With regard to his poetry he wrote, "My poetry is a declaration of war, not an exordium to defeat. It is not the defeated soldier's drumbeat of despair, but the fighting warrior's will to win. It is not the despirited voice of dejection but the stirring shout of victory.

Atalji used to be my favourite politician during my growing days. With limited knowledge of history and civics, truth to be said, I was least interested in his politics, but hugely attracted towards his personality. The way he spoke, taking long pauses, as if evaluating every word that he uttered, knowing very well what impact those would have on the people of the country that he was leading - impressed me immensely.
I remember, watching him in parliament, when every now and then he would spontaneously quote his poems to contextualize an argument, that had lasting impression on my mind.

मेरे प्रभु!
मुझे इतनी ऊँचाई कभी मत देना,
गैरों को गले न लगा सकूँ,
इतनी रुखाई कभी मत देना।

When I was reading these poems of his, I realized that I was imitating Atalji's style while reciting those in my mind. Such was his impact. And that made the poems more enjoyable.

Tagore said, “It is very simple to be happy, but it is very difficult to be simple.”

That's probably the beauty of Atalji's poems - so simple, yet so profound.

भीड़ में खो जाना,
यादों में डूब जाना,
स्वयं को भूल जाना,
अस्तित्व को अर्थ,
जीवन को सुगंध देता है।

What great lines. "Forgetting self gives meaning to existence."
Or take these lines…

हरी हरी दूब पर 
ओस की बूंदे 
अभी थी, 
अभी नहीं हैं| 
ऐसी खुशियाँ 
जो हमेशा हमारा साथ दें 
कभी नहीं थी, 
कहीं नहीं हैं| 

or

पृथ्वी पर मनुष्य ही एक ऐसा प्राणी है,
जो भीड़ में अकेला
और अकेले में भीड़ से घिरे होने का अनुभव करता है।

Or

आदमी की पहचान,
उसके धन या आसन से नहीं होती,
उसके मन से होती है।
मन की फकीरी पर
कुबेर की संपदा भी रोती है।

Atalji wrote poems on various subjects - life, experiences, nationalism, politics and many more.
I loved his poems that were based on his take on life's philosophy.

I am fortunate to read his poems in original language.

Deep, soulful, heart touching poems by evergreen Vajpayee jee. My favourites are "hari hari dub par", "maut se than gayi" and "raah kaun si jaun mein".

हरी हरी दूब पर
ओस की बूंदे
अभी थी,
अभी नहीं हैं|
ऐसी खुशियाँ
जो हमेशा हमारा साथ दें
कभी नहीं थी,
कहीं नहीं हैं|
क्काँयर की कोख से
फूटा बाल सूर्य,
जब पूरब की गोद में
पाँव फैलाने लगा,
तो मेरी बगीची का
पत्ता-पत्ता जगमगाने लगा,
मैं उगते सूर्य को नमस्कार करूँ
या उसके ताप से भाप बनी,
ओस की बुँदों को ढूंढूँ?

सूर्य एक सत्य है
जिसे झुठलाया नहीं जा सकता
मगर ओस भी तो एक सच्चाई है
यह बात अलग है कि ओस क्षणिक है
क्यों न मैं क्षण क्षण को जिऊँ?
कण-कण मेँ बिखरे सौन्दर्य को पिऊँ?

सूर्य तो फिर भी उगेगा,
धूप तो फिर भी खिलेगी,
लेकिन मेरी बगीची की
हरी-हरी दूब पर,
ओस की बूंद
हर मौसम में नहीं मिलेगी|

It is the famous Vajpayee book with his famous works like 'Kadam Milakar Chalna Hoga', 'Áo fir se Dia Jalaein', 'Geet Naya Gaata Hoon', 'Yaksha Prashn' etc. The 51 kavitas are divided in 4 sections - Anubhuti, Rashtriyata, Chunauti and Vividh. At the end it also contains the poet's brief biography, an interview and an introduction to his poetic style.
Vajpayee's kavitas are very poignant and often touch upon sacrifice and human values. He was a deep sensitive thinker and it reflects. The touch of philosophy and rootedness that was the hallmark of his personality is also evident in his works. A good read.

Well, I have read so many collections of poems in Hindi but I fail to find a single poet who can stand with Atal ji. His far faced images show his unique skill to compose an everlasting poem. I really like his poems that produce an enormous amount of energy in the heart of the readers.
