About the author

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as one of the prominent literary figures ever existed in india. He was a legend in Kerala.

He was one of those outspoken figures who revolutionized Malayalam Literature, and Thus the World Literature itself with his dauntless sarcasm, satire, and black humor.

Often referred to as the Beypore Sultan (the king of Beypore) by the colleagues, he was one of the prominent figures behind the artistical, economical, and social reformation of the Kerala Culture.

His novel Shabdangal (The Voices) was once banned due to its echo that cyclonized a once feudalistic society.

He is also regarded as the translators nightmare. This is mainly because of the colloquial touch he added to his writings, which ethnically speaking would lose its humor and meaning when translated to other languages.

He was the sufi among the writers and and the greatest exponent of Gandhian Thought.

He was awarded with Padma Sri in 1982 for his overall contributions to nation as a freedom fighter, writer, and as a political activist.

The Sultan of Beypore was is and will always be the man who exists in all the times. He was a man who was ahead of his time, was a maestro in his time and will be revered by humans till the end of time. And few can claim such things about an author. He is the pride of every Keralite!

For my non keralite friends, you will that his translations are quite difficult to come across. He is the nightmare of every translator. He uses the satire and dark humour so effectively in Malayalam that it is very difficult, almost humanly impossible to translate it into another language without losing its charm.

This book is a collection of 3 stories. Even though the stories are short, the contents speaks volume. This stories are relevant even in our times even though the book was published in the 1940s. This stories are narrated in the typical humorous way seen in all the authors book. The satire is self evident in its execution and humourous in its implications.

Ahem! I couldn't help writing this review, but this was such a great read!

A collection of three distinct stories dealing with three different ideas but the unifying factor is Basheer's language which is taken from our lives itself. The first story speaks of a person who becomes a celebrity due to his extremely long nose and is clearly a satire on the hypocritical stand of media and people on such issues. It is a fun-filled journey where we witness many people taking advantage of him and the people being manipulated by the media.

The second story was more heart-touching than the rest while the third was another funny instance which I think could be inspired from the author's real life incidences(Just a hunch). What is great about the book is the way Basheer uses a few page(32) to bring emotions in the reader's mind with minimum words. His works are the examples for the phrase 'Quality over Quantity'. Anyone who can read Malayalam can easily understand and enjoy this book.

ബഷീർ കഥ എഴുതിയിരുന്ന കാലത്തെ , അതായത് ദശകങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപത്തെ സമൂഹത്തിലെ അല്പത്തരങ്ങളെയും കൊള്ളരുതായ്മകളെയും ചുരുങ്ങിയ വാക്കുകളിൽ ചെറുകഥകളായി തന്റേതായ ഭാഷയിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു . അവയുടെ പ്രസക്തിക്ക് ഇന്നും ഒട്ടും കുറവില്ല എന്നത് അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

രാജ്യത്തിൻറെ നീതിയും മതങ്ങളുടെ നീതിയും കൂടികുഴഞ്ഞൊരു മിശ്രിതമാണ് സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ നീതി ന്യായ വ്യവസ്ഥ. തങ്ങളുടെ ഇഷ്ടങ്ങൾക്കുതകുന്നവയെ അവർ മതത്തിന്റെ കാരണം പറഞ്ഞു കാലാകാലമായി ന്യായീകരിച്ചു പോരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ അവർക്കു പാലിക്കാൻ സൗകര്യമില്ലാത്ത ശരികളിൽ നിന്ന് 'ഭരണഘടനയിൽ ഇല്ലല്ലോ' എന്ന മുട്ടാപ്പോക്കു പറഞ്ഞു സമർത്ഥമായി തലയൂരുന്നു. സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഈ കാപട്യമാണ് ബഷീർ "നീതിന്യായം" എന്ന ചെറുകഥയിൽ വൈകാരികമായി പറഞ്ഞു വെക്കുന്നത്.

I haven't read anything Malayalam in a really long time. Basheer is the man to start with, if you are a dum-dum. I am not saying his material lacks depth. His themes are simple, universal and has a profound depth to it. This book consists of three short stories, each better than the last. I found myself smiling through each line. It has so much charm and heart to it.

(II) Justice (നീതിന്യായം): Despite being the shortest story in the book, the depth of its trenches exceed the palpable perceptions. This is a tale about morality and religion, highlighting the absurd distinction between what deserves a penance in this world, and the world after.

(III) An Old Little Love Story (പഴയ ഒരു കൊച്ചു പ്രേമകഥ): A simple story of a reputed man who works as the chief editor of a local newspaper being infatuated with a woman who turns out to be a servant in a nearby house, unfolding elegantly, as the man pursues her, yearning for her approval.

A very short satire. A take on crowd mentality when faced with something unexpected. How people deem themselves expert on something they don't understand; and then quarrel among themselves for who is the better expert. The story is almost completely narrated; there are only a few conversations.
