Alcander is a young prince who lives in the city of Silver Fir, which is being plagued by continuous winter for two decades. Though he's a generous and patriotic young man, he is disliked by the commoners, who see him as nothing more than the son of the land's tyrannical queen, Charna.
When he discovers a secret about his past, he reconsiders everything he knew so far and he sets forth on an epic quest in order find the source of the evil plague and save his homeland. He comes across deadly enemies and he experiences love, loss and treason. However, the greatest milestone of this quest is a powerful dragon, who will change his fate forever.
Alcander isn’t prepared to face the massive changes which are about to happen in his life, but the strength hiding in his heart will keep his hope alive.

About the author

Marilena Mexi was born in 1986 and lives in Athens, Greece. She studied graphic design and illustration in Akto of Middlesex University - Athens, and she has been working as an illustrator for the past few years for book publishers – magazines and fantasy board and card games. She is also an awarded illustrator from various CG community sites, and she has been featured in a few magazines from around the world. Her artwork reflects her own personality; it is emotional, romantic and dreamy, and it can touch the viewer’s soul.In her spare time she likes reading books and listening to symphonic metal music.
Her love for books led her write her own which she illustrated, too. This process has been very time-consuming and difficult, but it also was a journey to the land of dreams. ‘Antara’ is her first illustrated novel, and it includes 26 illustrations,'Ninemia' is her second book and sequel of 'Antara' and includes 15 illustrations.'Deerward' is her third high-fantasy novel for new adults.

The story was captivating and frankly quite epic.
There is a blend of darkness and innocence; depth yet simplicity in M.Mexi's writing.
I also enjoyed her first two novels Antara and Ninemia, but this is even more relevant to my interests, so I'd pick this as my favorite so far.
Looking forward to her next novel!

Το Deerward είναι το τρίτο μυθιστόρημα φαντασίας της συγγραφέα και εικονογράφου Μαριλένας Μέξη την οποία γνωρίσαμε από τη δυλογία Antara και Ninemia που κυκλοφόρησαν γραμμένα στην αγγλική γλώσσα. Κι ενώ στα πρώτα της βιβλία η Μαριλένα μας διηγήθηκε μια ιστορία που εξελίσσεται σε έναν μαγικό υδάτινο κόσμο γεμάτο με γοργόνες, στο νέο της βιβλίο ανεβαίνει υψόμετρο και μας πάει στο χιονισμένο βασίλειο του Ασημένιου Έλατου, στη δασική Καλανθία και στην ορεινή Ναστούσια, το βουνό των Δράκων. Παρόλο που υπάρχουν πολλά κοινά μεταξύ του Deerward και της δυλογία των Γοργόνων (ένα από τα οποία είναι η αφήγηση σε πρώτο πρόσωπο) η ιστορία ξεχωρίζει για τον δυναμικό της πρωταγωνιστή, τον νεαρό πρίγκιπα Άλκαντερ που μέσα από το περιπετειώδες ταξίδι του καλείται να αφυπνίσει την ισχυρή δύναμη που κρύβεται μέσα του για να σώσει το βασίλειο του από την τυραννία και να σπάσει το ξόρκι που κρατά παγιδευμένο το Ασημένιο Έλατο. Ο καταπιεσμένος ήρωας προσπαθεί αρχικά να λύσει το μυστήριο της καταγωγής του και στη συνέχεια, κυνηγημένος από τους στρατιώτες της μητριάς του εγκαταλείπει την πατρίδα του αναζητώντας μαζί με τους συντρόφους του τον δράκοντα Βριάρεο. Στην πορεία συναντά την Αβεντία, ένα νεραιδένιο πλάσμα που σχετίζεται τόσο με το μέλλον του Άλκαντερ αλλά και με το παρελθόν του. Όπως καταλαβαίνετε ο έρωτας και η αγάπη είναι δυο κυρίαρχα στοιχεία στην ιστορία του Deerward χωρίς όμως να υπερτερεί του επικού που το χαρακτηρίζει. Και παρόλο που ανήκει στη σφαίρα του high fantasy, η συγγραφέας προτίμησε να μη χρησιμοποιήσει κάθε τι συνηθισμένο που συναντάμε στα δεκάδες μυθιστορήματα του είδους. Γενικά το Deerward παντρεύει με διακριτικό τρόπο το παραμύθι με τη λογοτεχνία του φανταστικού χωρίς να γίνεται ούτε παιδικό ούτε και φλύαρο ενώ η γρήγορη ροή, οι ανατροπές, το μυστήριο και τα συνεχή σκαμπανεβάσματα της ιστορίας, κάνουν το βιβλίο ευκολοδιάβαστο και καθόλου κουραστικό.
Αντίθετα με τα πρώτα δυο βιβλία της Μαριλένας, το Deerward δεν περιέχει εικονογράφηση αν και μπορείτε να βρείτε αρκετές εικόνες της ιστορίας στην προσωπική σελίδα της συγγραφέα. Το βιβλίο είναι κι αυτό γραμμένο στα αγγλικά και εκτός από τα πλεονεκτήματα που αναφέρθηκαν παραπάνω, είναι μια καλή πρόταση για όσους θέλουν να εξασκήσουν τη γλώσσα διαβάζοντας μια ευχάριστη ιστορία φαντασίας. Προτείνεται κυρίως σε έφηβους καθώς και σε όσους φίλους του Φανταστικού που αγαπούν τους δράκους. Άλλωστε, όπως μας διδάσκει η ιστορία του Άλκαντερ, η πάλη ενάντια στο κακό δεν κερδίζεται με μαγικά αντικείμενα αλλά από τη φλόγα που έχουμε κρυμμένη μέσα μας.

I won Deerward on Goodreads First Reads and I was very excited to start reading it. Specifically because this sounded like the sort of fantasy book that would drag me to a whole different world.

However, despite being a nice read, it lacked depth and the pace was so fast I lost most of the characters development. Not to mention the romance which was as quick as lightning.

If this story, the story of Alcander and his journey to save Silver Fir from its endless winter and evil queen, had been written in several books – say, a trilogy – maybe it would have worked wonders for me. But as 154 page book, I felt the story flashed before my eyes.

Though the story was gripping and the whole plot interesting enough, the fact that it took only that amount of pages to tell the story of Alcander’s life was the main issue for me.

I enjoyed the world that Marilena Mexi created and the characters within this book. But I feel that the world was still blooming and that we didn’t saw the true potential of it all. And, again, I blame the shortness of the story.

Still, this was a nice and quick fantasy book that surely took me to a different world where dragons, witches, monsters and romance dwell.
