Robert Lawrence Stine known as R. L. Stine and Jovial Bob Stine, is an American novelist and writer, well known for targeting younger audiences. Stine, who is often called the Stephen King of children's literature, is the author of dozens of popular horror fiction novellas, including the books in the Goosebumps, Rotten School, Mostly Ghostly, The Nightmare Room and Fear Street series.

Luego de habernos pasado todo Septiembre/Octubre haciendo bromas en referencia al título con mi pareja, prometí que iba a leer esta novela antes de fin de año para entender a qué apuntaba la misma. No me pueden negar que es un nombre curioso para un libro (aunque de RL Stine no me sorprende mucho, a decir verdad). Lo cierto es que el título cobra sentido recién al final del libro, a diferencia de los otros libros de Stine, y que esperaba otro tipo de historia. Pero no me disgustó en lo absoluto, por lo contrario, yo creo que es ingeniosa, y sigue lo que yo denomino "la fórmula de RL Stine", la cual incluye la aparición de una hermana molesta, y un objeto ordinario y cotidiano que desencadena una situación bizarrísima, que se resuelve con la misma simpleza con la que se origina.

Muy entretenido! Al es un chico que tiene una hermana muy inteligente y es la número uno de su clase. A diferencia de ella, él prefiere disfrutar de la vida al aire libre y sin preocupaciones. Sus padres, obsesionados con que su hijo sea igual que su hermana, le regalan en su cumpleaños un juego de química. Pero Al y su mejor amigo querran hacerle una broma creando una bomba fetida, pero el experimento no resulta como ellos imaginaban. Me divertí mucho con esta historia, se lee de una sentada y nos hará reír y asustarnos a la vez.

This book is what you get when you cross Monster Blood with Brain Juice.

I liked the first half and then it kind of fizzled out towards the end. There wasn't enough conflict or high enough stakes for me; although I did sorta like the "effects" of the ooze, it wasn't at all what I was expecting and it felt somewhat unique.

It was okay, overall. 2.5⭐

A quick paced science fiction tale that unexpectedly angles hard into humor that hits so well that this story may as well be labeled a comedy. Not all of the jokes and setups payoff on the same level, but overall it sticks the landing as one of the outright funniest tales to come out of R. L. Stine, even if it does border on silly at times.

The Ooze fits somewhere between the general block of Fear Street teen oriented stories and the bulk of the kid/preteen angled Goosebumps stories. The writing leans into longer sentences and paragraphs with a bit more density to each chapter, but it maintains that quick snappy dialogue and banter that is so prevalent in Goosebumps.

The pacing starts out fairly slow but ramps up so well that by the second half of the book it feels like you are simply flying through the pages. The characters all have very distinct voices and personalities that help them stand apart from one another quite well. The premise is ludicrous and feels like the reveal comes out of left-field, but it's R.L. Stine. You shouldn't come into this expecting it to all make sense and have no plot holes.

The back blurb doesn't really match up with what happens in the story, but that's hardly worth a criticism. This fits perfectly into the Goosebumps zone of zany and creepy scenario that takes you on a wild and silly ride to a rapid climax which ends on a bit of a spicy twist at the end, just like the majority of Stine's work. And it's hilarious.

Pretty much lives up to that awesome cover. Immediately, I wanna say that the Ooze itself was a great threat. I found it to be genuinely terrifying when it transforms, so to say. The idea of what the ooze does to you is very unique and resulted in some really funny moments in the book, like a certain science bowl scene. And also, relating to this, there are intentional errors in writing, like the character saying there were four of something that got affected by the ooze when, truly, there were five (real example). The characters are genuinely so fucking hatable that they’re ironically enjoyable—specifically referring to those awful parents and the sister, Michelle. The book is really fun and has a good mystery revolving around the ooze, but it has some small issues. The explanation of how that note got to the chemistry set (this happens in the first pages, kiss my ass) was really half-assed and sudden. The parents, though are hilariously terrible people, have some scenes that piss me off. Also, the lunch scene was forced as shit. No kids are that unbelievably childish in sixth grade. An 8/10, I absolutely recommend this; It’s worth your time.

Siempre voy a repetirlo, cualquier libro de R.L. Stine es como la aspirina a un dolor de cabeza, cada vez que siento que no avanzo con algún libro que me está llevando mucho tiempo terminar por diferentes motivos, agarro un librito de Fantasmas de Fear Street o cualquiera que encuentre de él. Esta historia me ha resultado bastante divertida, ya que seguimos a nuestro personaje Al, el cual es muy inteligente así como también si hermana Michelle, un día el chico decide hacerle una broma a la adolescente. Una bomba fétida con realizada con un juego de química que le regalaron por su cumpleaños. Pero ese fango anaranjado pronto se tornada una amenaza para todos. Muy divertido

As the theme of this book goes, this is dumb but it's amusing.
I wish the conflict or more developed stakes about the titular ooze has more presence rather than it's brief confrontation in the end, instead we focus more on the reverse Brain Juice subplot which is just fine enough, I wanna give points for that for being funny at times.
And the climax was actually fun.

This was a fun book that sort of reminded me of Monster Blood from the original Goosebumps series. It wasn’t really spooky but had some intense moments.

Einfache Sprache, einfache Handlung… nicht vorhandener Spannungsbogen.
Ich schätze, ich bin einfach nicht mehr die Zielgruppe für diese Bücher. Ich musste diese Leiche aber einfach mal von meinem SuB befreien. Die Fear Street-Reihe des Autors gefällt mir dagegen schon etwas besser.

I remember loving this book as a kid but I couldn’t recall very much about the story as an adult so it was almost like reading it for the first time. The irony in this story is fantastic.

I really enjoyed the humor in this one, especially when it came to Al and his sister as they insulted one another. I thought the family and friend relationships were well defined for a book of this size as well.

Stine also did a fantastic job showing the character’s decline throughout the book, as well as the tension and conflicts that would create. Around the halfway mark I started remembering the climax but it was still satisfying and I can’t think of a better one for this story.

The overall ending was a bit corny but still overall enjoyable and satisfying. This was a fun re-read! 4.5 stars!
