Wasif Ali Wasif is a writer, poet and Sufi intellectual from Pakistan. He is famous for his unique literary style. He used to write short pieces of prose on topics like love, life, fortune, fear, hope, expectation, promise, prayer, happiness, sorrow and so on. He did poetry in Urdu and Punjabi languages. Probably no contemporary Urdu writer is more cited in quotations than he is. Later years he used to answer questions in specially arranged gatherings at Lahore attended by the notable community. Some of these sessions were recorded in audio and were later published as Guftagoo (talk) series. His mehfils never had a set subject nor did he lecture on chosen topics. His way was to ask people if they had questions and then he responded to these in his highly original style. His thought was more on mysticism, spirituality and humanity. There are about 40 books to his credit including “Shab Chiragh”, “Kiran Kiran Sooraj”, and “Dil Darya Samandar”. It is self-evident that his books as well as recordings of talks are a treasure trove of wisdom.
As a Writer Wasif Ali Wasif was given much to silence. He spent most part of the day in silent tranquility, but when he spoke there was nothing that was not quotable. His written and spoken words are quotable for their content as well as their construction. Master of aphorism, he has the miraculous ability to capture a rainbow of meaning in a few dewdrops of well chosen words. His newspaper writings secured him a permanent place in the gallery of stylist prose writers. Though his main claim to fame is his writings, a select circle knows that he was an equally great conversationalist. Ashfaq Ahmed, the conversationalist par excellence of our time has said, The sentences we concoct are our piece of craft, Wasif’s lines came from somewhere else. His prose is simpler, using figures of speech less frequently and thus sounds more natural but it has distinctive qualities of fine poetry. Renowned politician and connoisseur of art and literature, Hanif Ramay is of the view Wasif’s prose influences readers in the same manner as the poetry of Iqbal. Another interesting aspect of his literary masterpieces is that these originally appeared as columns in an Urdu daily defying the strongly held belief that journalism cannot produce pure literature which can have a long life. Siraj Muneer, a well-read scholar and critic, has written, We took them as columns but they were another aalam (world). A discussion of his peculiar style would be incomplete without mentioning that all his writings have a lot between the lines too. He believed that a thought can never be expressed fully in words, a reader should be alive to this fact and should try comprehending the portion that was impossible to be carried in words. The leading critic and scholar Professor Gilani Kamran comments on his book ‘Dil Darya Samundar’ that Wasif Ali Wasif’s collection of essays has a pleasant rhythm of an emotionally sustained prose. The sentence moves with grace and the words have the ring of sensation. These features are only rarely found in modern Urdu prose. But whether or not one succeeds in discovering himself, or in entering the field of a higher experience, the rhythm of Wasif’s prose certainly compensates for any loss of achievement. With this one book, it can be said with some assurance, our culture is seen to be moving out of a closed world and entering an age of self discovery where a single individual becomes the object of new orientation and also the locus of a new destiny.” continue to full text
This is one of those books that deserve to be read again and again till each and every word is fully absorbed, understood, and retained in memory for life. When I had begun reading this book, I remember treating it with detached reverence, and it was only when I had read the chapter Main aur Main that I began allowing this book to penetrate deeper. When you start taking these kind of books seriously and give them their needed contemplation, only then can they move and inspire. Yaad took my breath away. Many passages and many lines had come before this chapter that sent a jolt through me, but the impact this chapter had, no word had before or could have after. Of course, the reasons were all personal and those times are strange when you read something and feel as if the writer had known you and your thoughts and your life. You feel connected to a person you've never met, who never knew you, just because he wrote a certain bunch of words. So, apart from the wisdom this book holds within its pages, this book is special to me because of those very bunch of words that made me feel less alone in ways I cannot begin to tell you.
If I leave all of that aside and write about this book objectively, then I have to applaud Wasif sir for his brilliant style. Each sentence could pass off as an aphorism and that's some achievement. Considering the depth and wisdom of its chapters, this book is written in an uncharacteristic simple way and is, strangely, a very quick read. I say uncharacteristic because such books are often written in a tedious, complex and verbose manner, with long elaborate sentences, half of them going over your head. His sentence is short, curt, pithy, well-phrased and yet contains all the profundity of this world. He has a knack at building dichotomies, writing about paradoxes and ironies of life and reality that make you think hard and long, and he does all of this with great perfection. Nowhere do you hear the rant and pretentious didacticism of a moralist, instead a subtle and enlightening wisdom of one of the finest spiritualists and philosophers of our country.
Another personal thing: I had written A drop of water, a small passage, a long time ago on my blog, long before I had come across this book. It was startling to see the qatrah qulzum here as one of Wasif sir's most beautiful metaphors. Of course, we differ completely in our meanings, but to share a metaphor with this guy still makes me want to gloat shamelessly.(Actually, I am gloating shamelessly as I write this.) But ignore all these personal and biased reasons. This book is truly worth reading and worth rereading and rereading yet again. Do try.
A collection of beautiful essays. His words take you to another world. Sometimes it happens that you just not only read but feel the words, this is a matter to me when I was reading this book. YAAD, WAADA, and BURHAPA are my top favs.
Beautiful. The book is comprised of short articles on topics like love, prayer, time, patience etc. It's irrelevant whether you agree with everything Mr. Wasif says, he should be read anyway.
All the essays are brilliant. Personal favorites were "Yaad", "Burhapa and "Waqt" but each of them offer something different. Wish someone would translate this into English so a larger group of people could benefit from such a wonderful book. For a discussion of the book please see -
A collection of articles on everything otherworldly; including love, supplication, time and persistence. On some level, I have always related with Wasif Ali Wasif, his words just calm you. You just understand them, even If you don't. His words have the rights to be pursued over and over, until they are completely assimilated, comprehended and stored in the memory forever.
Fantastic book on mysticism and the spiritual apprehension of knowledge inaccessible to the common intellect. Key themes included the following: 1. Love for God supersedes love for materialism 2. Fear is a perspective, fear is a point of view and fear is a manifestation of bad intentions and hatred is a sign of fear 3. Fear mainfests in heart which understands sin but doesn't have the power to leave it 4. Truth and lies have different perspective and can both be correct, don't search for the truth, search for truthful people 5. Knowledge is not acquired through books, but through destiny, foresight and vision 6. Education is used to find a job, not to find god 7. Without vision, Knowledge is worse than ignorance 8. You don't get peace of mind from desire, you get it from destiny 9. Hatred, grudge, revenge, jealousy, greed, lust are all against peace of mind. 10. Pain enters our life by masking happiness and happiness exits our life through pain.. we leave people for the same reasons that attracted us to them in the first place 11. People with wisdom suffer because they select, they think and then regret their decisions but they are still better than one dimensional thinkers 12. Repentance in youth is noble and traits of prophets 13. We sell time to spend our time , we get enslaved in our freedom to make our life meaningful. Time is a finite entity and your most impt asset. 14. Be patient on things you don't understand and ponder on those you do.
My Review of "Dil Darya Samandar" — According to My Thoughts
When I started reading "Dil Darya Samandar", I didn’t really know what to expect — and honestly, I still don’t know how to explain what I felt. This is not a book you simply read; it’s something you go through, silently, deeply, slowly.
I couldn’t understand everything in it. Sometimes I felt like I was holding something precious, but I didn’t know how to hold it properly. The words were simple, but their depth scared me — as if they were touching places inside me that I had forgotten or ignored.
Wasif Ali Wasif didn’t give answers — he gave feelings. And that’s why this book stayed with me. Even when I closed it, some thoughts kept circling in my heart. It was like something important had been said… but in a language only the heart could hear.
There were moments when I had to stop and breathe. Not because I was tired of reading — but because something had hit too deep. A sentence, a word, a silence between the lines. It felt like the book wasn’t talking about life in general — it was talking about my life.
This book made me realize that we don’t always have to fully understand everything with our mind. Some things are meant to be accepted with the heart. Some truths arrive in silence, not in explanations.
Even though it was difficult for me to fully absorb or express, I still felt close to it. Maybe that’s the beauty of this book — it doesn’t require you to be an expert. It just asks you to be honest, quiet, and open.
Now that I’ve finished it, I don’t feel like I’ve “understood” it. But I do feel like I’ve experienced it. And I know I’ll come back to it again — maybe when I’m stronger, softer, or more ready.
Because "Dil Darya Samandar" is not a one-time read. It’s a lifetime companion.
When I first picked up Dil Darya Samandar, I didn’t expect it to touch me the way it did. Wasif Ali Wasif’s words don’t just speak — they resonate, offering comfort, clarity, and a specific kind of wisdom that lingers long after you’ve closed the book.
Dil Darya Samandar by Wasif Ali Wasif is a timeless masterpiece that transcends the boundaries of conventional literature.
His style is unique — poetic, concise, and thought-provoking. He doesn’t preach; he awakens. i sometimes in fact quite find myself to pause to reflect on a single line that seems as if it was written especially for me.
Well ! I would say that the one of the book’s greatest strengths is its universal appeal. It offers solace to the seeker, clarity to the confused, and inspiration to the disheartened.
Dil Darya Samandar is not just a book — It is one of those rare works that you can consult with as many times you like and each time you will discover a new pearl of wisdom. For anyone on a journey of self-discovery or spiritual awakening, this book is a guiding light.
