2.75 stars. I was expecting a friends to lovers romance. In a general sense, this was that, absent any romantic chemistry or loving interaction between the protagonists. The hero, Ivan Lance had been taken in by the Kirkland family and treated like a son by Olivia Kirkland's parents. Ivan is 5 or 6 years older than Olivia and has regarded her as a sister until now when he sees her as a 22 year old woman; but unlike Ivan, Olivia has had a crush on Ivan since her early teens and is determined to have him notice her as a woman who he can love. Ivan's relationship with Mr. & Mrs. Kirkland and his military deployments and an intermittent physical relationship with a local woman have served as deterrents to Ivan's acting on his attraction to Olivia. There is no development of these two as a couple; but one night after escaping a rape attempt, Olivia goes to Ivan's house for solace and to render her virginity to him. He leaves for a mission and their "relationship" is still a toss up. After recovering from an injury while on this mission, he returns home and rescues Olivia from the earlier perpetrator and they vow to love each other for ever and ever. Weird. The narration by Pepper Laramie was okay.

Pretty good read. The characters were okay. I skipped to chapter 7 not so hot and steamy as I thought it would be.

Ms. Burke is definitely a writer with a great deal of potential. If she were to fill out her characters the way she does her sex scenes her stories would take on a new depth. Admittedly Ms. Burke did a better job then in previous books at showing instead of telling but this story still needs work. A start would be balancing the characters inner thoughts with dialogue and actions that way there won't be so much redundancy in the language because were constantly being told who a character is. How many times are you going to tell us that Ivan is a marine and a hero. Marine is in the title of the book, is one of the reasons for reading it. I got that he's a marine, lets move on to something a little deeper about who he is as a person. As to Olivia, we know very little about her with the exception of how it pertains to her relationship with Ivan. The scene with the attacker was a bit much and completely useless to the stories plot progression. I get what Ms. Burke was trying for, but, what it did was bring up concerns of PTSD among other things.

I didn't really like this story. This is an interracial white American man slash balck American woman. I usually like these stories. But this one lacked serious chemistry between these two protagonists. There was no toe curling chemistry that justified the emotional sort of wreck that happened here. She at times seems so mature for her twenties that you want to cheer her up. But at other times she reverts to a teenage moment and you say what the heck. What did I just witness? I mean come on if you are going to confess to having serious feelings and emotions like that there is no need to act childish. He also seems at times really caught up on her age. Yet when he becomes tested he proceeds as a typical man goes on ahead and proceeds with the sex. Why does he insist and yet gives in to temptation? He was supposed to have more character. I didn't see it. Actually I didn't see it at all with both of them.

IVAN & OLIVIA BEEN IN LOVE THEN LUST SINCE SHE WAS A TEENAGER BUT IVAN BEING SO CLOSE AND LIKE A BROTHER HE REFUSED TO GIVE INTO THEIR FEELINGS. THE STORYLINE WAS NOT VERY MUCH AND THE DIALOG IN THE LOVE SCENES A BIT UNBELIEVABLE. THIS IS A SHORT READ STORY LINE MIGHT HAVE BEEN KINDA WEAK AND A LITTLE BIT CORNY BUT THE LOVE SCENES WOW! THIS WAS A RIP-ROARIN’-F*CK-FEST FUR-SHUR! ;D

I really enjoyed this work. Ivan and Olivia were both likable. This book was well written and quite steamy. Worth the read!
