When Girlfriends #4

When Girlfriends Chase Dreams

Rate this book
A novel about chasing dreams, for better or worse, and living your love story.

Claire Linley is finally a bride! After nearly ten years with her college freshman sweetheart, Claire is going to become Mrs. Conner Whitley. She's got her bridal magazines, is the biggest Martha Stewart fan, and subscribes to all the major wedding blogs. She's been dreaming of this moment for years! How could planning her dream wedding be anything but perfect?

The easy-going and bubbly type, Claire will obviously have a blast planning, and with her fantastic group of girlfriends-made-bridesmaids she just can't go wrong. Whether it's wedding gown shopping, makeup trials, or cake-tasting, Claire's friends are there in a pinch.

But how big does the pinch get? All Claire wants to do is get married, but at every turn something seems to go awry and she's starting to lose it. How is a girl supposed to remain cool and collected when the pricy dream wedding planner isn't turning out to be so dreamy? When DIY projects and the perfect venue are going up in smoke? How is Claire supposed to marry Conner when the special day that's supposed to join them together, forever, is slowly tearing them apart?

This is the charming story about how sometimes the biggest events in life are defined by the smallest acts of kindness and love. It's a love story about dreaming large, loving deeply, and, in the end, truly having the happiest day of your life, no matter what happens (or doesn't). About what happens when girlfriends chase dreams.

The fourth novel in Savannah Page's "When Girlfriends..." series now focuses on Claire Linley. Claire became engaged to her long-time college boyfriend, Conner, in When Girlfriends Make Choices.

Though we haven't had a chance to have her character interacting beyond the girlfriends get together to hang out scenes in the previous novels except for in When Girlfriends Break Hearts. In that novel we find out that Clarie has been pushing Conner to get engaged for a while and that she is closest to Sophie out of the group of friends.

I did like that we got additional details on all of the girls. I still want more details on Jackie though. I feel out of the group of friends she is the one that everyone tends to forget about and something seems to be going on with her. Next to Emily, I cannot wait to read Jackie's story.

As someone who had to deal with family members getting married and the craziness that it involves I have to say that Ms. Page has that done pact. I thought all of the scenes between Claire and Conner were done very well and you could see both sides of the issue and sympathize with them both.

Though I generally liked the novel, there were two reasons that I marked it down by one star.

The first is that I think the only that didn't ring true to me in this novel is that Claire was considered easy going by everyone that knew her until the wedding planning. Based on what I read she has seemed overbearing in all of the novels and until this novel was my least favorite character of the girlfriends. I ended up liking her more in this novel though since I could finally get a chance to see her perspective on things.

Second, was that once again Ms. Page could have ended this novel at least in two distinct places prior to the ending that she did write. Since this is fourth in a series, the next novel focusing on Emily (I cannot wait for that one!) could have had details on the wedding and aftermath.

I recommend to fans of the series!

I wanted to love this book; I really did. Unfortunately, I found myself having a lot of trouble getting through all of it. There were so many things that could have been handled better here, and I felt that it ended up dragging on much longer than necessary. I found most of the characters interesting, although the main character started to grate on my nerves after awhile. I truly expected her to end up becoming a wedding designer herself after realizing that she knew what to do and had a better handle on it than the one she had. Instead, Claire let the terrible wedding planner steal money from her parents instead of following through with her about the things she was supposed to be doing. She also put a lot of added stress on her friends who were already being pretty dadgum gracious in helping her out, especially her friend who was trying to start her own bakery.

There were so many ways that this book could have been a lot more fun. I feel bad for leaving a less than great review, especially one not entirely detailed, but I highly doubt this one will get another read on my Kindle because it just wasn't good enough the first time around.

No one was more surprised than me by how much I enjoyed When Girlfriends Chase Dreams! I mean it is a wedding book. A serious wedding book all about Claire planning her dream wedding and all the ups and downs that come with it. And I don't normally care about any of that. I am not a wedding person. I don't watch any of those shows like Say Yes to the Dress or anything, I find it all pretty boring. And I didn't have a traditional wedding so...I just don't care about it. I enjoyed the prior books so much though, some also surprising how much I enjoyed them, so I thought why not give it a go? Maybe it will surprise me too. And it did! I loved reading Claire and everything she goes through.

Claire is finally getting married to her long term boyfriend Connor. She has been with him since college and it has taken a bit to get here, but he finally proposed so Claire is all set to plan her dream wedding. Only pretty much right away things don't go exactly as planned. But that is okay. Claire is resourceful and will find a way to get what she wants. Oh, she is definitely a bridezilla and she gets a bit crazy as the wedding gets closer and closer and things start really going out of control. Poor Connor and her friends who have to try and deal with super stressed out Claire. They are all there to help out however they can, but there is only so much one can do for some things. These books are really great reads and I love how you can see how close these grilfriends are. How they are always there for you and will do anything to help out. Claire might be stressed, might go a bit crazy, but they all love her and are there for her no matter what. I can't believe how much I enjoyed reading about someone planning a wedding, but enjoy it I did. I was so happy for Claire and glad to catch up with what is going on with the other girlfriends as well.

Whereas it is well written, and maybe because I came in on book 4, this book did not resonate with me. It also might be that my dream wedding was polar opposite, and if I had treated my bridesmaids/mother/fiancee like that, they would have a come to Jesus with me. I was flabbergasted with how self centered the main character was, how everyone let her get away with it because it was her "big day", and the mindset behind how she justified it.

It is well written, and has strong characters, it just wasn't the book for me.

Perhaps it's because I never wanted the big wedding, but I just couldn't relate to the protagonist. To be frank, she annoyed the stuffing out of me. So whiny and insecure at the drop of a hat... which, as the author kept reminding me, was SO out of character for her. I couldn't really bring myself to care about her wedding or her friends or anything else. I felt like I was reading in a vat of slow moving molasses. I only made it 20% of the way through, according to my Kindle app, and I honestly thought I should've been closer to 80%. I can't recommend this at all.

I liked many of the characters in this book. Unfortunately the main female character, the bride trying to plan her wedding turned into a bit of a bridezilla. She was lucky to have such good friends who kept helping her out. On the other hand, I thought the groom's reaction to her stress wasn't very helpful or even realistic. Fortunately, the ending turned out well and I started to like the happy couple towards the end.

A nice romantic comedy

This is a good clean romantic comedy. It wasn't what I thought it would be, though. I was so bored I finally gave it up. I am sure that there are others who would really like it, but I didn't.

It was ok; started off slow for me but eventually picked up. I didn't realize that this was part of a series, so I do plan to go back and read the others. The heroine was a bit bratty, but sweet. I love a good love story with a happy ending, so it all worked out in the end!

Not quite what I thought it would be. While the storyline itself was interesting, the story kept going on and on and on... as a result, didn't enjoy it as much. I am sure that there are others who would really like it, but not my cup of tea.

Boring

Way too long with nearly no twists. Not worth wasting time on. Maybe a good gift for a bridzilla, but they wouldn't have time to read it anyway...

BFFs & Wedding Drama, But A Cute Realistic Lengthy Read

My reason for choosing to read this book was for nostalgia's sake, plain and simple. However this book was anything but plain and simple. Sure it was a light read in that it could be taken at face value, but the book had some emotional depth in it's character's situations that were rather thought provoking, which was not at all what I was expecting. In fact this book is apparently the forth in the series of When Girlfriends by Savannah Page. Rest assured a reader can begin with this book or just read this book by itself, as I did, and I'll explain why.

The book is about Claire Linley and her looong and rather tumultuous journey to walk down the aisle to say the words to finally become Mrs. Conner Whitley. Claire honestly thought that after getting that ring from her fiancé, Connor, in the awesome movie like proposal that all would kind of fall into place. However things just do not go her way and the whole DIY wedding is not working out for her, even with the aid of her BFFs, emphasis on the 'S'. Claire has Sophia the baker and chef (and closest BFF), Lauren the go get them businesswoman, Emily the photographer and traveling free-spirit, Jackie newly-wed to the rich husband with all the perks that come with it, and Robin the friend who has the cutest baby they all love Rose. How do I know all that? Well author goes over not just Claire's life but her friends lives as well. It's great if you aren't familiar with the series, but it makes the book too lengthy at times. Especially when the story is supposed to be about the wedding and Claire not everyone else in detail.

Truthfully I was looking for light read, possibly RomCom, to just relax and remember my fond memories of being a bridesmaid for one of my BFFs. This book however, was so not about that, I've read books like that and this was not a light read laughing all the time book. No, this book went for reality with a touch of humor to help it along. Claire may have had disaster after disaster happen to her, and allowed the stress and worry turn her into a Bridzilla, whom I wanted to shake and shout at to get her attention, girl seriously needed a high dose of chill pill. I mean poor Connor just had to take it and her friends, Oh I got a bit frustrated at them, but not until two thirds into the story when things really seemed awful and bleak for Claire, did I really start liking the book. I know odd right? But finally real life dawned for Claire, she started figuring out the wedding wasn't going to solve everything so why should it BE your everything. I think that's a moral truth for a lot of situations not just weddings.

Overall, I liked the book. This was my first book that I have read by Savannah Page and it might not be my last. I wish the book just hadn't bee so lengthy, because at times Claire would ramble off and I felt myself wanting to skip pages going 'And this is relevant?' I suppose a reader wants to get to know the character and since the author seemed to be going for something more than a superficial story about planning a wedding, so I could see why she would give so much more dialogue and background, but it still felt too much. Despite the length I still loved Claire and Connor's story, their story alone could be a separate novel that would be super cute and great to read. So if you want a good book with some BFFs, drama, wedding plans that go awry, and a book that's a bit lengthy check this book out.

What do best girlfriends do when one of their own is chasing the wedding planning dream?

In When Girlfriends Chase Dreams, the fourth installment of the When Girlfriends ... collection, author Savannah Page transports the reader back to Seattle for another visit with the six best girlfriends that we've come to know and love: Claire, Sophie, Robin, Lara, Jackie and Emily. This time it's Claire's turn to tell her story! After nagging longtime boyfriend Conner Whitley to get married, Conner finally proposed to Claire in When Girlfriends Make Choices, now it's time for Claire to plan her wedding in eight months . Claire takes the reader along for the ride on her journey to the altar with hilarious wedding plan mishaps and bridezilla moments, and in true bestie spirit, her five girlfriends are there to share in all the joy that wedded bliss will bring the bride-to-be.

There is nothing more enjoyable than reading a Chick Lit story about weddings, especially when you can relate to all the drama that the bride-to-be goes through when she is planning her special day. In When Girlfriends Chase Dreams, I found myself nodding my head, laughing and reminiscing about my own wedding as I followed Claire's journey down the wedding planning path to the altar. Every best laid plan can have snags, and Claire has her share in this entertaining story. Disagreements with her parents, picking fights with Conner, DYI snafus (and boy can I relate to these as I too did craft items for my wedding), to wedding planner and dress issues, our bridezilla sure had a hard time making final wedding plan decisions, but seriously girls... whose wedding plans have gone perfectly smooth with no hiccups?!

I really enjoyed catching up with all six girlfriends, the author does a great job of intertwining all of the latest news about each of the girls within the main storyline. She has a smooth style of integrating snippets from the previous books' storylines into the current book that makes it easy for the reader to feel like they haven't missed a thing while waiting to read the next installment in the collection. This is such a fun collection to read, the six girlfriends continue to show what true friendship is all about: through good and bad times, thick and thin, ups and downs, and every trial and tribulation that befalls them, these six lovely ladies are supportive and always there for each other. I am looking forward to reading about Emily's story in the next installment in the collection, When Girlfriends Take Chances.

If you are looking for a fast-paced, thoroughly fun and entertaining collection of Chick Lit stories that celebrates womanhood and the strong bonds of friendship, then When Girlfriends ... is a must read, you won't be disappointed!

Did I enjoy this book: I did enjoy this book. I read every free chance I had and finished it in about a day. I think this is my favorite one so far in the series. I was smiling the entire time I was reading this book.

Claire has been waiting a looooong time to get engaged to her long-term (almost 10 years, in fact) boyfriend, Conner. After a super romantic proposal in Paris, it’s all about the wedding. And Claire has become a – too put it bluntly – bridezilla. Claire is an obsessed, Pinterest-pinning, fiance-driving-nuts, all out bridezilla. Even when she hires a wedding planner (UGH!), she is still crazy. I found it funny.

I don’t think I will ever understand the stress that so many brides put themselves under while planning their wedding. I planned my wedding in about 6 months. That was from getting engaged, booking 2 days’ venues (we married one day and had the reception the next), making our own invitations/response cards/table cards, and finding the dress, tux, etc. I don’t get all of the stress and drama. However, the stress and drama does make for some really fun reading!

Poor Conner. He’s a great guy and he put up with – and was incredibly supportive in his own way – so much from Claire. Even her best friends were there for her while telling her that she needed to calm down. Claire had some really great OMG! moments while preparing for her wedding. Conner and Claire had some pretty bad blowouts, too. Claire’s parents didn’t help the stress with their demands, additions to the guest list, and unwanted suggestions. The wedding planner hired by Claire was a ditz. But she was an interesting character to throw into the mix.

I loved Robin’s announcement at the end. *SQUEEEEE* And Sophie’s new shop, The Cup and The Cake, sounds fabulous! I would love to eat there and I love the name! I’m excited for Lara and the progress she has made. Emily is still hanging around, not ready to move on just yet. All of the girls are doing well. I loved how this book ended.

All-in-all, this was a fun read that kept me glued to my Kindle from start to finish.

Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book, especially if you have read the other books in the When Girlfriends series.

Will I read it again: I may read this book again. It was a fun read. I can’t wait to read When Girlfriends Take Chances.

(I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Drama, Drama, Drama. Claire is normally an easy going person but with the wedding so soon, she pretty much becomes bridezilla - For good reason. With so much problems going on with the wedding I couldn't help but feel bad for the character and hope my wedding in the future doesn't turn out like this. Its pretty much every bride-to-be nightmare to go through.

I found myself enjoying this book. All the mishaps and such kept me wanted to know what would happen to poor ol Claire. I also was feeling bad for her husband-to-be Conner who pretty much had the backlash of all of Claire troubles not being able to do anything but listen to her nagging. No matter what he tried to do to help out it he ended up getting yelled at. I loved her best friends, those are the kinds of friends that I need someone who help me out through the tough times and keep me sane.

Overall I loved this book and with how this book turned out I'll be sure to check out the other books in this When Girlfriends (series?). I didn't see a series title but I know there is more books with the When Girlfriends ... title so I'm assuming they are connected and is a series that has a story for each friends I'll have to check that out after I'm done writing this post.

Highly Recommend!

Savannah Page is now on tour with CLP Blog Tours and When Girlfriends Chase Dreams

I have been absolutely loving this series, and I was so excited to get to Claire’s story because...I am a future bride just like her! I knew this book would be amazing for me to read because of the timing, and it simply turned out to be one of my favorites of the year. I could relate so well to Claire’s journey – all the things going wrong and turning out different than she expected, along with all the stress that comes with planning a wedding. I felt like we were two peas in a pod all the way through, when I laughed, when I had tears in my eyes, and when I was so thrilled for her in the end that she got her happy ending – just not the way she might have expected it! This book also taught me a lot of really good lessons when it comes to planning my own wedding, the stress and headaches that I am now dealing with on a daily basis, and what it truly means to be a wife. I’m really excited for the next book and to keep reading about this group of girlfriends!

This book starts of slowly and I never really got into it, the main character Clare constantly whining about her wedding and what she wanted practically all the way through the book, was so annoying. While any bride gets stressed this character took it to the extreme and I really didn't like her, and felt that her fiancé would be better off without her.

The writing was okay but it didn't grip me and make me care about the characters at all, the fiancée did not seem to care about the wedding until the very last minute and was so blasé about it, I wondered why they were bothering to get married.

Frankly if the only dream Clare can chase is getting her dream wedding then she is very shallow - at least until the end.

I won't be looking for any of the others in the series, but I would read them if they came up as a free e-book download.

DNF at 33%!

How can anyone give this more than 2 stars? It was mind-numbingly boring and read like a cheesy B-Rated chick-flick. I could picture it as a movie, maybe one starring Jessica Biel or Scarlett Johanson and women everywhere gushing over how wonderful the movie was. As a book, I hated it. I couldn't get over how incredibly shallow and juvenile Claire was and through the whole portion of the book I read I wanted to shake the daylights out of her just for being such a brat. I wanted to give up at 12% because there was simply too much back story, but I pressed on just to see how things went with Melissa. Now I guess I'll just have to ask someone who managed to make it all the way through this tedious piece of nonsense.

This was an awful and stupid book. The characters are depthless and saccharine filled. Claire is a selfish woman who will destroy anything and everyone to get that stupid "dream" wedding, which reaches beyond $50,000! She's the perfect bridezilla. The only thing that finally gets her head on straight is her fiancé telling her he doesn't care about anything but marrying her and her obsession is destroying them. This main character annoyed the hell out of me. I could barely finish this book. I can't even give it a single star. Sorry Ms. Page!

This is the 3rd book of this series I've read, all out of order. I actually really enjoyed the other two but this one for me wasn't as enjoyable. I'm not sure if it was because it was all about weddings, which holds no interest to me, but I cared more about the other characters lives and learning more about them than I did of Claire and her wedding.

It was okay. I didn't have much hope for it at the beginning, but as I read on I started to feel a bit more sympathy for Claire. Very wedding focussed however. I'm glad I avoided most of that fuss!

I would be interested in trying to read some of the other books in this series to see if I like them more or not.
