was a sexy and often scary character that I fell in love with. I hear there will be a book about Johnny. I cant wait.

I read this book as to complete my a-z Book challenge. To say I wasn’t really bothered about it and probably wouldn’t have bothered but there is a lack of books beginning with x.

But I read it and was actually surprised that it wasn’t terrible. I probably would read any more in this series because the characters are too egotistical for me no it was bordering on annoying!

Title: Xander's Chance
Series: Damian Eternal #1

The most powerful vampire on the planet meets his match in Jessi, a woman immune to his magick - and his charm. As the single-most powerful vampire on the planet, Xander is the ultimate bored predator with too much time on his hands. Review: Xander's Chance surprised me...the prologue caught my attention, but from chapter one on I was questioning whether or not this title was for me. It was a bit confusing between all the White God, Black God, Originals, et cetera, et cetera...however, the further the book progressed the more I enjoyed it. The series is an actual continuation on another series by Lizzie Ford - her "War of Gods" saga. I wish I had read more of her prior series before I began Xander's Chance, as I feel that it would have given a lot more insight into the world - and I would have been a bit more prepared for this one and a little less lost. I think I would also have received even more insight into Xander's character as well.
However, I have to tell you that this is one of the better done "worlds" I have read when it comes to sci-fi/paranormal romances. Once you pick up on the complexities of the world, and the important players in it, it turned out to be a really well done novel. There were some slight undertones reminiscent of Sherrilyn Kenyon, and I think anyone who has enjoyed her works might appreciate Ford's tale. To be honest, I'm surprised that I have not stumbled upon her books before! Needless to say, I plan on changing that really quick! I would definitely recommend to any sci-fi/paranormal reader - but particularly those who enjoy a complex world within the story! Keep in mind though that is promoted as having 'NO graphic sex scenes', so if you're looking for a little erotica mixed in, this book isn't really your cup of tea.

Sexy, hot, gorgeous, and 7 feet tall – What’s not to love about Xander? He’s also the oldest living vampire who wields a lot of power and can read thoughts and control minds of all; just happens to have his own cooking show (man’s gotta make a living); has a woman every single night, but doesn’t do repeats; is anal about his house being spotless; wants to be served his coffee and meals just so; and has a vamp-cat named Cat that drinks only wine. Alpha-male? Hell yes! Did I like the story? Most definitely. What made it so appealing? Jessi, and the fact that Xander can’t read her mind or even control her; not to mention she brings disarray and chaos to his life frustrating him beyond belief which makes this story even more engaging (and amusing). I thought Jessi totally rocked as she challenged Xander in every possible way. I couldn’t get enough of their banter as you didn’t know what to expect next. She also stood up for herself, didn’t put up with his crap and male-ego and isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. You can’t help but love her. Even though they both try to deny it, you can feel the heat and chemistry between them. I should mention that if you’re looking for smoldering hot, descriptive sexual escapades, there’s none of it here. Only deep kissing, holding each other naked, and waking up the next morning – it’s that tame which is too bad since the author definitely delivers a hero that leaves you with nasty, dirty thoughts…..Yum! This is the one aspect of the story that I wish the author developed a little more. So if you love paranormal-romance that’s got action, mystery and suspense, not to mention humour, I highly recommend you give this book a try; especially since Amazon has it listed for 98 cents (Kindle version). I personally can’t wait for the next installment in this new and exciting series.

So we all knew Xander was gonna be badass but we didn't know how much badass he'll be! Okay so let's get down to business Xander is a crude MOFO, "Wanna f*** a celebrity?" Hot right? Obviously subtlety isn't his strong point, and I mean really it's not his strong point, "You're not supposed to ask me questions. I can ask whatever I want in my f***ing house." Yea I know my panties well... you get the point (winks) It's good to see that Jonny hasn't changed much still an a**hole, "I hate those f***ers," Jonny muttered. "You on board, or am I eating you for dinner?" Xander he's just... crude (not complaining because on him that's dam sexy) "That's your impression of me? Warm and intimate? Like Santa Clause or some shit?" I mean the boy does have a woman in his bed like EVERY night and no it's never the same one so of course he'll be thinking with his p**is a lot I mean not that I can blame him with looks like his and all, "I can't read your mind, and you're the only woman who has been in my bedroom who I haven't f***ed. It makes sense to me." Also he's an ass man ladies which mean if ya'll have nice asses just throw yourselves at him (winks again) "You've got a nice ass," Xander said. "Real women have something back there to grab." Jessie that girl oh bless her heart isn't like the sex-crazed women he's used to she actually has a mind of her own, "You bit me, Xander! I don't want that moment immortalized, the only thing the world ever knows about me, that some sadistic man-whore with rabies bit me on the beach." I'd say these two make a perfect couple, anyone else agree with me? Honestly out of the 'Gods' series this one is my favorite that Lizzy has written to date.

I received this book in exchange for an honest unbiased review!!~~
Xander's Chance by Lizzy Ford

OMG comes to mind when thinking about this book. This is my 5th book that I have read by her and man does her writing just keep getting better and better. Her writing is like Karen Marie Moning to me! ADDICTIVE!! Holy Moly I had emotional overload while reading this book!! I loved the characters and I loved their banter back and forth. I loved how Xander is mysterious bad boy who has a hidden nice streak. Half the time I wanted to yell at Jessie and say hurry up give in give in!! I did an almost part of the nighter reading this book I just couldn't for the life of me put the thing down. AMAZING!! I was so entralled I'm having a hard time explaining it. Have to read it for yourself to understand! I'm in love and his name is Xander!! The story is well written and flowed wonderfully and there was something always happening in the book. Had a hard time sitting still.

The book starts out by giving the reader insight into how Xander came to be then goes to modern day where he is like a reluctant immortal policeman who only does something when someone messes up. I guess more like a mediator especially between the black god and white god. A secret plan is hatched and a Natural named Jessie is blackmailed into stealing something Xander holds dear. Xander is blindsided my this mortal who happens to have the ability to be stealthy and hidden from reading her mind. He takes it as a challenge. What will happen? Gotta read!!

The first book in the Damian Eternal series is a book full of intrigue, romance and gods.

Jessi is a young woman trying to raise to teens by herself and is confronted by The Black God and coerced into stealing from Xander, the original vampire. Xander lives on the fringe of the Guardians and Gods, not really wanting anything to do with them and he knows that Jessi is up to something.

The author has created a unique supernatural world full of suspense and romance with action and surprising twists. The characters are strong with a lot of depth and their personalities leap off the pages. The great storyline flows smoothly from one scene to the next thoroughly engaging the reader.

The romance builds throughout the book as Jessi fights her attraction to Xander, not only because she knows that she is going to betray him, he is all about the one night stands. The courtship of these two is enough to keep the reader entertained, but then you add in the conflict between the supernaturals and you have a highly captivating story that you can’t put down until it is finished.

This series is a continuation of the War of Gods series and can be read without reading the War of Gods series. The author supplies enough of the previous story for the reader to pick up the storyline and go forward. She provides the information without confusing the reader or detracting from Xander and Jessi’s story. Although, I if you haven’t read the War of Gods, I do recommend them and I will certainly be looking forward to reading more of Damien Eternal in the future.

First of all let me make sure you understand this book is not the first book in a series as you might think by looking at the Goodreads page. It is a spinoff of another series. A series I did not read and would highly recommend that you read before you read this book. I ended up reading reviews for the other books trying to understand who people were and what was going on but even with that I was so confused for most of the first part of the book. The reviewers who have read the other series seemed very pleased with the way things turned out in this book.

I would say I enjoyed 20% of this book. I liked the by-play between Xander and Jessie. Other than that I didn't like Jessie much. Her decisions didn't make sense to me. I was angry at her through the whole last part of the book. I didn't understand why Xander was an actor and how it really fit into the rest of everything. Yes, Xander the vampire is a famous actor. That plot actually sounds like something I'd really enjoy. Famous actor and temp assistant who doesn't know he's an actor who he cannot sense with his vamp powers. But it didn't fit with the rest of everything going on. I really wanted to like this book but other than the short courtship between Jessie and Xander I had to force myself to read.

Despite this review I do plan to read the other series because I think I would have liked this book a whole of a lot better had I read that.

I really enjoyed Xander's Chance. I loved the War of God's series and this was a spinoff. Xander is originally introduced in the second War of God's book, Damian's Assassin, as a side character. He has a larger presence in the final book, The Grey God. Xander is an original vampire and cold and merciless. Jessi is a girl with a unique ability that she doesn't know she has and it forces her into Xander's path. He is intrigued by her and develops feelings for her despite the fact that he doesn't normally have relationships or trust. I like the banter between Xander and Jessi and the fact that she isn't affected by his sex appeal the way all other women are. I like how attracted she is to him but that she fights it off at every corner. The characters are written so well together that you can't wait for them to jump into bed together. You don't have to read the War of Gods series to read Xander's chance but I would recommend it so you are familiar with some of the characters and their stories. There is sex and language so I wouldn't recommend it if that bothers you but it is a very good read.

Lizzy Ford has done it again. She has come out with an amazing book that I just couldn't put down. This book is a spin off of the War of Gods series. No you don't have to read that series to understand this book because she explains everything that you need to know. I fell in love with Xander when he appeared in the WOG series and could not wait to read this one. He is my all time favorite Lizzy Ford character.

Xander is tall, big, HOT, blunt, and doesn't take any s***. He is pretty set in his ways and you do not want to mess with him. But in the end he turns out to actually have a sweet side. AWWWW...

Jessi is a sweetheart. I love her smart ass comments and how she handles Xander. You can't help but to fall in love with her and feel for her threw out the book. She has a lot going on and a lot of choices to make.

This book is hands down my number 1 for this year. I love everything about this book and can't wait to see what Lizzy Ford comes out with next. There is so much more I want to say but I really don't want to spoil it for anyone else so you will just have to read it. :) Go grab this book. It is well worth it.

Xander’s Chance was definitely an amazing read. You will fall in love with the characters in the book especially Xander and Jessi. Xander had a hard childhood, he and his mother was cast out because of what he is. When tragedy strikes Xander is given the choice to live his life as he see fit or take revenge. What happens when someone he trusts tricks him? Jessi is struggling to take care of her cousins Brandon & Ashley. When Ashley ends up in the hospital, Jessi runs into Jonny. Jonny is determined to use Jessi to get what he wants even if he has to threaten her and her famiy. Ashley has to get close to Xander but is Xander what he really seems and is Ashley in over her head. Who can she trust when everyone seems to be testing her?
I love the chemistry between Xander and Jessi and their banter will definitely make you laugh. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read a good paranormal with romance, humor, action, suspense and mystery. However I do recommend this book to 18+. I am really looking forward to reading the next book and future books in the series.

As always Lizzy Ford deliver's an amazing story. Before this book came out I remember telling Lizzy that I hoped that Xander get his but kick by a girl (besides Sofi)...... We all knew Xander was one of the originals for the other books of the series, but we didn't know how it came about or what make him the way he is. It was great to read his beginning's and how, because of what Eden did (good or bad) he became what he is. I was also great to read how the right person can change even a "jackass" (not my words, Jessie's) like him. I love the way Lizzy gave a pick how the rest of the gang was doing....Dusty teaching Sofi to fight, Jenn's pregnancy, Darian and his love of cats and dark and sometime adolescent humor, Jule and Xander's love/hate relationship, Damian still doing what Sofi want's (Dam Oracles) and Johnny and his hormonal disorder...LOL. I absolutely love the book, I love the entire series and I cannot wait to see what the Dark God will do when he finally meet the woman who will probably bring him to his knees....LIZZY YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!

Lizzy Ford is one terrific author. She wrote some of my favorite books, but she mills out one a month, if not more, and unfortunately this seems to be sometimes detrimental to content and quality.

I personally prefer books with more plot twists and thought process, but once in a while I'll give in to the guilty pleasure of reading one of her romances. They all have the same plot (no spoilers! I promise ;) ). A God like (if not literally a god) mysterious male and an unsuspecting woman destined to be together. The books are just an exploration of how that's going to happen against all odds.

I like her sense humor and in some of her books she's able to create a romantic tension that will make me burn through the pages. Nonetheless I'm starting to feel that plot is way too trite, the males are becoming taller and bulgier beyond ridiculous and she ran out of expedients.

I did read through the book and if you've never read Lizzy Ford go for it, but it does not hold a candle to the first books in this neverending saga.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest Review.
I did not read the War of God Series before this book
(I actually didn't know until I finished the book that it was relate to the series)
and YOU DO NOT NEED to read anything else before this book.
I was hooked on page 2 (and it takes a lot to hook me especially on page 2).
I couldn't put the book down; if I didn't actually have to sleep I would have read it in 1 day.
This is a quick pace book with lots of action.
I LOVE the interactions between Xander and Jessie the sexual tension is killer but the best part is the way Jessie is.
She the opposite of what Xander’s is use too and he is both intrigued and frustrated with her.
Jessie doesn't know what to make out of Xander,
she has a job to do to keep the people she love safe but the more time she spend with Xander the more she realize that maybe there is more to him than what everyone else thinks.
I definitely recommend this book!!!

I recently said that Dusty and Bianca were my favorite couple but after re reading I change my mind. I forgot how funny Xander is with Jessie. Jessie is feisty and hardcore. I love her. She is probably the best female of Lizzy's. Lizzy can write some great female characters and all of them have been fantastic but there is something about Jessie that I love more.
The characters and story work so well. I love the way they fight each other but really just need to face the facts. I loved all the other characters in it as well that they were concerned for Jessie when they didn't need to be.
I loved the cousins as well even though they were normal teens and really needed to give Jessie a break. I loved this book and had to keep reading even though I had already read it I had to keep reading it to get to those favorite parts.
I can't wait to see what else happens in the last book the Black God. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Another great success by Lizzy Ford!
It was wonderful to continue hearing more about the various characters we've already come to love, but I was happy that they weren't a big focus. A very nice touch was the author giving a one sentence reminder of each character from the other books, so we weren't totally lost if we'd not read the other books in a while. It was tastefully done, not taking away from the story at all.

Xander is a much more complex character then we got to know from the past books. I loved getting to read more about him and to know the back story. Jessi was such a spunky fit to him and I thought the back-and-forth chemisty between them was very well written.

The storyline was thorough; I'm not left with any unanswered questions regarding Xander and Jessi, though there is definitely room for further story development.

I received this book as an ARC a couple of days ago. Today, I spent my Sunday taking in the entire book. I cannot say enough about Lizzy Ford's writing with this God's series. I have a few more I have to read, but have loved every one. I love the story lines. This was great in that you did not have to read all the other books prior to be able to make sense of it. If you love back and forth banter between potential mates, you will enjoy this book. I do wish that there was a little more depth in the love scenes that do exist though. We get the initial grab, miss the middle and then get the hindsight version. Thank you Lizzy for another great book and I am certainly going to be reading all of your books in the future.

I tore through this book and couldn't put it down! I am a known contemporary vampire romance lover, so me enjoying this book wasn't much of a shock, however, this one blew me away! Having read the War of the Gods series, I wasn't really that interested in Xander's story. He came off aggressive and as a generally "bad guy" in all the books. This book, however, was a great look inside his head. The story and characters sucked me in and had me on the edge of my seat the entire way. Usually when a book has the typical romance with secrets storyline I get turned off and have a hard time forcing myself through, but this whole story really sucked me in. I can't say enough good things about it, but a 5 star from me means I would re-read the book again and again.

Loved Xander's story. From the other War of Gods books, you always know there is more to Xander than he shows us and we finally get to learn what that is. Loved the witty banter between Xander and Jessi. It was also nice to see that Jonny is growing into this role - poor kid :) This book had a slightly different writing style than what Lizzy Ford usually puts out but she did an excellent job. She really captured the characters' personalities in the writing, even some of the more minor characters, and the storyline was consistent. Highly recommend this one although the War of Gods novels should probably be read first so you have all the backstory.

First book in the War of Gods spin off series by Lizzy Ford, Xander's Chance was great! I have been interested in learning more about Xander since he was introduced in the War of Gods series. Never really had a bad guy or good guy vibe from him, he had more of a Switzerland feel to him. In this book, Ms. Ford truly delivers! We learn so much about Xander and his past and why he is the way he is. We get to see him grow so much! I love the character of Jessie who is introduced in this book, she really gives Xander a run for his money! Lots of action and some heat in it as well. The story was well told and kept my interest from front to back. Looking forward to more in the future!

Received a copy of this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

From start to finish I was absolutely hooked on this book. Lizzy has a way of pulling you into the worlds and characters that she creates. You fall in love with them and find it impossible to leave.

I have always had a soft spot for Xander in the War of Gods series, and I knew there was more to him than meets the eye. This book gives you a peak behind the scenes of what makes him Xander and in my eyes is incredible. The storyline with Xander and Jessi is both comical and extremely hot.

I definitely recommend this book, and I know you will love it. :)

I have read the other 4 stories in the War of the Gods series and though I loved all the characters and felt I had found a favorite among the first four I was surprised with this story and how I came to adore the character of Xander. A complete monster with a hidden vulnerability that just appeals to the reader loking for a hot, complex man with a warm gooey center. The most of the previous characters were included to bring a full-circle to the plot and made the arrival of new characters more enticing and hopeful of more stories to come. I personally find this one to be my favorite of the 5 books...so far...

Lizzy Ford really rocks it. She's done it again in Xander's Chance. Xander is a vampire. He's not quit bad nor quite not good. He follows his own agenda. That is until the Black God, the baddies, set up a diabolical plan to force him to their side against the White and Grey God. The instrument of their plan, Jessie, is forced to work for Xander as his personal assistant. Xander realizes she wants something from him and teases her relentlessly. She's the only person he can't read and she isn't enamored by him. She doesn't recognize him for the star that he is. This goes on until Jessie begins to like him and tries to foil the plan after the goof gods rescue her niece and nephew.
