Ice and snow cover Hartfell, cutting off the Lewis family who live high on the moor. Krista and Shining Star fly to the rescue. But will the harsh grip of winter defeat them?
Jenny Oldfield was born in 1949 and brought up in Harrogate, Yorkshire, and studied English at Birmingham University.
She has written a large number of books for both children and adults, including the Home Farm Twins, Animal Alert, and Half Moon Ranch series. A horse enthusiast, many of her novels feature horses and are popular among young horse fans.
This is a short book for young readers about Krista and her magic flying pony Shining Star.
There is not much plot and not much of horse care either, as the main issue is that a heavy snowfall has snowed in the mountain village and Krista has to fly above the blanket of snow to help an isolated family. Without, of course, them seeing that her pony can fly.
The story has its good points and youngsters in warm regions might be interested to learn of the difficulties caused by snow. However I would rather the days when pony books meant youngsters who were resourceful and solved problems the genuine way, rather than doing it by magic, which doesn't teach any life skills.
For a better read for a similar age, I recommend 'My Secret Unicorn - A Special Friend' which I have also reviewed.
Jenny Oldfield has written rather better books for slightly older readers, the Half-Moon Ranch series being a good practical horsey series in the American west, with 'Wild Horses' and 'Rodeo Rocky' being the first two.
I thought this book was really good (even though I'm fourteen, I can appreciate good young children's fiction) but I would like to point out that contrary to when GoodReads thinks, this is actually the forth book in the series!
