I honestly can't remember when I last hated a character more than the lead female in this book, Sophia. She is supposed to be in her 20's, but has the maturity of a 12 year old throwing a temper tantrum for 300 pages. I seriously wanted her to get killed by the vampires, humans, or lycans and was actively rooting for the bad guys anytime they came into play.

Anyone? I'll pay you...

Sophia is a part of a ridiculous and bigoted group that has set its sights on killing vampires. She thinks she's a badass, but she isn't. She thinks she's smart, but she isn't. She thinks her kind are better than the supernatural species, but they aren't. She's so wrong in every way, shape, and form that it is almost funny. Except it's not. It's annoying.

if no one else is going to do it, please let me!

When our hero, Jask, who has the unfortunate task of being her love-interest in this book, calls her out on her irritating behavior:

Sophia: "Why, because I stand up to you? Because I'm not afraid to say what I think?"

Jask: "You say that with pride. Honey, five-year-olds say what they think. Knowing what to say and when is called being an adult."

And, Jask is right. I gave Sophia too much credit by comparing her to a 12-year old. She definitely fits into the 5-year old behavior category. This girl NEVER shuts up. Never! She bitches, whines, complains, and yells constantly. At one point Jask tells her that she can't go with him into a dangerous situation and she whines at him to know why:

Jask: "You never know when to pull back, when enough is enough. You lack discipline, you lack control, you lack foresight, and you lack the common sense to know how to play the game. So that makes you too much of a liability to work with me."

But, Sophia whines, cries and begs until Jask relents and allows her to come along. She promises that she will obey absolutely any command he gives her while they are on this job.

Five minutes later: "Stay here," he said, holding his palm up to her as he proceeded cautiously ahead.

"Like hell I will," she whispered curtly, following behind him.

So, here's the thing. We are supposed to believe that Jask, the alpha leader of his pack who is way older than her, way wiser than her, way more mature, totally in control, AND a hottie who could have any woman he wants - falls in love with Sophia?? It's just not feasible. I would believe that he was willing to be her big brother/mentor to help her get a hold of her emotions waaaay easier than I could believe that she is a love interest. There is absolutely nothing attractive about this girl. Not only is she a ridiculous toddler in a woman suit, but she is also part of a hate group that is planning on targeting the very guy that supposedly falls for her. Her group that has been killing vampires and has decided that they are going to take out all of the leaders of the supernatural groups.

Jask: "What gives you the right to pass judgement on us? To make decisions about who lives and who dies?"

Sophia: "It's a very carefully targeted operation."

Jask: "Full of judgemental bigots. Excuse me if I'm not bowled over in admiration and reassurance."

And, we are supposed to believe that Jask just can't help falling for her charms? In just a day, by the way.

I call bullshit, sir!

And, by the way:

"If our actions in grief define us, Jask, we're all f*cked. No one reacts rationally to loss."

Angst. Forbidden love. Betrayal. Action. This is what I got when I read Blood Torn. Unlike it's predecessors, Blood Torn focused more on world building and bringing together the Blackthorn Saga. Don't get me wrong, this was very much Jask and Sophia's story, but a lot was brought forward. Book 2, Blood Roses left us with an open ending, there were loose ties, which are addressed in Blood Torn.

Characters
Sophia:
Sophia is a very strong female lead, she's independent and refuses to bow down to any man let alone a vampire. I'd be lying if I told you she was easy to like because she wasn't LOL! She was infuriating, she was prejudiced, and she was unwavering when it came to her beliefs. To date, she is probably the most headstrong heroine I had ever read about. But like everything else, there is more to her story. Her past and experiences helped her build a huge barrier, so she wouldn't have to get hurt...

Her relationship with Jask was a constant tug of war, and with two strong leads, the angst was palpable but so was the sexual tension.

He stepped up to her. "Because you're petulant, irritating, hard to handle, impulsive, naive. All of the above - and still I want to be with you. Because no one else makes me feel more like myself. No one makes me feel more alive."

Jask:
Jask is the leader of his pack, he was strong, ruthless and would do anything for the survival of his pack. But he was also a man with secrets, painful secrets from his past that hindered him from falling in love and being happy. Did I mention the angst in this book? He's determined to use Sophia, she will help him prevent his pack from dying whether or not she want's to.

He's unwilling to venture into any type of relationship with another of his kind, let alone a weak and obstinate human.

Analysis:
This book was intense, the first half is filled with plenty of information about Blackthorn. Immaculate world building, I see this dystopian civilisation, but at times I did feel overwhelmed. I do feel like some of the information could have been introduced in previous book to prevent this.

The second half read like a dream, fast paced, action and exciting revelations! I love reading books with a dark and creepy atmosphere, and this series fits the bill! With the teaser at the end of the book, I can't wait to read Blood Deep! The author brings a fresh take on otherworld beings!

Book three in the Blackthorn series and it has yet to disappoint!

When it comes to Paranormal Romances, there are certain things I want: One, a smoking hot guy to lust after (don’t judge!). Two, an awesome female character to root for (sistas unite!). Three – and this one might not be as important to others, but it is vital to me – a tight plot filled with action and adventure and all kinds of paranormal awesomeness to ensure the book is as enjoyable out of the bedroom as it is within.

This series has all of that, and more. It also has a dark and dangerous vibe to it that’s just impossible to resist. For example, let’s look at the men folk. Now, we all like a bad boy character now and then, right? Well, what you need to ask yourself here is, how bad can you handle? Because Pryor ain’t messin’ around here, guys. Her bad boys are seriously bad. Anti-heroes, almost. They do shocking things, violent things, cruel things. Sometimes to the heroine. And then the next minute, they’ll risk everything to pull some super protective manoeuvre that has your jaw dropping open and your heart all a-flutter. And before you know it, you’re head over heels and in way over your head. They’re addictive, sinful, carnal.

And I freakin’ love it!

Next, the ladies. Well, as you can imagine, no dainty wallflower is going last long around the kind of guys I just described. And nor would they want them to. The women in this series are just as badass as the men. Often misunderstood, sometimes not quite as tough as they would like to outwardly project, but they’re always, ALWAYS, a perfect match. Able to stand toe-to-toe with their honey, safe in the knowledge that although everyone else should be scared of him, he would never hurt her.

And I’m happy to report that BLOOD TORN is no different to the usual formula. We have alpha werewolf Jask and newly turned Seryn Sophia battling it out to see who will come out on top, and with their heart still intact. Sophia finds herself an unwilling guest at Chez Wolf and is willing to try anything and everything to escape, but Jask is a wolf with a purpose, a much higher purpose - the fate of his entire pack is at stake, and Sophia might just be the only person who can help them. Whether she wants to or not...

Jask and Sophia were fantastic, easily one of my favourite couples so far, although I think my heart will always belong to Kane (you never forget your first, right?). Their passion blazed hotter than the sun. Pryor certainly knows how to write a sex scene, that’s for damn sure! She also knows how to take readers on a journey with her characters, and to show the evolution of a relationship from natural enemies, to loyal comrades. And that’s what her couples seem to end up - as a team. A fearsome duo. They don’t quite walk off into the sunset Happily Ever After, not yet. Instead, all the partnerships being forged appear to be leading us to some kind of prophesised end-of-life-as-we-know-it conclusion, which is set to reveal itself in book four, and I simply cannot wait!

Highly recommended to all fans of dark paranormal romance.

I have yet to decide whether I'm going to keep reading this series. No doubt the world and the over-all arch in the plot are gripping and dark, the way I like it. Unfortunately these are mostly romance, and therefore need you to accept a lot.

I had some problems with the female leads in the other two books, so easily in love in a couple of days (I blame the grrl only 'cause she's the one who risks more. And well, I'm one, so I don't feel like empathizing with the hero :). But the setting and the idea were soo good, that I could accept almost anything.

As I said, almost. To me the heroine makes the day. Give me one I love and I'm ready to take everything an author dishes and I might even say 'thank you, ma'am'.

Blood Torn has one of the worst heroine I can think about: the whiny, stupid (and I do mean STUPID), fake-angsty 17 yo one. I had to skim read a lot of this book, and to stop so many times, as I could really not stand her. My status update at 30% was this:
Heroine is a stupid twit, a whiny teen, an unbelievable bore. Why would I want to read about such a character is beyond me. And three books with the same pattern is one too many. Sigh.

At 90% the heroine was still an idiotic, useless twit. She wasn't deep, tortured. She was simply an immature idiot, a drama queen centred only on herself, and with the impulse control of a toddler. Moreover, she's so easily manipulated and lied to that it's simply unbelievable she might have survived in such a gritty world. She has no good points or values, prior to the serryn affair.

As I keep saying I don't want my heroines to be Wonder Woman, but I want them to be women. Broken, full of rage, whatever, but please give me a woman. What am I supposed to do with a spoiled teen? How can anyone fall in love with such a fine example of idiocy? There's nothing really salvageable in her. You have to be a Sailor Moon fan to fall for her (meaning loving a very young teen).

The next book threaten the apocalypse. But I'm not sure I care to read about it, if I have to risk something like this again.

Just to be fair: this review is definitely personal, it's about my pet peeves and what pushes my buttons, in the wrong way. I do love the world this author has created, and I plan to read her again. But on the next book in this series I will read an sample first.

This time the hero is not a vampire but a lycan.

"Now THAT'S hot!"
Lycan leader Jask Tao will do anything to defend his pack. He is fierce, loyal, and determined to keep his pack safe.

Sophia has inherited her sister's secret serryn powers, which enables her to kill vampires. When she’s held captive by lethal Jask, she’ll do anything to escape to find them and kill those responsible for their harm.

I so, so loved Jask and the feisty Sophia. The slow-burning spark of attraction between them is hubba-hubbaaa... If you're a fan of J.R Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kelley Armstrong, Christine Feehan, Kresley Cole or Felicity Heaton then you'll love Lindsay J. Pryor's books too.

An enthralling and emotional journey from start to breathtaking end!
Blood Torn is book 3 in the critically acclaimed Blackthorn Series and is the first introduction into the lives of the lycan, another of the third species. Having adored and swooned over the dark and broody Blackthorn vamps I wasn’t expecting to have a favourite book of the series, but Blood Torn is it.
In Blood Shadows and Blood Roses the reader is gradually introduced into the world of Blackthorn and the prophecy which is key in the battle for control. Blood Torn combines all of these threads and begins to merge them together, yet creates further dilemma on an epic scale. This time we are taken deeper into Blackthorn where the story becomes less about calculation and control and more about survival.
Lycan leader Jask Tao will do anything to defend his pack. Having given evidence against the TSCD, betrayed Jask has made his pack vulnerable and the only way to defend them would be to find a serryn to help them. Serryn’s are rare, the risks are high and failure is not an option.
Sophia thrives on bringing down vamps on her quest for vengeance and she’ll do whatever it takes to succeed. Discovering she has become a serryn, a rare witch with lethal blood, might have made her task easier, but it also means her sisters are at risk. When she’s held captive by lethal Jask, she’ll do anything to escape to find them and kill those responsible for their harm.
Jask clings to control in Sophia’s presence. He lost it once and won’t fail his pack again, but Sophia and her smart mouth continue to challenge him in ways no other would dare. She pushes his buttons in so many ways and she’s the one he needs to tame, but the clock is ticking.
I went through the whole gamut of emotions when reading Blood Torn. Jask and his loyal dedication, his role as protector, adds a deeper layer of emotion to this series. I so, so loved Jask and the feisty Sophia. She really is a delight and oh, if Jask was a lycan of the furry kind, how I would want to ruffle his fur! I took them both to heart. The sharp witty banter had me chuckling, the intense sensuality took my breath, and the story stole my tears. Lots of them!
Expect the unexpected and then some! Beautifully written, Lindsay J. Pryor adds her jaw dropping twists and with the addition of a few familiar Blackthorn residents making an appearance, prepare to be stunned.
Fabulous.

RATING: 5+ Hearts!! <3 :D

"If only the choice of whom you fall for were that easy. None of us choose who we love, Jask, if it were about reason and logic and choice, it would be science, not emotion. It would stop being magic."

Blood Torn is definitely my fave of the series so far. That definitely had to do with one Jask Tao, cause sexy alpha-male! Ms. Pryor has created such an intricate paranormal world, and with each addition a new layer and dynamic to that world unfolds, making the read that much more enjoyable and thrilling. Not to mention, the interconnecting plot-lines of each couple is making me so excited to know what the final outcome will be come Global Council Vs. Third-Species. LOVING this series hardcore! Now, onto to the next to see what else this world and these characters have in store!

"He's a good friend," he said. "The best kind of friend. The kind who's there when you need them. Who sees you at your worst and works hard to get you back to your best."

INITIAL THOUGHTS 10/17/21

A Lycan romance but shelving it on the vampire shelf since the series has focused on vampires, on the whole. Less sexy times than Book 2, not complaining at all - worldbuilding, chemistry still off the charts. This series needs to come with an addiction warning. It is KILLING me (And I love it).

FULL REVIEW 10/27/21

I'm not a lycan/werewolf person. Give me the vamps, please and thank you. However, the power of Blackthorn is that you will fall in love with all the couples, whether they are vampire, lycan or even *gulp* human man.

I'm going to be talking about the story so if you prefer to go in blind, don't read it. No spoilers unless specified, but it does discuss their relationship.

So, Jask and Phia aren't my favourite couple but that doesn't mean I didn't love them. I do. They have a great love story. And there is literally no dud read in this series. Every book in the Blackthorn series will engage you. They probably would be my favourite couple if I read only their story, but compared to the other couples, I didn't feel the sexual tension high between Jask and Phia but I did completely buy in to their relationship.

The psychology of their relationship was very fascinating. I quite like Phia as a heroine because she has anger issues, and she has no filter. I'm trying to rack my brain for a heroine who is as smart and loving as she is as antagonistic and vulgar to the world.

I'm the type of reader who will respect a heroine for being authentic to her characterization. I was ok with Phia when she was moving from a space of anger and fear. I also had faith that she would learn. Also, Phia was quite refreshing after the quivering Leila who I love but it also wasn't in Leila's nature to go out guns blazing. Also, by the time Phia got to be a little self-destructive for my tastes, I had already bonded and liked her, so I was just along for the ride.

And Jask! Jask really won my respect in how HE reacted to her taunts. It was a testament to his growth as the leader of the pack too. We hear he did have his tough years where he was just as messy as Phia but he pulled himself out of it and is now this leader who is thoughtful, methodical - not an id.

I think that what attracts them to each other is that they recognize parts of themselves that are in shadow. Phia has poor impulse control, something that Jask has mastered. Jask can be that support for Phia to learn. Meanwhile, Jask sees in Phia those untamed parts of himself that are integral to his nature too. He craves the wildness of running free like he did in his childhood.

I love how they are attracted to each other, despite being different.

Phia, when she learns more about Jask, admires him. She is also incredibly attracted to him haha. Jask is never disgusted or frustrated or impatient at Phia for having to have a snappy comeback/provocative opener- I really loved how non-judgmental Jask was, and how accepting he was of Phia, how he could see her for who she was.

Because Phia is prickly but that doesn't mean she doesn't deserve to be loved, or that she needs to be ignored until she "grows up." I think also for someone like Jask, as a Lycan, there is this playfulness, openness that I think would respond well to someone like Phia. Who, unlike her other sisters, Leila and Alicia are considered the pretty ones, Alicia, the fun girl to hang out with, and Leila the responsible but delicate elder sister. Phia is relatable - she's not afraid to get a little dirty. She's straightforward. She's appealing in that physical vitality of hers.

I did remember feeling cheated out of a "Jask loses control" scene because I felt it was hinted and suggested in this story, but in their next book together, we get that so yay!

I also remember feeling how, even though it was not about vampires, I was incredibly fascinated by a look at the north of Blackthorn which is ruled by the Lycans that live in their Compound.

In the previous book, Blood Roses, we saw how Caleb Dehain ran the east of Blackthorn, and in the first book, Blood Shadows, Kane was the leader of the west. In the next book, you can guess that we will travel to the South. This is another clever framing device that I liked about the series.

One of my favourite scenes was Phia's

You can guess from my rating that it's not my favorite book in the series. I loved the previous two, but Blood Torn was an uphill struggle, and it took me over a month to finish it.

What went wrong?

An annoying heroine for once. Phia is one of those, with a big chip on her shoulder, a lot of bluster and hardly any skill to back it up. She works for Alliance, and is taken by the vampires when serryn line jumps from her older sister to her. By sheer miracle she survives, saved by lycans who see in her a way to get a highly needed herb for their upcoming transformation, a herb they are lacking.

Here we come to my second problem, a lack of believable emotional ties to Jask Tao, the lycans leader. He is a nice male character, and I enjoyed reading about him, but I could not see them working together as a couple, Phia was so emotionally immature. I certainly could not believe in their instalove. And yes, I know, it worked for me well enough in the previous books.

Third problem is a lot of talk throughout the book and very little action. There is talk about what to do, what's right and what's wrong and plenty of psychobabble. There are only two pretty awesome moments which enticed me to continue - Phia torturing a vampire as a serryn and Phia going through the tunnel.

The ending is abrupt as well in an attempt to make us wait for an all-out supernatural war in the next book. There was potential here but in my opinion this book was stuck in an editorial limbo - for a paranormal romance it needed less talk and more make out sessions and for an urban fantasy it needed less talk and more action. Oh well, hopefully next book will be better.

This series has yet to disappoint. I think this was my favorite book so far. I love the Blackthorn world Lindsay has imagined into reality in her Blackthorn series. Ground work for plots and twists to come were masterfully laid out in this edge of your seat romance between Sophia and Jask Tao.

Sophia recently inherited her sister's secret serryn powers, which enable her to kill any vampire she lures into biting her. Something terrible had to have happened for the powers to move from her sister to her, and she is determined to find her sisters and make sure they are safe. For years she has been fighting against third species in the under belly of Blackthorn, and now she has a real chance at defeating her enemies. Fate has a different idea for her when she is found chained and beaten by the lycan leader Jask Tao.

Jask is the virile leader of the Blackthorn lycan pack. He is fierce, loyal and determined to keep his pack safe, even if it is at his own expense. He vows to suppress the intense attraction he feels towards his new captive because she is key to saving his pack.

Intense and intimate, the dance these two dance is captivating as well as turbulent. I couldn't put it down! I loved it. A must read.

Reread and still 5 stars! This series is awesome!!! The following review is since the first time I read it but I am not going to change it!

...........................................................................................................................................

This book was sexy...

But it also made me cry...

This series is getting better and better! And this story is the perfect example! A dark world-building and some of the most interesting characters are two of the main reasons that I love these books and I couldn’t put them down! Lycans, vampires, witches and humans are part of a world that it’s far from a good place to live. Everyone wants to survive and no one is safe.

This is the story of Sophia and Jask. She is a new serryn and until now her mind was only on revenge and how she could kill every vampire on earth. Jask is the leader of the lycan and one of the key players in the power-play of this unique world. Both of them are damaged and full of regrets for decisions they made many years ago.

Like the previous main characters each of them has a different agenda but both of them wants the best for the world they are living. Sophia is stubborn but brave and sometimes it’s easy to see that behind her tough façade, she’s a lonely young woman who lost her innocence too early in her life with the death of her mother. Yes, sometimes she made some bad decisions. But, to be honest, I understand her and I believe that she only needs some stability in her life and then she will be able to thrive.

Jask is hot and dangerous with a very dark side. I have to admit that he has some good reasons to have regrets. He didn’t realize that bad thing happen and sometimes he won’t be able to say how he truly feels and then it would be late. He learned a harsh lesson and now he can’t turn back time. Nevertheless, he’s a good man. He wants the best for his people and he’s the kind of man that will do anything in order to do right.

It’s a great book that makes us understand even better the unique world-building and I recommend it to all the fans of this genre! Can’t wait for the next one!

DNF.

This heroine is so childish and ridiculous that I just can't take anymore. At 8% in she was annoying, at 10% in I hated her and by 15% I wanted someone to throat punch her so she would shut the hell up. I can't possibly imagine any scenario where this hero would want to have sex with a woman who acts so unbelievably rude and patronizing. I just can't.

Stick a fork in me. I'm done.

Dark, Sexy & Thrilling

If you've read any of the Blackthorn books (and if you haven't, seriously, WTH are you waiting for?!), then you know what I know, which is that author Lindsay J. Pryor is crazy good at this writing stuff. Her world-building skills are scary-impressive, her writing style is crisp and confident, and her characters are dark and deadly. And once her books sink their teeth into you, there's no going back. You're hooked. For life.

In Blood Torn, the attention shifts from the vampires to the lycans, and being the lycan/shifter lover that I am, I couldn't have been more thrilled by this. From day one, I've been itching to read the lycans' story, and I'm happy to report that it was well worth the wait!

Phia McKay has just discovered she's a serryn, a rare and powerful witch gifted (or cursed, depending on how you look at it) with blood that is fatal to vampires. She barely has time to process the sudden change in her circumstances when she runs afoul of Blackthorn lycans and is whisked off to their super-secret compound as their prisoner. The lycans, you see, are in need of something only a serryn can get for them, and that makes Phia their new favorite person.

The Blackthorn lycans are, hands down, some of the best I've read about. Though they take a concoction to keep them from actually shifting (for everyone's safety), they've still got that wild animal edge that makes lycans my favorite supernatural race. Lindsay Pryor did a spectacular job showcasing the lycans' strengths and making it very clear that they are every bit as badass and formidable as their vampire counterparts. What really wowwed me, though, was the overall pack dynamic. This is a healthy, tightly knit, and fully functioning pack that has stood together through the best and worst of times. They have their drama moments, sure, but everyone is invested in the pack's future, and be extension, each other. I loved that.

Leading the lycan charge is Jask Tao. As the Alpha, the pack's fate rests on his shoulders, and fortunately for everyone, Jask's shoulders are broad, firm and more than up to the task. Out of all the Blackthorn heroes we've met so far, Jask was the most warm and fuzzy, and all that really means is that he kept his dark side more tightly under wraps than, say, Kane or Caleb from books one and two - but Jask did have a dark side! Very much so. It's become a trademark of Pryor's male characters, and it's one of the many reasons her books are among my favorites. She writes tall, dark, and dangerous better than almost any author I know, and Jask was so....wow. Just, WOW.

Phia, now - Phia was a challenge. She's all prickles and stings, especially in the beginning, with a bad habit of lashing out and saying all the wrong things. There's a reason for that, but getting to the heart of who Phia really is requires readers to cut through multiple layers of scar tissue. If you're like me and enjoy flawed characters, this won't bother you, but if you're looking for a heroine you can immediately relate to, Phia might be a tough pill for you to swallow. What made the difference for me, I think, was Jask. He saw something in Phia that I didn't (at first), and because HE saw redeeming qualities, I wanted to as well. I simply had to know what made this girl tick, and if she was as worthy of Jask's time as he thought she was. And you know what? SHE WAS. Phia turned out to be one helluva leading lady. As the new serryn, she is a Very Important Person in the Blackthorn world, and like the characters from the other books, we haven't seen the last of her. EVERYONE in this series has an unfinished and ongoing story, to some degree or another, and Phia is no exception.

Like the rest of Pryor's writing, the romance has a deliciously dark edge to it. There are no wasted moments, no ho-hum scenes. Phia and Jask meet, sparks fly, and they keep flying. Their relationship is a sexy, surprising, totally perfect thrill ride.

The real icing on this awesome cake, though, is seeing all the different story threads start to come together. THIS is the book where it really hits you - when you begin to understand why there haven't been any clear-cut HEA's up to this point. Because there can't be. With each book, the groundwork is being laid, leading up to what is sure to be an epic showdown between the third species inhabitants of Blackthorn and the Big Bad(s) who are determined to wipe them out.

Blood Torn was everything I hoped it would be and so much more. The entire series has rocked my socks off and I can't WAIT to see what happens next!

As far as stubborn, close-minded female protagonists in this series go, Phia is actually not the worst, despite the rocky beginning. In fact, I think I like her the most out of all the other girls so far. Caith's been obnoxious with her naivety. I don't know why people seem to dislike Phia. She's childish at times, sure, but she's not meek and has a stubborn streak a mile long, which is actually a good thing to have, if you have to keep up with Jask Tao.

"Her life was just one incident after another in a long line of defiance, of disorder, or rebellion. Though she had survived that day in the lake, Phia had never stopped drowning. Every day she was grappling, gasping for air and reaching out for something to grab on to." - from the internal monologue of one Jask Tao - badass hottie extraordinaire

And holy. Lemme talk about Jask fuckin' Tao everybody. 10/10 would drool over him any time of the week. As alpha and in charge as both Kane and Caleb, but without the whole push-and-pull will-he-won't-he thing going on. He's not withholding information (too much of it, not when compared to the other two men), he doesn't have angsty internal monologues about doing the right thing (which bothered me a lot on the last two books, it was repetitive to the max and annoying as hell). Jask is in charge and he knows it. He figured his shit out a long time ago, learnt from his mistakes and now tries to do things right the first way around. (Which is how it should be. We're talking about really old supernatural creatures here, and they don't seem to have their shit figured out.)

TL;DR Jask Tao is my new book boyfriend.

The plot is split in two directions: the main story and the over-all arc (which is also chugging along nicely). The main plot is very simple and to the point, with hints thrown in for the over-all storyline. We got some backstory as well in the first part of the book. As far as the prophecy goes, it seems that Kane wants to prevent it and Caleb wants to start it, although, I hope Leila changes Caleb's mind. The thing with Rone was heartbreaking. We got a small glimpse of what Jask meant to him in the beginning, but the revelation at the end and the twist broke my poor heart.

I'm really pleased to see this author getting better and better with every new book. I'm also glad to see them not use 'nubile body' anymore in their writing. Can't wait for the next one, although I'm sad we don't get back to Jask until book #6. Ah, well. Better late than never!

This is the third in the authors Blackthorn series. I absolutely loved the previous two books, Blood Shadows and Blood Roses. This one did not disappoint!

I strongly suggest starting the series from book one, as there are storylines you need to know to fully understand what's happening in this book.

Each book introduces us to a different couple who will play an important part as the series continues. I know from the author that we have one more couple to meet, and an introduction to that couple is featured at the end of this one.

In Blood Torn we are introduced to Jask Tao, leader of the Lycans. He is a tough leader, doesn't take any nonsense, and is known for his decisive decisions when it comes to the running of his pack.

Sophia discovers very early in the story that she has become a serryn, and knows exactly what this means. As a result she is desperate to escape from Jask's clutches and find her sisters. She will do anything to get to them, even if it puts her own life in danger.

The story is a whirlwind of activity from start to finish. The emotion, the action, the intertwined stories. Everything is written with the same amazing flow we have come to expect from this author. She instantly draws us into the story, into the characters and from that moment on we are invested in their lives.

We once again meet characters from the previous books. You can start to see the way the characters are going to come together and work in the future books. But I am sure the author is going to put them through plenty of twists and turns along the way to throw us off the scent. Every time I think I have figured out what's happening she goes and writes something which shocks me.

I cannot express enough how much I love this author and her imagination. To bring her vision onto the pages of the stories she writes, in the way she does, is nothing short of amazing. I honestly count her as one of my favourite authors, producing one of my favourite series, and one I cannot wait to read in the future.

A highly highly highly recommended book, and indeed series, from me.

Blood Torn is the 3rd book in the series "Blackthorn" by Author Lindsay Pryor. This book is a continuation of a long developing in-depth story line where there is war brewing between the third species (Vampires, Lycans, and witches) and the humans (and whoever else is wanting to get rid of the third species). This story follows Jask Tao, the unbelievably HOT Lycan leader, and Sophia (a newly rare Serryn witch).

Sophia - In the beginning (First 16 or so percent) Sophia got on my last nerve, I had a hard time relating to why in the world she was acting so childish. I like to relate to the characters and try to understand why they act the way they do. (because by 50 percent and they still get on my nerves and it seems the character is not evolving I DNF it). She turned out to be one of my favorite heroines. The author did not drag the childish act out. Sophia carried a lot of guilt over a lot of stuff that has happened in her life. (her mothers death, her grief, the way she shut her sisters out) She was the kinda of person that acted out first then thought it through.

Jask - He is the fearless leader of the Lycans and he will do anything to protect them. He was Alpha right from the start to finish. But even though he put up a good face with everyone he too carried a lot of guilt from past mistakes that he kept bottled up. We got introduced to Jask in the first book and I knew he would be great character.

Holy Shit this was a good book! So much information and emotion in this one. The story is getting so gooood. I absolutely LOVED the relationship between Sophia and Jask. It was quite the journey for them two. The way the characters evolved with each other was so heart warming. Their love for each other felt real. And OMG the sex was goooood. We get a look at the Lycan side of Blackthrorn and it did not disappoint! I love the Lycans. And I would not complain at ALL if the author decides to do another Lycan story.... just saying. :D This was by far the best in the series.

So I have just finished re-reading this book, and like the last two I absolutely loved it. In this book we are introduced to Jask and Phia. Jask was in book 1 but not much. We also meet the Lycans. Jask is the alpha of the Lycan pack and Phia is a new Serryn.
I am not going to go into the story line but it is a brilliant story and you can see where all the different books connect and how the story is starting to unfold, and how all the characters are connecting.

So far, Blackthorn is turning out to be a three-star series for me. It's strange, because I really do admire the writing and the skill the author possesses to be able to create such a complex and interesting world. I just can't fall in love with the stories yet. I don't know why.

I'm most excited to get back to Kane and Caitlin, though. They are definitely my favorite couple in the Blackthorn world. I really enjoyed Jask and Phia's romance (in fact I preferred it to her sister's love story from the previous book), but I did have some problems with it.

Mainly, I just don't understand how they fell in love in under two days. I also don't understand how Jask was able to be romantic with this woman he just met after his son had been brutally murdered. It was too out there for me. How would this extremely new (not to mention contentious) relationship hold up under that kind of trauma when they barely know each other?

I'm realizing after reading the third book in the Blackthorn series, that Lindsay J. Pryor adores the love at first sight trope, which is completely fine. I think it worked for Kane's story, but despite Jask and Phia's lovely chemistry, I don't think it worked in this book because of the circumstances they faced.

I did love the way Phia and Jask connected. They were sort of mirrors of each other and dealt with the same type of emotional issues, which I found very compelling. It really is a sweet romance if you can overlook the implausibility of the whole thing. And like I said, the worldbuilding is amazing. I just didn't love it.

I think I said this in my review of book two, but I'm hoping eventually this author will try her hand at a slow burn romance. That's more my taste, and I think with her wonderful writing it could be incredible. Regardless, I'm excited to see where the plot goes in the next book. It seems like everything in this world is becoming more dangerous for the characters and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Blood Torn is the third installment in Lindsay J. Pryor’s paranormal romance series, Blackthorn.

A fan of the author and the series, Blood Torn was a welcome read albeit one that left me characteristically disappointed that I would need to wait at least another six months or more before the next installment. But good things definitely come to those who wait, so I wait patiently.

My favorite book in the series is by far Blood Shadows and not being a fan of lycans in general, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Blood Torn.

Jask Tao was originally featured as an ancillary character in Blood Shadows. But Blood Torn is his story.

As the story unfolds, we are immediately introduced to Jask, the leader of the lycans and Sophia or Phia, a member of The Alliance, a rebel organization that has come under fire and who suddenly and under precarious circumstances learns she is a serryn (a powerful witch with lethal blood that can kill vampires.) Jask takes Phia against her will and so begins the story of the lycan and the serryn.

Sparks fly the moment these two come face-to-face and you know you are in for a treat as the conflict between these two rip-roars off the page. At first, Jask isn't sure what to make of the fierce Phia but soon, Jask realizes Phia is his golden ticket, a prize the vampires would pay dearly for. But it's hard to offer up the prize when Jask and Phia share an explosive chemistry that is rather hard to ignore for both.

Phia, who is pig-headed with a penchant for speaking before thinking and a polar opposite to Jask's cool, calm front, starts to evolve just enough to realize the kind of plight Jask and his pack are in when the supply of the herbal concoction they take to hide their true nature is dwindling and fast and she wants nothing more than to help him.

But Phia has her own issues to deal with when her blood turns poisonous, a rare trait that can mean only one thing, her sister Leila (introduced in Blood Roses,) is in trouble and manages to escape Jask's captivity only to come back of her own willingness. Somewhere along the way, the immature Phia realizes Jask is a stellar kind-of guy who has planted himself in her heart and her once childish antics turn serious and she is all about doing the right thing despite her own many misgivings.

The story, like Blood Shadows and Blood Roses before it, is a love story that develops while the characters are exercising duty, duty to their loved ones, to their position, to their race. That same theme holds true in Blood Torn where Jask and Phia grow together, torn then bonded by their duty to their families respectively.

Again, the author’s fluid writing style kept me glued to the pages. But more than her taIent for words is her ability to create a complex world while intersecting character storylines adeptly. Blood Torn does not disappoint as the series takes many twists and turns, building on secrets that haunt these characters, driving them to the extremes, thereby adding layers and creating dimension and depth that is not often seen in paranormal romance.

Fair warning! As a reader of the series, it is advisable that new readers start with Blood Shadows then progress to Blood Roses and Blood Torn in that order. Blood Torn makes many references to past characters and storylines, weaving them into Jask and Phia’s story as a continuation of the overall arc of Blackthorn series.

If you haven’t picked up the books in The Blackthorn Series, you are doing yourself a disservice as a reader.

But going back to Blood Torn, the book is elegant, fiery and elaborate with equal parts heat and love mixed in for good measure. Can't wait for Blood Deep to release!

My rating – a must read!

Blood Torn tells the story of Jask Tao, a lycan alpha we were first introduced to in Blood Shadows. Jask is a fearsome alpha, who rules his pack with dedication and expects the same in return.

However, when is thrown together with Phia McKay, sister of Leila who we met in Blood Roses, all hell breaks loose.

To describe Phia as fiery would be a disservice to flames! She is awesome, unbelievable, and at times, downright frustrating, but I have to admit, she is the first of the ladies in Blackthorn that I’ve really found a connection with. She is flawed, incredibly so, but there is something so vulnerable, so needy about her that made me love her so much.

My favourite master vampire, Kane Malloy, makes a few appearances in Blood Torn, and each time, I find myself doing a little jig. But this story stands up so incredibly well in its own, moving us forward in this complex world, and filling in some of the gaps of the early two books.

If you’ve got this far in, you’re probably like me….hooked. Whilst we all have our favourites (mine is definitely Kane), each story is so strong in its own right, and each one is taking us closer to what is fast revealing itself as an inevitable war between First and Third species.

Oooohhhhh – can’t wait!

Lindsay J. Pryor did an excellent job! I love the characters and I love the plot. Jask Tao is such a hot lycan leader and Sophia sparks with wicked responses so when they both meet it is unavoidable for a huge explosion!

I'm going to be honest and say I wasn't expecting too much from this one, just because Jask's brief appearance in past installments never particularly caught my interest. But it's probably my second favorite of the series so far. I absolutely could not put it down, I read it in a day.

What a fun intense couple with sizzling chemistry. The story here takes place only within a couple of days so Sophie and Jask connected pretty quickly but I totally bought it. It didn't feel rushed or unrealistic at all. They just made sense together in every way.

The world building, which fell short for me in previous books, really flourished here and i'm just super excited to know and experience more in the future.

Blood Torn

I love, love, loved this instalment in the Blackthorn series. I have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of the werewolf/lycan type genre but this book just blew me away and I think I have a new appreciation for the genre again.

I loved the relationship between Jask and Phia. It was sexy, enthralling and hot all rolled into one. Ms Pryor just knows how to connect two characters together and give her readers the feeling they are in the story. I really really love this series.
