From Longing to Belonging We all fear being left out, being exposed as outsiders. Jesus constantly encountered people―like us―who were longing to belong. Luke himself was an outsider to Jesus’ community, and yet there he found a new family and a new future. In his Gospel, we discover how Jesus responded to people like us. Jesus didn’t simply redraw the lines and create a wider circle. He erased the lines by drawing all people to Himself, no matter their social status. Study Luke’s Gospel and see how God made room―for everyone.

This study is a great 30,000-foot overview of Luke. The questions are fairly superficial, which I actually appreciated because it allowed me to focus more on the book as a whole rather than the specific theological concepts derived from any given passage. Some of the questions, however, did not make sense/required interpretation (i.e. I might be wrong on what the question was asking) and therefore I gave this study four instead of five stars.
One of the most unique aspects of this study is what I would call “Sword-drill questions.” For example, one of the questions in this study was “What have you learned about what a disciple is and does?” The question then goes on to point the reader to 20 or so Scripture passages to assist in answering the question. I really loved this. Often times, I would complete one of these questions and think to myself—“Wow, my heart really needs to be changed in this area. I would characterize myself as having less rather than more of these qualities than are listed here.”
I led a group through The Gospel According to Luke, using this Lifechange study guide from The Navigators. My take away? Jesus proved his credentials as having the authority of God the Father by performing miracles AND declaring people's sins forgiven. What Jesus taught was traveling light and treading lightly. He advocated not considering yourself the star of your own feature film. He advised laying down life, power, money and prestige. He pointed toward a Great Banquet and warned that those who think they have more important things to do will be shut out forever. I was also reminded again how flawed and weak the disciples were, how even when Peter denied Jesus, his master forgave him. It gives us all who follow Jesus hope that we'll be given another chance to do better work for him going forward.
