Jenny Wales is a local television star who has everything she needs: good friends, a great career, and a gorgeous apartment with an outstanding shower. The only thing missing in her life is love, something that she hasn’t made time for in her quest to be the best reporter in town.
An international soccer star, Paolo Gutierrez is a reluctant celebrity looking for a quieter life away from the glitz and glamour of Europe. He longs for chance to remember the game he loves and build a life for himself far from the paparazzi’s lens.
When Jenny and Paolo meet, it’s love at first sight. It should be a simple story of boy meets girl, but the team, the town, and the entire world seem to have an opinion on their love affair. Up against a losing streak, Victoria Beckham wannabes, and the risk of losing their careers, Jenny and Paolo will have to fight to win this game of love.
What did I think: This story was sweet, silly and light hearted. Just a cute feel good book.
Both Jenny and Paola were great together. There were no games with this couple. It was refreshing to see an adult couple act like adults in a relationship. Jenny flirted and told Paolo what she thought of him. Even asked him “out” more or less, but it did not feel like she was desperate. She was just very straight forward with her feelings. Very confident, but not standoffish. Paolo even though he was an attractive, popular soccer star always made Jenny feel like she was the hottest girl he had ever met even though he had women coming on to him.
Did I feel connected to the characters? Yes, I liked them a lot. Everyone needs a BFF like Rocky.
Pace of the Story: Good, the story moved along at a good pace.
Positives: Jenny’s personality was hilarious. Her honesty and the nicknames she gave Rocky and Paola. I love the way Paolo and Jenny met. I love when couples meet at a party, complete strangers, with the other not knowing who the other is.
Negatives: I thought that the story could have done without the Dora scenes. The story starts with Dora watching news. I know they were meant to be cute, but I just found her slightly annoying. I was worried that the whole book was going to be like that, but it wasn’t.
Do I recommend? Yes
Bottom Line: Glad I read it. It was a light read, just what I needed.
Book Format Read: A copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first read of Bellamy Black's so I didn't know what to expect. It was nice to read a story that ran smoothly regarding a soccer player and a reporter. This book had me laughing so hard--oh that Ms. Dora C!! The banter between Jenny and her friends (Rocky & Niecey) was hilarious. Paolo sounds sexy and sweet and his athletic build sounds dreamy. His journey with Jenny comes with its own speed bumps but their drive to fight for what makes them happy shows much passion. There were quite a few fast forward moments throughout the book where I wish we could've gotten more depth or follow through in certain situations. I appreciated the focus on the present tense but feel I could've connected more with the characters had we received more depth from their histories that built them to who they are today. But as mentioned earlier, I enjoyed this book and it made me laugh A LOT, which I loved! Give it a try!
