वरिष्ठ उपन्यासकार कमलेश्वर का यह उपन्यास एक आदर्श सामाजिक व्यवस्था की वकालत करता है जिसमें अपने बैरियों के लिए भी स्नेह व सम्मान की गुंजाइश हो। इस उपन्यास का कथा-फलक यों तो विस्तृत है लेकिन कमलेश्वर जी ने अपने रचनात्मक कौशल से इसे जिस तरह कम शब्दों में सम्भव किया है,वह काबिले-तारीफ है। इस उपन्यास में स्वाधीनता संघर्षकाल से लेकर सती-प्रथा विरोध तक की अनुगूँजे सुनी जा सकती हैं। इसमें अंग्रेज सिपाहियों की क्रूरता और रूढ़िवादी पारम्परिक समाज में विधवा स्त्री की त्रासद स्थिति का बड़ा ही मार्मिक चित्रण हुआ है जो पाठकों के मन में करुणा का भाव जगाता है। लोकप्रिय रचनाकार की कलम से निकली एक अनूठी कृति।

About the author

Kamleshwar (कमलेश्वर) was a prominent 20th-century Hindi writer, and scriptwriter for Hindi cinema and television. Among his most well- known work are the films Aandhi, Mausam, Chhoti Si Baat and Rang Birangi. He was awarded the 2003 Sahitya Akademi Award for his cult Hindi novel Kitne Pakistan (translated in English as Partitions), and also the Padma Bhushan in 2005.

A simple but good novel. The story looks a bit like a Premchand or Sharatchandra story for some time, but the focus is not absolute on the main character of the story, which is actually a good thing. A good, short read.
