A quirky artist must unravel her parent's secret past before the mob erases her future. But will the protection of a handsome homicide detective be her only hope of surviving the Big Easy?

Nell Whitby is starting over in New Orleans, getting a publisher for her children’s book, sketching tourists in the French Quarter, and leaving the tragic death of her parents behind. When a handsome detective asks her for a date, her fresh start seems perfect…until a dangerous family secret bubbles up from the past and puts her life in jeopardy.

The oldest of thirteen children, detective Alex Baker has two goals in life: solve murders and avoid anyone under the age of ten. That is, until the day the quirky children's book author foils a carjacking, becomes a target for the mob, and makes his libido sit up and reconsider the whole no-kids thing. If he doesn’t protect her, she’ll be the next body to turn up in his homicide investigation.

As bullets start to fly, Nell can’t resist her sexy bodyguard or ignore her past, and Alex must protect the irresistible kid-magnet who has them both in the crosshairs.

4/5; 4 stars; A-

Its been awhile since I read a book by Pauline Baird Jones and it was great to refresh my memory on what makes this woman an absolute delight to read. Her books are funny and light, but not lightweight. There is skill and experience evident in how she builds her characters, describes their world, plots the story and takes the reader along for a great ride.

In Relatively Risky, Nell, the heroine is a quirky, artistic individual, yet at the same time she has her feet on the ground and possesses a cool intelligence that allows her to keep her wits about her in trying situations. She meets an off duty cop who gets sucked into the mystery of her life when someone tries to kill her.

Nell has this really funny compulsion to turn people to vegetables in her mind. As an artist, she want to draw people represented by whatever vegetable they remind her of. In fact, she has had some success and published a children's book, featuring Alfonse the Artichoke. I can relate to this completely because for years I've seen people superimposed on what dog breed they remind me of. (I don't have any artistic ability so thankfully these visions stay in my head!)

At one point in the story, a suave womanizing mobster has a meeting with Nell, and while his inner dialogue is all about how much she must be swooning over him, her inner dialogue is all about getting her sketchpad so she can draw him as a rutabaga! The way the author tell the story had me laughing out loud on several occasions.

This story is the first in a series but it could stand on its own too. However, I don't want to stop with this one. I'm am so curious to find out where Pauline Baird Jones is going to take this story. Looking forward to book 2.

Just finished reading 'Relatively Risky' book 1 of the "The Big Uneasy" series by Pauline & I can honestly say that I really enjoyed this book. Although at first I found it hard to relate to the lead female, which then made it hard to get into the book... I actually put this down for a few days before jumping back in. (Note to self, don't read too many of the same genre in 1 hit). After my little break I was able to focus & get into the book alot easier. I soon found myself lost within the story... I was lost in the visuals given to me by the author, laughing in some parts... also I sepnt most of the book trying to figure out who was trying to kill Nell??... what possible information her parents left?? if they left any.... Would Alex kiss Nell?? soo many questions roaming my head.

The depth of infomation given throughout the book, helps with the depth of the plot & characters. Pauline's attention to detail made it easy to not get mixed up with all that was going on & painted such a vivid picture throughout the book. Making things easy to remember but also get lost within. I can't wait to read what comes next in the series.

This was a very enjoyable book. It had murder, mystery, suspense and romance. Oh, and a bit of humor to make it a fun read. The author has a great way of describing people and I liked the characters. I felt as if I could see her drawings of the vegetable people! :)

Since this is the first book that I have read by Pauline Baird Jones, I am looking forward to reading more of her books. I am grateful that I have found a new author who has a terrific writing style!

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Nell and Alex meet quite by chance and through a her assisting/rescuing him from an attempted carjacking.

The beginning was a bit confusing due to the amount of information, familial relationships, and plot basics to establish. However, the depth of information does help to explain the characters and plot.

The plot is mufti-layered, and good attention to detail helps keep the story quickly flowing. Real-to-life, not all are likeable, characters fill the story.

Overall, definitely an entertaining read.

What a fun read! Pauline did a great job of capturing the feel of the city of New Orleans. I left there six years ago but reading her description of the Quarter and the air and the smells took me right back there. If you like books with a lot of action and a dash of romance, and that will keep you guessing until she cleverly reveals the answers, this is the book for you. I look forward to reading the next story in the series.

This character driven mystery is engaging, quirky, funny, and suspenseful by turns. The mystery is intriguing and unpredictable and romance develops along believable lines, for the most part. Given that the story takes place in a matter of days, it was refreshing that the author didn't try to shoe-horn in some adult content. I did find it challenging to believe that a librarian in her late twenties--living in New Orleans for 2 years--would be quite so inexperienced with men. That said, I'm eager to see what happens in the next book.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Relatively Risky, The Big Uneasy Book 1 by Pauline Baird Jones. I had read a short story by this author a few years ago and thought it was an okay story. However, this novel is very, very good. The story deals with two people, Nell and Alex, who are opposites but are attracted to each other. It involves surprises and secrets, only children verses a dozen siblings, along with police families and the mob families.

As I read, I began to care for the two characters and through their eyes was able to experience some of the unique flavor of New Orleans. Besides the good writing, character development and sense of setting that I found while reading this book I loved how Ms. Jones could turn a phrase. Just one example is when Nell thinks about when she was younger how she wanted to fly to the moon or at least fly the coop. A wonderful way with words!
Also I found that Relatively Risky had a profound thought. After several attempts on Nell's life, Alex is driving Nell home. Nell is watching Alex; (quoting the book) "She let her gaze trail over him as he started to put his cell away. He was a good man. Some women liked bad boys, thought good was boring. Now, more than ever, Nell was grateful he was good. He wasn't at all boring." I believe Nell is right, good men trump bad boys every time, she just said much better than I ever could have.

Relatively Risky is titled Book 1 so I can hardly wait for the next, since I enjoyed this one so much. I hope all 12 of Alex's brothers and sisters get a chance to have their own story told. Though I am really hoping Alex's brother, Ben, is next. He is another non-boring good man who is introduced in Relatively Risky, that I would like to read more about.

I won this book through a free giveaway at Goodreads.com. By the number of pages in the book, you think it's going to take a long while to read, but it doesn't. The story is really engaging and keeps you wanting to know more than the characters are willing to tell or investigate. I found myself coming back to the book time and again to snatch a few more pages whenever I had a free moment.

The first in a series, Jones sets the groundwork in this book. I was concerned that it would be a simple information dump with some romance sprinkled here or there. In all honesty, it was a really well-woven story that gave just enough information as necessary at the appropriate time. Not all the answers are given by the end of the book - hence the series. But it does give a satisfying conclusion to many of the questions we, the readers, have at the beginning.

Though there is some romantic moments in the story, they add to the story and not overwhelm it. There is a progression of emotions and feelings by those involved that does lend a realistic feeling to the characters. I couldn't help but chuckle as one or more of the characters were increasingly frustrated by events beyond their control. Not entirely in the romance department either. Each character had his or her own life within the pages and it made for an enjoyable read.

Despite taking a step out of my reading comfort zone, I really enjoyed the blend of romance and mystery/suspense within this book. I want to know more about the power struggle within the city - on both sides of the law - as well as what happens to some of the characters I grew to like. If you're looking for an exciting and quirky ride through New Orleans, pick up this book!

When artist/children’s book author Nell Whitby slams her bike into the perpetrator trying to steal New Orleans Detective Alex Baker’s truck, she sets off a chain of events that leads to danger for both of them. Nell is a misplaced librarian who moved from Wyoming to New Orleans after her parents’ death and works for her best friend’s catering company while trying to get her writing career off the ground. Unaware she is related to two families of a mafia trifecta active in New Orleans for years, Nell is the last person to speak to her mobster grandfather before he is killed. Her life as she knows it comes crashing down around her when she learns this and that her parents were the offspring of two of the mafia families. Alex, trying his best to protect a woman he likes more than he wants to, begins to wonder what his father, a retired cop, and his former partner are hiding from him. As Alex and Nell dodge bullets and thugs trying to kidnap Nell, the chemistry between them jumps into high gear and it’s all Alex can do to keep himself and Nell alive.

This author’s writing style is unique: a strong dose of noir balanced with humor and witty dialogue. The plot moves at a fast pace as does the chemistry between Alex and Nell. The characters are well-developed and likeable, the relationship between Alex and his 12 siblings fun, and the New Orleans ambiance conveyed so realistically the reader will feel as if they have been plopped down right in the middle of the Big Easy.

The Big Uneasy Relatively Risky is about Nell Whitby and Alex Baker. Nell is an illustrator/librarian who has lived an ordinary life until she meets Alex Baker. Alex Baker is the oldest of 13 brothers and sisters. He also happens to be a New Orleans Police Officer. They have an unlikely meeting one night in New Orleans that changes both of their lives forever.

This started out to be a difficult book to read. The first 25 percent of the book seemed to have a bunch of information piled in that made the mystery surrounding Nell Whitby hard to follow. Luckily, I powered through and was able to get to a point where I could follow along easily. The mystery is actually rather interesting. It surrounds the true identity of Nell’s parents. She grew up in Wyoming and had no idea that her now deceased parents had their roots in The Big Easy where she has lived for the past two years.

Of course, there is some chemistry between her and Alex Baker but it isn’t as pronounced as I have seen in other romantic suspense novels. The book focuses most of it’s attention on a mafia family and its many secrets. There is plenty of action and intrigue once you get past the convoluted backstory. Since there is so much mystery, I can’t give much details about the book itself. I will say that if there is a sequel, I would read it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook version of Relatively Risky by Pauline Baird Jones. It was funny and fast paced, with a little romance.

I love how the sights, sounds and culture of New Orleans are ingrained into Relatively Risky. I've always like the city. Reading Ms. Jones' books set in the Big Easy always make me want to visit again.

Ms. Jones' scifi/romance books are among my favorites, so I am familiar with her style. Her written voice is humorous, insightful, and very accessible. The main characters are charming, made so with witty dialog. This is a book with lots of action, so whether you are reading or listening, you will be done with the book before you know it.

Relatively Easy is book one in The Big Uneasy series. Dead Spaces, book 2, was just released. I've put it on my TBR list, but I think I will wait for the audiobook.

Good book, first one I have read from this author. Finished it in three days. A little of a slow start, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. Her book mixes suspense with humor and the great town of New Orleans what a wonderful result!

Alex Baker, NOPD Homicide detective, was on his way home after a long night shift, had finally found a parking space, went to get out of his car, and had a gun pressed to his back! He couldn’t believe he was getting jacked or that an unlikely female on a bike was about to ram her bike into the perp! This was the first tumble of three that Nell Whitby was to experience over two days - talk about an aching body. The only good part was meeting the handsome cop, Alex. Nell had recently moved from Wyoming to New Orleans after the death of her parents, and was staying with her college roommate Sarah, helping out at her Blue Bayou Catering and sketching in her portfolio, her favorite thing in life to do. But something very strange was going on. I love Nell’s wry, funny and slightly crazy way of thinking, her mind automatically turning the people she sees and meets into vegetables with faces! It seems her parents might have kept a few secrets from her, secrets that were now coming dangerously to life! This is a fun, cozy mystery that I couldn’t put down with constant excitement and even a little romance. What a great book. I received a free copy from the author and am chomping at the bit to read the next one!

Blurb does the job of telling you the story.

This is my second book in this series since I received book 4 first. Good introduction to the series. Easily read as a stand alone book.

Says romantic suspense but still think could pass for cozy mystery genre also.

I didn't give it five stars for several reasons: one being a bit cliché for mobster related, second the use of wise. It confused me for a bit, was thinking wise as in being smart. Author uses it in the book for shortcut of "wise guys" m for better clarification mobster term. Might have been less confusing if had put it in single quotes like 'wise'.

I know being picky but as you can see I read a lot and an issue like that in a book should not be.

Do not get me wrong. I love the two books in this series I have read. I think they are fun, enjoyable read. Quick easy and nice little escapes for a few hours it takes to read them. I do recommend them.

Remember this is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

Our heroine thwarts a car jacking in progress and attracts the wrong kind of attention. As it turns out, there is a lot more to it than is apparent on the surface. Hopefully our hero can help her get through the resulting mayhem.

This is book one of the series, a surprisingly good place to start.

This story is set in New Orleans, which alone should tell you there are going to be some quirky elements to it. But it doesn't stop there as the cast of characters and an odd, and sometimes funny, bunch as well. The story itself is somewhere between a cozy mystery and a romantic suspense story, which gives it a fast paced plot full of twists and turns as well as some action and romance. It is a heady mix, but I really enjoyed it and I am definitely looking forward to more in this series.

Highly recommended.

Nell thought she was a pretty unremarkable young woman who grew up in a remote part of Wyoming. Dad a mechanic, mom a checker at Walmart- both fatalities due to a drunk driver two years ago.

Her fresh start in New Orleans with her college roommate allows not only her artistic talents to bloom, it reveals depths and twists to her family tree she could have little dreamed.

A bicycle rescue by her of NOPD homicide detective Alex Baker entangles both of them, his crazy big Baked family, her unexpected one, and her soul sister Sarah in Cosa Nostra type drama

Humorous and deadly serious romance and family adventure

Thoroughly enjoyable story of murder and mayhem in New Orleans. So much mayhem, in fact, that I have no idea of the final body count of murders. And there are some threads left dangling to draw us into reading follow-up books in the series. I'm looking forward to them!

Well-written and mostly well-edited. The characters are fun and likeable (on the good side) and interestingly sinister (on the bad side).

This was the first of Pauline Baird Jones' books that I've read, and as soon as I finished it, I bought 2 more books in the series. I guess that means I enjoyed it!

This is worth reading!!

It starts out slow. ( I like action by page 3.) But stick it out cuz it gets better and better. Nell gets into one pickle after another with the mob while Alex, the cop, being right there with her, gets her out every time. They have many different ways of getting to know each other with bullets flying, goons killing each other for their mob bosses, or Alex's family getting in the middle of everything (all being law enforcement).
This book is a great for light reading and tho the beginning is slow, well worth the wait ( not long). It will keep you reading to the end!

When Nell rides to the rescue of Alex Baker, she doesn’t realize that it’s the beginning of a relatively risky relationship.
Nell’s family seem to be holding some secrets, while Alex’s family is just huge...

This amusing cozy mystery is both action packed, as well as being rather funny.
I’m still smiling at the thought of Zach as a Zucchini 😂
The Baker family is intriguing, the other characters are interesting, and if it doesn’t exactly end with a happily ever after, it does end with a potential HEA in the future!
If you enjoy cozy mysteries, especially ones set in New Orleans, then this is a fun one to read.

This is only 2nd book by this author I have read and really like it! Don't know how I missed her for so long. Nell our heroine grew up in Wyoming with wonderful loving of parents. After they are killed by drunk driver she moves to New Orleans to be with her best friend. Her life goes upside down when she saves a guy getting robbed by running into the robber with her bicycle.
Turns out guy she saved is a cop, a cute cop from a large, extra large family who are all involved in law community. She then garners the attention of the Mafia. This was just so much fun, sweet, with lots of adventure and excitement. For a cozy I loved it.

Am I the only one who hates when a narrator doesn't even try to find out the correct pronunciations of words? Its not bag-net. It's been-yay. (Beignet) Otherwise this wasn't too bad. I mean they butchered Metarie too but what are you going to do? The story was okay. The main issue I had with this was that everyone was "wise" from "wise guys" to "wise geezers" to "wise Kids" and it was a bit off putting. Not only because I read a lot of true crime and I know no one says that but also because I live close enough to NO and I've never heard that in my life. Maybe I'm being too harsh and I'd have liked this a lot more if it weren't the audiobook? Idk.

I started the second one but it was so robotic i stopped after chapter one.

What a fantastic story but I’m not going to give any spoilers because really the blurb says it all, fantastic characters and storyline I even had a chuckle and I enjoyed Nell’s and Alex’s story and wow 13 brothers and sisters that’s crazy. It’s a murder mystery with action, suspense, intrigue, twists and turns and a touch of romance and so much more to keep you entertained and turning the pages, this is a fantastic story and I recommend this book.

Alex, a cop is being hijacked and Nell comes to his rescue and saves him and his vehicle. Alex is one of twelve children, known as the Bakers, all who are in the legal department in some way. Throw in the mob and you have plenty of things to read and laugh about. This is the second book I have read in this series and plan to read more. Very captivating and plenty of action.
