When your nightmares become reality and you can’t wake up, what do you do?
Celeste is a normal teenage girl. After the loss of her father her life seems to be in constant turmoil. She realizes her worst nightmares are occurring while she's still awake.
Just as it looks like her life is on the right path; things go terribly wrong and leave her in a spiraling whirlwind of emotion.
Trying to find her father’s killer and dealing with an ex that will do anything to get revenge; she feels like she is falling.
The only thing that is holding her together is her support system; her friends and Danny.
Celeste loves Danny more than life itself, although now is just not the time to be with him. He is the answer to her dreams, he is her one true love, and most importantly, her hope.
Only life isn't fair and doesn't play by the rules.
I was born in Jackson, MI but now live on Long Island in NY. I have four beautiful daughters whom I live and breathe for. I began writing as a hobby, but realized very quickly that it was an outlet to explore my deepest dreams. I love to read and have a problem with honesty when I write reviews, although I do not have a problem if you tell me I'm wrong about it. My debut novel is “Sudden Hope” and will be released in April of 2013. Welcome to my reality and I hope all your dreams come true
I usually only read paranormal romances and the like. But I actually enjoyed reading Sudden Hope. I felt like a teenager again, as though I was seeing and speaking from said teenagers mind. This book is nothing like the fantasies I like to read. But instead has real life issues and dramas put into a fiction setting. The heart of a teenager is a confusing thing and we follow that as Celeste takes us through her drama filled days as she discovers love, heartbreak and betrayal. She finds out where her heart belongs, and also how it fills to break a heart. But the biggest of all is rectifying a horrible tragedy though it leaves you with a wanting to follow at the end. I read this book more than three times, and have gotten a different feeling from it everytime. This book is a good read for teenagers, as most could relate to it. I give it three stars only because I do not relate.
This is this first book from this author that I gladly picked up and read. The feelings are overwhelming as I went thru this story and read her words. There was so much abuse from her mother and her stepfather. The love she carries is thru her best friend Jenny and the one she is meant to love, Danny. But will other obstacles in life keep her from loving the ones around her as others cause her more pain? Will she pull away from those close to her just so she can feel she’s protecting them from harm? Great work Ms. Garland and I look forward to reading more of your work.
Amazing story. You really have to feel for CC poor girl can't catch a break. I can't wait to read what else Mira has in store for us. Highly Recommended!
The main focus in Sudden Hope is how one girl lives her some-what normal life, attending school, hanging with her friends and doing what normal teenagers do. Celeste (or CC as she is known to her friends) is how I imagine a 17 year old girl to be; she has all the drama of boys, parties and school. She is a popular girl and is as focused as she can be on her final year of school. She has a tight group of friends and they have been like that for as long as she can remember. I really liked her character, trying to always be the good girl and to keep out of trouble. She is very compassionate and cares deeply for those who are close to her, including the bubbly Ms Gina!
CC has crushed on her friend Danny since they were little kids but has never acted on those feelings as he seems to be happy to just be her rock, the one person she can turn to when she needs that steady person in her life. He has supported her through everything, the death of her father, her mother and creepy husband moving in and also her break up with her ex. Danny is a good guy, but I thought he was a bit impatient which seemed a little out of character for him. It felt like he has sat on the sidelines for so long and now that he is focused on what he wants, he doesn’t have the patience to ride it out and seems willing to throw it all away. He is very supportive of CC, and does his best to be there for her, but there is only so much he can handle.
The underlying storyline is what ties the whole book together and that is the death of CC’s father. It starts in the Prologue and pops up throughout the story and I was hoping that we would find out the details by the end. The death of her father has shaped Celeste to be the girl that she is and she needs that closure. She relives some horrible moments and has awful nightmares, but each day she is willing to get up and move on. She has no real support at home, but she gets by with the help of her friends. I was often on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen. And the friends that she has are just awesome!! They gave great depth to the story and I loved how tight they all were.
The story is told from a 17yo girl’s POV who lives in NY and attends public school and the author stuck to that writing style. How CC reacted and how she approached the dramas in her life, is how I could imagine a 17yo to behave. The author is very descriptive in regards to surroundings, but was not over the top as not every teenager would take in too much detail about her surroundings. I found the whole book to be one massive rollercoaster of emotion and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride!!
What a great first book from author Mira Garland. Sudden Hope flows from the first page and it takes you on a ride into CC's world. Her father was killed in a senseless robbery which leaves 17 year old CC to have to deal with the alcoholic mother she hasn't seen in years. CC is just waiting out the time when she can legally kick her mother and step-father out of her house.
CC has a tight group of friends to support her. Chris has been in love with her for years but Danny is the guy of her dreams. Jenny her best friend is a firecracker with red hair and a black belt. Anthony and Lea are the couple in the group who have been dating for years. The six are tight and with all CC has to go through it is a good thing.
Ms. Garland has a way of writing the characters so we feel ingrained into their lives and care about what happens to each of them. I found myself laughing and crying along with them. I highly recommend this book. 4 1/2 Stars
CC has been raised by her father, but at the age of 17 he is murdered. Her mother and stepfather move into the house and take over. Their partying and drinking is a drain on CC and she is just waiting out her 18th birthday so she can show them the door.
She has some amazing friends that stick by her through everything! She has love issues, Chris loves her but she just wants to be friends. She loves Danny and he just wants to be friends.
Every time CC tries to keep things running smoothly, something happens to throw a wrench in the situation.
Fast moving and captivating! Great read! Lots of teen drama.
This is a wonderful, beautiful, heart wrenching read. I love the relationship Celeste and Jenny have. Poor Celeste has been going through hell since her dad died. This story has so many twists and turns it will leave you head spinning..It will also have you crying at the end. I loved this book and can not wait to read more of Mira's work..She is truly a talented person and I just love her to pieces. I highly recommend this book to everyone...This is a MUST READ!!!!!!!
This was an intense book. I had trouble putting it down. Poor CC/Celeste’s life is in constant turmoil. Luckily she has several friends that stick by her no matter what happens. It’s difficult to talk about my favorite parts of this book and things that surprised me, without spoiling it. All I can say is, I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next installment!
OMG!!!!!!!!!! What can I say about this book!! Mostly this author is not only a terrific writer but a personal friend of mine and I am proud to know she has written a book where YA can read it and not have to cover their eyes. Wtg my friend
A very intense yet satisfying read. A book unlike any other leaving you wanting more. A wonderful book cant wait for book two. A must read for all. A great author and great series.
C.C. is your typical American teenager, with your typical American teenager problems. A friend who's a boy who'd like to be her boyfriend. A friend who's a boy who'd SHE'D like to be her boyfriend. An ex-boyfriend who'd like her back … as a possession. A mother who has introduced a questionable stepfather and their questionable friends into their house. A father whose murder is as yet unsolved …
OK, maybe C.C.'s problems are NOT those of your typical American teenager. In her first novel, “Sudden Hope”, Mira Garland tells the story of C.C. and her friends. Seniors in High School, their ability to move on to the next phase of their lives is complicated by the unknowns in the current phase of their lives.
Ms. Garland manages to tell a tale in which the next chapter is NOT predictable. A coming-of-age story of one young lady, coupled with some pretty intense dramatic events – and a bit of a murder mystery, to boot.
Like so many YA novels, Ms. Garland's prose suffers a little from what I refer to as “I” disease – first person narration where the word “I” is used too often, especially at the beginning of a sentence. “I woke up. I ate Corn Flakes. I washed my bowl ...” In this reviewer's opinion, the best first person narration is when the “first person” describes events around them while interspersing their own opinions and feelings into the mix. While not spot-on, Ms. Garland comes closer to this vision than most other YA authors. (ASIDE: It could also be that, since I am NOT the traditional market to which YA novels are aimed that my opinions on the topic hold little water.)
The book concludes with all of the loose ends nicely tied up. And drops at least one potential hanging thread that could springboard Ms. Garland's second book. I, for one, look forward to it.
I'd like to give the book 5 stars – its characters and plot will stay with me long after I put the book aside. However, there are enough small nitpicks for me to settle on 4 ½ stars, rounded down to 4 where ½ stars are not permitted.
DISCLOSURE: I received a copy of this book free of charge as a gift from the author without obligation, although a review was hinted about after I received the copy.
There are very few books that I find I wish I had never read, but this one is surely one of them. Rather than waste my time complaining about the headache, I'll just sum it up to a list of pros and cons.
PROS - Teen sex isn't the focus of the story. - CC gets her happily ever after.
CONS - There are numerous spelling, tense, and grammatical errors. Barely readable is an understatement. - The characters lack personality. It would be easier to describe them as bipolar children with elementary-level speech patterns stuffed into the bodies of teenagers and cloned. All of the characters are one-dimensional copies of each other. - The story is absolutely unrealistic. Every boy the protagonist knows has issues with anger, passive aggression, and the desire to own her. She loses her father, is abused, is cheated on, mugged, nearly raped, finds out her best friend is dating her attacker, and later finds she is living with her father's murderers. One of her friends ends up in a coma after nearly dying, but gets out of the hospital with no broken bones after four days. And she is her employer's sole beneficiary upon death, leaving her a car, a house and tons of money on top of the car and house her father leaves her. All of this in less than a year. - The pacing is extremely rushed. It's just a constant roller coaster ride that tries too hard to be happy for one paragraph and then tries too hard to be sad the next.
There is so much more wrong with this book that I can't be bothered to go into. Save yourself the money and the disappointment. After all the good reviews and hype surrounding this train wreck, I expected so much more. I think the worst part of this book is the lack of reviews that tell it like it is. There is no way I am the only one that managed to see all that is wrong with this story.

Sudden Hope is the debut novel by Mira Garland and it is a wonderful YA contemporary novel. It focuses on Celeste (or C.C. as she's called by her friends) and the issues that she's dealing with. Celeste is dealing with typical high school romance issues - a boy who wants to be her boyfriend, a best friend that she wants to be more than a friend, and an ex-boyfriend who wants her back. But Celeste is also dealing with some tougher issues - her father is murdered which means that her mother and her loser boyfriend move into the house with Celeste until she can kick them out when she turns 18. The plot of this story moved quickly and flowed smoothly. The story was unique and had a lot of twists and turns that kept you reading to see what happened next. There was action and suspense, and also romance. There was also a focus on friendship and how friends can help you through anything. The characters in the story were very relatable and likeable. Celeste was a wonderful protagonist and I rooted for her throughout the whole book. Jenny, Celeste's best friend, was a firecracker and was so full of life. She brought a lot of energy to every scene she was in and some of her comments and actions made me laugh out loud.Chris and Danny were the 2 boys in the love triangle with Celeste and it was easy to see how much she cared for both of them but in totally different ways. I had one issue with the book and that was the editing. There were a few grammatical and spelling errors in the book. For example "of coarse" instead of "of course". A good editor could really help this book to shine. Overall, I really enjoyed Sudden Hope and I'm looking forward to reading other books by Mira Garland.
I had the pleasure of beta reading Mira Garland's novel Sudden Hope. This YA romance follows 17 year old CC in her normal, yet drama filled life. CC has a close knit group of friends who keep her grounded after her father's murder. CC has always had feelings for her friend Danny and now learns he feels the same for her. It seems like the cards are always stacked agaist her as one drama filled event occurs after another.
I had a lot of trouble getting into this book. After a while I realized it was the language of the characters. They were 17 but talked like awkward adults. There seemed to be a total lack of contractions being used throughout the book. People don't talk like that. 17 year olds really don't talk like that. So not only the way they talked but also that maturity of their conversations did not feel like late teens. This might have been more realistic had the characters been college age. I also felt the characters were quite scattered, esp Danny. And if that boy cried one more time, I was gonna scream!
Also, the amount of drama - lordy! This poor girl! Every time she turned around there was some twist, some turmoil. By the time I reached the near end I remember reading yet another drama filled moment and thinking "Oh come on, really?!?" It just felt like it was too much. Rather than being focused on a few major events / climax, there were multiple kinda smaller ones again and again.
Does the author have potential? Oh yes! Language & characters will develop as she developes as a writer & I can't wait to see what's next for her.
This story is so much more than one of a senior in high school. This is about the twists and turns that come with it, survival, love, despair and yes... Hope.Celeste's story will make you feel everything in it and more, feelings you didn't expect. You'll root for her, cry with her and fear for her.
Celeste, 17 years old has gone through more than any teenager should, any adult should. She loses the one person that means the most to her; her father. Unexpectedly has his life taken from him, a ring stolen, a innocent bystander in the right place at the wrong time.
If not for her friends, (reminds me of the brat pack), Celeste "CC" may not have made it through the circumstances, her fears, nightmares and worst of all the betrayal from none other than her mother. After her father is taken from her, Celeste's mother re-marries, the step father from hell. Night after night she fears the worst, what will happen and her mother is of no help. The one person she loves and wants to be with, doesn't feel the same about her, or does he? One day she learns the truth, the answer to the question that has nagged her. The 2 people responsible are finally revealed. How could she have missed the signs, what was right in front of her all his time.
Finally, the day she turns 18, a day for celebration.. Can it go off without a hitch? What will she do if one of her friends calls upon her? Read on and find out those answers and more.
Sudden Hope by Mira Garland is a wonderful story about Celeste (CC to all her friends). It seems the odds are stacked against CC no matter how hard she tries, it seems nothing but bad things happen to her. Her father was murdered and the police can't find the person who did this. CC's mother and her low life boyfriend have to move into the house that was left to CC by her father, but she is only 17 and she can't wait till she's 18 to kick them out of the house!
CC has a wonderful group of friends who are always there for her no matter what time and no matter what has happened. She is pulled between two of her guy friends. She loves one more than a friend and the other one only as a friend and CC has some trouble trying to please both of these guys. But CC learns you need to follow your heart and honesty wins out above all else.
This story has friendship, love, suspense, and Karma makes an appearance throughout the book. I recommend reading this book but be prepared to not wanting to put this one down. I cried, laughed and realized with the right friends around you, you can survive anything.
Sudden Hope by Mira Garland 4.5 stars I started this book prior to going to bed, never expecting that I would not be able to put it down until I had completed it! CC has a tumultuous year. Her father dies and leaves her the house, but being only 17 she has no choice but to allow her alcoholic, drugged out mom and step-dad live with her until she can turn 18 and kick them out. She has very close friends (thank goodness) and they are supportive of her. The parents of these friends also appear to be supportive of her. I can see myself wanting to help her. Jenny is her best friend with fire red hair and a kick ass black belt. Lea is in a relationship with Anthony. This leaves Chris and Danny. Whatever is a girl to do with two very eligible males there to help her? I enjoyed the way Mira built the characters and their relationships. She dangled a teaser for the next book and I am now stalking her until its release.
WOW! Just wow! I gave this book 5 stars because I couldn't give it the 15 it deserves. This is the first book in a very long time that I have read in one sitting, and when it ended my first reaction was to beg the author for a sequel. This book is written from the point-of-view if CC, a 17 year old girl who has gone through one of the worst things possible; the loss of a parent. When her father was murdered, CC was left to live with her abusive mother and step-father who were intent on making her life terrible. She is put through more than most people can fathom, but with the help of her amazing group if friends makes it through. I identified with the character and spent a great deal of time sobbing with her. If you love a good read that draws you in and refuses to let you go even once it ends this is it. Mira did an amazing job and.wrote what in my opinion is the perfect story.
I wasn't prepared to be dragged back to the reverberating, high decibel, jostling, shoving, irritating halls of High School. I never expected to have my nose jammed full of that cloying stench that only exists in school lockers and comes from forgotten lunches, rotting text books, a book bag someone left, dirty socks and the dead body hidden in someones locker.
Mira Garland didn't have to describe that gut churning arena - - she drags you through it focused on the teenage angst and hormone imbalance of friends, frienemies, and a social circle of teens. Her words are simple as the days they are placed in; but carry all the weight that drags at the soul of being a teen.
This is a great read. But like surviving high school, you're glad for your life as you reach the other end. This a powerful start to a writer's career.
Mira Garland’s Sudden Hope is one of those books that make you root for the protagonist through every page. This is about an ordinary teenager’s extraordinary journey to find her father’s killer fighting on the way with a vengeful ex, her mother who has a good- for- nothing boyfriend. However, helping through this all is her friends and her special friend Danny- her sudden hope. Ms. Garland has done a wonderful job bringing to life all her characters in this novel. You cry for Celeste (CC), feel loved with her and fall in love with her too! Even you can find yourself to be any of her friends- Jenny, Anthony, Lea and even Danny. Paranormal romance is a tough genre, but the author has done full justice to it. This was just not another teenage locker room story and would stay with you for a long time.
I never read these sorts of books, but the cover did it for me, so I thought I'll give it a try. Not knowing that the story was so awesome!! Normally I read fantasy, horror and ya paranomal books. So this was a huge thing for me.
I loved this book so much, I needed to stop 3 times to cry, and yes I did. And that's a very good sign believe me.
I'm not a YA or teenager anymore, I'm a real grown up woman lol But I still can fall in love with Danny, ooowwww yes I can.
One more thing, the end? Is there going to be a book 2? If not, why not?
You know (baby) ???
Thanks a lot for giving me such a great time reading this great book.
I received this book for an honest review in. Exchanged.
Wow I love this book. It drew me in on page one. Celeste known as CC she had experience an tragedy. She then was living with her drunk mother and her boyfriend. Oh I hated him. She had a great circle of friends. Things got complicated, things happened to her. I love how strong CC was. It proves that anyone could make it thru the hardest thing!! And CC went thru stuff that was heart breaking Don't want to give alot away. There was even a mystery that got solved at the end. I recommend this book. You all have to read this amazing book!!!
"Sudden Hope (Hope Series)" by Mira Garland is a beautiful and dramatic teenage story about a young girl forced to live with her uncaring mother and the dangerous boyfriend that came with her. Following her father's death Celeste needs to wait until her 18th birthday before his house will fall to her alone. Until then her mother unfortunately is dragged back into her life as guardian and makes living very uncomfortable. Fortunately Celeste has a great network of friends and a beautiful love story to experience which helps her stay on her way and come through the ordeals thrown at her. Truly a tribute to hope this is a great read for teenagers and young adults.
This was an amazing book i could not set it down...You have a 17 year old girl named CC and her life has basically crumbling under her. Her father was murdered and the cops can not find out who did it, then her romance life takes a turn for the better then worse. She just can not catch a break. If it was not for her friends she would not be able to hold herself together. Will the cops ever find out who killed her father? How long can she keep herself together?
Be prepared to read this book in one sitting. I absolutely loved it and read it all the way through the night. I could not put it down. I can not wait to read more by this author. Her characters were very detailed connecting me to one of the characters. She has done a magnificent job and I highly recommend this book to everyone. The best part is how true this book can relate to a real life event and that it can happen! Very great work and I would love to own a signed copy one day by this author!!
I have been out of high school for over 3 decades but author Mira Garland brought me back in time with ease. This exciting story is through the eyes of CC, one of 6 close friends. She goes through the feelings that most teenagers go through. Feelings of love, hate and betrayal and how each is dealt with. This happens in homelife and within the close knit circle of 6 friends of 3 boys and 3 girls. Mira's descriptions of places and things are perfect. Not to short or to long. This book kept my attention all through it.
Well, first, I would recommend this book to someone between the ages of 14-18 as a "coming of age" book. I think I came across a LOT of grammatical errors that could have been fixed though, not to mention... present tense *shudders* (sorry, just not my thing as writing in present tense makes things come across as choppy to me).
As far as the plot, I think it was good (I won't go into a lot of details due to not wanting to spoil it for anyone), but yeah... I think it also needs... something more.
CC is a young lady who has suffered and continues to suffer in her young life. After the first years of her life being hated and abused by her mother, her father witness the horror and gives her a wonderful childhood. The unthinkable happens and she is brought back into a horrible life.
CC has absolute wonderful friends who support and love her. One who has secretly loved her for years..
An extremely intense and well written book. Celeste is a normal and happy teenage girl until the death of her father and then her world begins a downward spiral. C.C. is surrounded by a group of friends she knows she can depend on. Throughout all of the violence and pain and emotional turmoil she holds on to that truth to keep her going. The book flowed so well making it a smooth read. There was intense emotion and plenty of action. A great read.
