Although the obvious selling point of this collection is the ‘raw’ art of Andy Kubert, there is some excellent writing in these pages too. Morrison and Gaiman are as sublime as always. The collection highlights Andy Kuberts art, specifically his uncoloured pencil line art and sometime inks. It’s gorgeous stuff, comic art stripped back to the point of just being art. Some incredible panels in here. Although I do prefer colour work, this format does highlight just how technically gifted Kubert is, and gave me a new appreciation for his art. Highly recommended.
I don't have a lot of negative things to say about this one! The black and white art/unfinished panels aspect of the "Unwrapped" line really appeals to me visually. Lots of the images are incredibly striking when only done in black and white. This particular volume is more of a grab bag of stories though, which can come off as a little disjointed. The beginning is more or less sequential, but the last third or so of the volume comes off as random issues/storylines that aren't related to what came before. Great artwork though!
Not bad. Basically this is several Batman stories re-released but without any coloring. This essentially fives it a very 'noir' feel to the writing but also its a nice rehash into several events in the last decade of the Caped Crusader.
Basically you have "Batman and Son" "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader" and "Damian: Son of Batman" along with a New 52 story.
More or less these stories aren't what you call great. All things considered they could be better.
If nothing else, reading this collection has made me want to pick up Morrison's entire run on Batman, and then follow throufh and read Snyder's and King's as well. Kubert had some absolutely great work showcased in this volume, and I genuinely feel like his partnership with Morrison should have carried over into other titles. Great read, and I'm glad I picked it up on a lark.
