Summary of my review: Not a typical horror book (features psychological horror). Main character has a great development throughout the book. Amy was demanding and selfish. Viscous circle.



Another book I liked a bit more than the rest of the series.



I love that it's not the typical horror story one would read and that even R.L. Stine experimented with the subgenre psychological horror. I really like those. So when I read this book I was hooked from the start. And the ending had so many plot twists! Very fun and tense read. There might not be a monster, but there will be a hero.

The only thing I didn't like was how Amy was always talking for Craig and always made decisions for him. Craig also complainted about this and I can't but agree. She was so selfish and always said 'that's not scary', 'he can do MORE'. Especially the 'more' part. She just put him deeper and deeper into this only for money. And I am pretty sure just like Craig that if he wouldn't have done what he would have done at the end they wouldn't have stopped. All of them. Including Amy. She was somewhat a bully too.

This story wasn't just about a boy being terrified of every small thing. There was a character development from the start. Not only did he not scream, but he also never not done any task he was told to do. He only felt his feelings but he never showed his emotions. That's a kind of braveness. Acting though even if you don't feel like it. 'Cause most people aren't though and therefore also never do a though action. I see everyone brave who actually does something for it. No matter if they are still afraid, actions speak louder. A great example on Craig's development is when he visited the morgue the second time and instead of taking a long time even just jumping through the window he just went inside the morgue like it's nothing. You can tell me what you want, but he became mentally stronger.

A really basic plot, yet a fun time.

So the story is a little bit different, we follow our main character Craig who I assume must have a very embarassing reputation from his old neighborhood, now he's moved into a new town and tries to take this opportunity to try and reinvent on himself and in someways I kinda relate to the character trying to make an improved new self after what I assumed being bullied from the past. but as the story goes along, we follow some kids from his new neighborhood trying to set him up in series of dares, trying to test how he's a brave boy and most of them are fun and sometimes ridiculous to read through, especially the spider jar scene, that's funny and also kinda intense to see.

Although not the best of all the Goosebumps stories, I enjoyed it for being different than the unusual formula, it's more grounded in reality no ghosts, monsters or demons, just a realistic setup which makes the story atleast relatable.

Ahhh. What a fantastic book. I have a lot I want to unpack with this one since it’s one of the major highlights of the Goosebumps franchise for me. I’m gonna go more in depth than usual, but considering it’s a 5 ⭐️ rating from me I feel like I owe it to you all.

Off the bat, this book is surrounded in realism which caught me off guard when I was younger. As I got older and revisited the story as an adult, it made it feel fresher than most goosebumps books out there considering there’s no monsters, ghosts, or anything supernatural going on. After reading, I’m at a hard confidence this story is the most likely story to ever happen in goosebumps if we are comparing it to real life events. Not to mention, the main character is a fish out of water just wanting a new lease on life after his former experience in his old neighborhood left him with a tattered reputation and a bruised ego with a lack of confidence. So how does the story play out for him? I’ll get into that.

The main character is suffering from self-esteem issues being the new kid in a part of town not too far away from his old neighborhood, but far enough away he gets to attend a new school. He sees something horrifying happen involving a moving car which he then springs to action to try to do the right thing. But considering he isn’t extraordinary, it is difficult to achieve this act. He eventually stops the car due to dumb luck and the onlookers cheer him on. That’s when he meets a group of kids which play into the rest of the story. The girl in the group is absolutely smitten by him (and she is hilarious throughout this read) which catches the attention of the boys in the group. The boys suspect something about our main character but wait until another courageous but accidental act happens to put him to the test, to really see if the main character ISNT scared of anything.

The boys first test our main character with a spider jar scene (basically the same thing we saw in You Can’t Scare Me!) but it was done equally as unnerving here. After that got the main character out of hot water, the fan girl who follows him blindly gets him in more trouble upping the stakes even further. The boys set up this elaborate facade at this funeral parlor owned by one of their parents in which the main character can’t really back out of since he’s gone in too deep by this point. We then get a few more wholesome scenes dealing with the characters inner monologue and the fears of being where he was before he moved to his new neighborhood.

Then comes the night of the second test of the main character and he is essentially scared by a corpse. I know, it’s terrifying. But he doesn’t show how scared he is to the others. By some stroke of luck, he makes it out of the test with the boys wanting to “double or nothing” the test. Essentially, telling him to come back to the funeral parlor one more time for the FINAL TEST.

Before the final test, the main character sees one of the bullies being messed with by their older brother. Being egged on by his fan girl yet again, the main character accidentally humiliates the boy’s older brother, to which the boy is thankful and indebted to him for his courageous act. Just the main character doesn’t know it yet.

It reaches a point where the main character wants to end this charade about who he is perceived to be to the others because he’s gotten to the point it just isn’t worth it to him anymore to be subjected to these hazings. He basically spills the beans to his fan girl, and in her naivety (I guess it’s rather sweet) doesn’t believe him and says that he is still the greatest. Feeling bummed he couldn’t convince her, he receives a call from the boy he saved earlier giving him a heads up of what’s to come in the FINAL TEST.

Which brings us to the FINAL TEST, where the main character, fan girl, and bully boys meet up at the funeral parlor one last time. The main character does what is requested of him, hide inside of a coffin with a dead body. But according to him the body was alive. The others don’t believe him, that’s until a band of corpses appear out of the woodwork and people start scattering like bugs.

I won’t spoil you for the twist, but let’s just say the main character had a leg up for the FINAL TEST that not only got them off of his back, but also getting a little payback in the process. And just before we thought it was over, another twist happens that may have gotten someone else paid back as well. The true ending is happy for the main character, with one final honest bit of monologue before the story fades to black.

Overall, this book is to me a perfectly conceived idea that comes off as a necessary rehash of a not so cool idea that was the book You Can’t Scare Me!. It literally improves everything wrong with that book, down to the perspective change of the real protagonists to amplifying the relatability and tension. And also removing the monster bit that came at the eleventh hour by just making a blanket rule for this book to be “no monsters and nothing supernatural”. The main character felt honestly written, and as a reader you feel compelled to root for his desired success at a new life. The scenes in this book (the tests I should say) are super creepy and eerie which proves effective in the horror department. And nothing was too over the top or anything typical in the Series 2000 era like unnecessary gross out or violence or anything of that nature. This book also had this layer of monologue seeing the irritation coming from his doubters and number one fan which add a level of irony and humor to the book. Making it one of the funnier and lighthearted books at the same time. I laughed at least a dozen times will reading this book. My main takeaway from this story is that the main character got what they wanted by the end with no strings left attached to his reputation. Which is amazing to think about since often, society likes to commonly place the fish out of water into hard knocks before they get what they want by the end. But the main character in this story took hard knocks and pretended it was a cake walk for self-preservation. He didn’t want to be popular, or have a bunch of friends. He just wanted people to notice him and notice him enough to where he wasn’t going to be picked on for being scared of everything (in reality). All in all, feels like a better conceived coming of age story a kin to the 2002 comedy movie The New Guy. Except, this isn’t a raunchy teen comedy movie lol. It’s a Goosebumps book.

I’d say this book is in my permanent top ten of the franchise, and currently rests in my Holy Trinity of Goosebumps books (my top 3). I have nothing but positives to say and would honestly change absolutely nothing about the book. It was a justified remake/rehash with a bit of heart in touch with realism and really was scary in a realistic way that goosebumps doesn’t try too often. This book gets a 5 out 5 ⭐️’s for being amazing and I HIGHLY recommend trying this book if you haven’t read it before.

Die Mutproben zu denen er herausgefordert wird, werden immer heftiger und der Druck auf ihn steigt immer mehr.

Altersempfehlung: 10-12 Jahre

Themen: Angstüberwindung. Zu den Gefühlen stehen, auch wenn diese Angst sind und man sich fürchtet, verspottet zu werden.

Mein Eindruck: Dies ist mein erstes Buch von R. L. Stine und ich bin begeistert! Das Buch fängst schon spannend an und dieser Spannungsbogen, zieht sich über die gesamte Geschichte. Ich hatte mit Spuk gerechnet und wurde mehr als überrascht. Fast jeder von uns kennt solche Leute, wie eine Amy ist, die einen zu Dingen anstiften, die man nicht tun möchte. Wer ist noch nicht in die Situation gekommen, in der man sich entscheiden muss, sich dem Gruppendruck zu beugen oder gegen den Strom zu schwimmen? Die geforderten Mutproben waren schon ziemlich heftig und gruselig. Ich konnte mich jedenfalls sehr gut in Craig einfühlen und weiß, wie schwierig es sein kann, sich aus einer Rolle zu befreien, die man nicht (mehr) erfüllen möchte. Ganz begeistert bin ich von dem Ende der Geschichte, ich war völlig überrascht und freue mich sehr auf mein nächstes Buch mit Gänsehaut-Feeling.

Wem empfehlen: Jedem der sich ein wenig gruseln möchte und einer kreativen Story nicht widerstehen können.

Are You Terrified Yet?
Craig Morganstern is 12 and has just moved to Middle View. He sees this as the perfect opportunity to reinvent himself from who the kids at his school once called C-C-C-Craig because he stuttered from being scared of everything.

On the first day of school, Craig is riding his bike to school and crashes into a rock. He then notices a car rolling down the street with a baby screaming in the back. The car has no driver. Craig catches up to the car and tries to reach out for the door handle but misses. A red-haired woman is screaming “My baby! My baby!” Craig reaches for the handle again but misses. He finally gets inside the car and presses his foot down on the brake. There’s a hard jolt. The baby stops crying. Craig’s forehead bumps into the windshield and he passes out briefly.

When he comes to the woman tells him that was the bravest thing she’s ever seen. The red-haired woman says she went to mail a letter and didn’t notice the car rolling away. She gushes over him to the crowd. Craig doesn’t think it was all that brave, It was just an accident, but he says nothing. It’s his big chance n to ditch his old repuation.

A girl with dark hair named Amy introduces herself and then him to Travis and Brad. They ask him is he always this brave. He says yes. It keeps him from getting bored. At school, cute girls stare at Craig and smile. Teachers give him the thumbs up. He can see that Amy admires him, but Travis and Brad aren’t impressed. Travis tells him he wants him to prove he’s brave, help Brad beat up his big brother (whose shoving Brad into a locker).

Craig says he just Brad just needs to stand up to his brother. Amy tells him this, and he asks if Craig wants to help him do this. Craig is like uhhh.. After school, Amy asks Craig to help her. A little girl’s brother is stuck in a tree. He climbed the tree; now he can’t get down. Amy tells the girl Craig is a “super-hero”. He’ll climb up and bring the little boy down.

A crowd gathers. This puts more pressure on Craig. Craig is scared and tells himself he can’t do this. The little boy is crying out that the tree is about to break. Craig starts to climb the tree, finds the boy, and hoist himself up to the limb where the boy is. He reaches out to grab the boy, but he falls.

Luckily, he slides down the trunk to the ground. The crowd cheers. Craig hears the tree start to crack under him. He’s able to grab a limb, falls to the ground, then passes out. When he comes to he’s disoriented and still holding the bird’s nest.

Craig hears Amy telling the crowd that Craig saved the boy and the bird's nest. Someone in the crowd says he needs to get an award. Travis calls out that Craig isn’t a hero. He’s a phony (to the shock of the crowd). He says the kid fell out of the tree. Travis and Brad turn to Craig. Craig says what he did was no big deal. Amy tells Travis and Brad they’re just jealous. They use to get all the attention before Craig arrived.

Amy dares them to challenge Craig. Craig tries to protest. Amy says they’ll bet any amount of money they can’t scare Craig no matter what they try. They agree to the bet. On a gray Saturday, and Craig are hanging out. Amy wants to explore the attic, but Craig says no. So, Amy suggests watching Killer Day Camp. Minutes in Craig starts to scream.

Amy just thinks it's cool and agrees that it’s more fun to scream along with the movie. So, they watch the movie and scream their heads off. Travis, Brad, and three other kids come by. Their names are Frankie and Gus. They call him C C C Craig. One of them’s cousin’s went to his old school and told him about him.

He tells them it’s a dumb story that’s not true. They say they have a test for him. David has brought a glass jar with a soldier inside. Dozens of them. Travis says all he has to do is keep his hand in there for 5 minutes. They bet 30.00.

With a minute to go, Craig decides no more. He goes to jerk his hand out, and discovers it's stuck. They start to bite him. He struggles to get his hand out, but it won’t come out. Eventually the time runs out, and they have to admit he’s won. Amy tells them to try harder next time. Travis promises they won’t.

Craig pleads with Amy after they leave to help him get the jar off. She does. His hand is now red, itching, and throbbing. A week later, Craig is back over Amy’s. Amy wants to go down to the basement to play table tennis. It's dark going down the steps, and Craig confesses to Amy he’s scared of “basements” (not the dark).

He makes up this story about when he was younger, how his mom left him alone in the basement and mice came out and stared at him. Amy says he’s brave for telling her the story.

Travis, Brad, and the others come over to challenge Craig again. Amy says they’re bringing a big, poisonous snake and they want Craig to kiss it on the mouth. Before he can confess to Amy no way he’s doing that, he hears the other guys pleading on the other side of the door to please help them.

Travis says they had a big snake, but it got away. He fell (trying to chase it?) and poked his eyeball out. Craig takes the eyeball from his hand and pops it in his mouth. Travis gives the next challenge. His dad owns a funneral parlor.

At school, Craig sees Grant bullying Brad. Amy pushes him to go intervene and shoves her in their direction. Grant has again shoved his brother into the locker. Craig accidentally trips Grant and falls on top of him. Everyone cheers. Brad gives him praise (as does everyone else). Craig realizes that maybe it’s not what he thinks of himself its what he does that makes him brave.

Craig overhears Travis and Brad talking. Brad says it's going too far. Travis says he’s still doing it. They all meet at the Shady Rest Funeral Parlor. Brad tells him to go in through the back window. He tells him to open one of the coffins and climb in.

Two men pull up, get out, and deliver someone in a body bag. The kids hide in the hedges. David taunts Craig and asks if he wants to quit, but Amy says he’ll go in after they leave. It’s not long before the men leave. Once inside, Craig is told he can’t turn on a light. He trips over something on the floor. Is it a dead body?

He screams. The guys think they’ve won. Amy urges him to continue and lie on top of the corose. Craig realizes he can’t do this. He starts to back away, but a hand reaches out of the coffin and grabs his parka. The corpse pulls him in, sits up, and pulls Craig down.

Craig pulls back and falls on the floor. Before he realizes it, he’s wrestling with it. He grabs its hair and tugs its head off. It’s a rubber mask, and Travis is behind it. Travis is shocked. Craig realizes he has to stop this crazy game. Travis gives one last challenge. He says he’ll meet them back there real soon.

Craig calls Amy and tries to tell her he’s not brave. She then points out all the brave things he’s done. He admits to her that he *was* called C C C Craig because he was a wimp. He says he can’t take the dares anymore, and he wants her to call off the bet.

Amy is silent a minute. Then she tells him he’s the nicest guy she’s ever met. She thinks he’s worried about Brad and Travis losing all that money. But she says no. They deserve to be taught a lesson.

After this, Brad tells him to meet him and Travis at the same place (the funeral parlor). Once they’re there, Travis says they’ll give him a break. All he has to do is give one of the corpses a handshake and a hug (cheek to cheek). He shakes his hand twice. He’s about to hug the corpse when they hear a creak. They look and all the coffins are starting to open.

Hands push up and the corpses start to sit up and groan. All have decayed faces. One has worms coming out of his nostrils More come out of the closet, and they stagger toward them. Travis yells to Craig he wins. Just stop them. All the others make a run for the window and run off. Amy says they can’t leave Craig. Travis says they’ll call the police for him. They take off. Craig waits for half an hour and then walks to Brad’s house. He thanks him for helping him.

He compliments his brother and his friends on being excellent corpses. Brad says never tell Travis. He just thought enough was enough. He feels like he owed him one for helping him with Grant. Grant then comes into the room and apologizes for not being able to make it. He says they showed up but the doors were locked. So, they left and went out for pizza.

Brad says he’s going to puke and flies out of the room. Grant and Brad bursts out laughing. Grant says anytime he can scare his little brother and his creep friends let him know. They have a good laugh over it. Grant has green makeup behind his ear and he left his hand at the funneral home. Craig heads for home. A dog howls but Craig is no longer scared. He just wishes the moon would come out so it wouldn’t be so dark.

Rating: 6 I really liked the parts of this book that took place in the funeral home with the coffins. It made me think of ideas. It was really well written how the corpses rose from the coffins and scared Travis, Amy, and their friends. Very descriptive! Very chilling!

You know what you’re getting with a Goosebumps book, and this one is pretty typical – short, simple writing for kids, kind of scary and full of suspense at the end of each chapter to keep you turning the pages.

Basically, we follow the story of C-C-C-Craig, a scaredy cat kid, as he moves from one school to another and decides to reinvent himself. He doesn’t want to be a scaredy cat any more – he wants to be fearless, and so he pretends to be. But then things start going wrong, and he ends up having to prove he’s not afraid.

Decent book

Craig tidak ingin diejek lagi sebagai penakut di sekolah barunya. Sedikit rasa peduli, rasa tidak enakan, dan keberuntungan membuatnya mendadak jadi pahlawan meski ia sendiri takut melakukan itu. Amy yang mengidolakannya dan enggak peka sering memanas-manasi Geng Travis yang iri dan tahu masa lalunya. Perseteruan tersebut membuatnya terpaksa menjalani tantangan-tantangan yang makin mengerikan.

Penokohan terasa dekat dengan dunia nyata, jadi aku bisa membayangkan mereka dengan sangat mudah dan detail sehingga novelnya terasa menyenangkan dari awal hingga akhir. Aku pun terhibur dengan monolog Craig ketika ia enggak setuju dalam menghadapi tokoh-tokoh lain. Omong-omong, ada beberapa bab terlalu singkat yang menurutku bisa digabung dengan bab lain karena sedang membahas persoalan yang sama.

Ceritanya lebih ke psikologis, jadi terasa fresh untuk serial Goosebumps. Tidak menakutkan, tapi cukup membuat deg-degan. Kover dan kejadian pas di novelnya sama-sama seram dan disturbing, jadi aku merasa tidak diberi harapan palsu yang seringkali terjadi di novel lainnya.

Meski agak membuat gemas, ada penyebab jelas Craig menjadi kayak begitu. Ia adalah korban perundungan yang ingin memperbaiki kelemahannya supaya bisa merasakan hal yang tak pernah terjadi sebelumnya di kehidupannya. Ia pun berbohong keterusan, tidak bisa menolak dengan tegas, dan tidak menghargai dirinya sendiri yang sebenarnya sudah membuat kemajuan dalam menghadapi rasa takut.

Berikutnya soal ulasan terkait "penulis sering menipu pembaca". Kalau di sini sudah jelas-jelas protagonisnya diceritakan sangat penakut, maka ia sering mengkhayalkan hal-hal buruk. Jadi, bisa kumaklumi kalau dia paranoid, lalu memikirkan sesuatu yang ternyata berbeda dari kenyataannya.

Plot twists berturut-turut di akhir novel membuatku sangat puas dan bangga—yang jarang sekali kurasakan ketika membaca novel Goosebumps. Lega sekali karena plot rapi—alias penulis enggak mendadak memasukkan unsur supernatural yang entah datang dari mana.

Tapi, sama seperti biasanya, beliau lagi-lagi membuat beberapa kalimat terakhir terasa menggantung, mungkin dengan niat untuk memberi kesan misterius. Namun, kali ini aku enggak begitu terganggu karena kuanggap mati listrik saja karena akan segera hujan.

Hal yang membuatku sedikit sebal, yaitu para saksi yang salah paham terus padahal mereka seharusnya bisa menyaksikan kejadian itu dengan jelas. Aku sampai mengira Craig memiliki Amy sebagai arwah pelindung karena dia terselamatkan terus. Aku juga sempat mengira sebenarnya Amy dan Geng Travis berkomplot supaya Craig merasa terkhianati karena mereka diam-diam menertawakannya dari belakang.

Craig baru pindah sekolah. Dia bertekad untuk memulai lembaran baru karena di sekolah sebelumnya image yang dia miliki sudah rusak: dia dijuluki C-C-Craig karena terlalu penakut. Harapannya itu terkabul, di hari pertama dia masuk, dia dengan ajaib menyelamatkan nyawa seorang bayi. Dia pun jadi populer dan dijuluki pahlawan pemberani. Namun, ada sekelompok anak yang tahu masa lalu dia dan ingin membuktikan ke orang-orang bahwa Craig penakut dan pengecut dengan tantangan-tantangan kurang ajar dan beneran seram.

Ide buku kali ini bagiku segar banget. Di antara premis yang selalu soal tokoh utama yang mengalami hal horor dan tidak ada yang percaya, premis buku ini unik. Tidak biasanya R. L. Stine baik dengan tokoh utamanya, membuat si tokoh utama dipuja-puja, dan membuat si tokoh utama selalu selamat dari konflik. Aku juga suka akhir buku ini, lagi-lagi double twist.

8/10. Probably the most middle 8/10 I’ll ever give. Good themes, message, plot, characters (for the most part), scares, and refreshing feel without having what a lot of GB books have but in a good way. Amy, however, was annoying even if she carried the book’s plot forward. Half good / half bad. Also really blind by Craig’s fabulous looks or some shit idk. Opening was surreal as heck and I don’t know how to feel about it. The cover was an actual scene in the book, which was cool. Could’ve focused less on the scares.

Only about a hundred more unread Stine books to go.
Want to set the deadline for two weeks but my health isn't helping much nowadays. Will have to push it to a month I guess.

And as for the book, well, Craig is a scaredy little cat, but he doesn't want to back out of a dare. Why? Umm... Because he doesn't want to be bullied in his new school for a change.
But will he be able to keep his pseudo-sangfroidness when the dead start walking?

Reminds me a lot of, You Can't Scare Me from the original series.
Not a bad GB book, but not great, either. It's a formula/plot that has been done many times before (like every GB book) but this one less so than others, so it is a little bit fresh. No monsters or supernatural entities in this book. Just some kids trying to scare each other in this quick, fun read.

This is a very odd different Goosebumps experience. There is no supernatural horror, no killer animatronics or inanimate objects brought to life. It's just a tale about facing your fears and how one cowardly kid sets out to do that despite it being under peer pressure. I liked it still a lot more than I should have. Sometimes different is good.

This book is a masterpiece of a coming-of-age story for kids. It has some dark and disturbing material that pop up involving dares that the MC has to face, has a lotta charm involving the MC and you wanting to root for him, well paced, and much more.

This is a perfect Goosebumps AND kids horror book for me, I'd recommend reading it 100%

It's a repetitive but engaging story. I honestly think this is one of the few Goosebumps books that actually teaches a valuable lesson in what bravery truly. It's also a cautionary tale against partners who never listen to you and pressure you.

Only ended up giving this 3 stars because of the ending. This book is kind of a reverse version of You Can't Scare Me and it nearly even ends the same, nearly.
Also Amy, the main characters side character, was the absolute worst in this. She's even worse then Travis and the rest.

This is quite real. Situations, described in this story, can happen to everyone. Despite some creepy situations, the main character has to face, we can watch an evolution of the boy's courage. He did his best just to make other guys think he feared nothing, and he also didn't wanna let down his new friend. Of course, he was afraid of everything, but he managed to overcome himself and his fear. To my mind, this book is good and it may even inspire readers to be braver. Personally, I liked it!

- The protagonist goes to a new school to live a new life where no one knows how scared he is. Through a series of lucky encounters and an overtly domineering female, goes through a series a
bets where other characters try to put him in spooky situations, all of which are not at all scary. Stine tries to throw some horror in the situations but fails awfully short.
