I have a lot of respect for Kay Robertson for standing by her man until he decided to pull himself together and follow God and become the man he was meant to be. And I respect her for doing all she does to hold the family together with good food and family gatherings. That’s hard work!

I purchased this book at full price back in 2013 from Amazon. The first recipe I tried was her “Nutty Good Oatmeal Cookies” (p. 78), the page is still dog-eared, and I haven’t made a different cookie ever since. My grandies just love them and so do I…except I prefer walnuts over pecans in my cookies.

This is a wonderful cookbook with great family photos and stories and remarks on each recipe by the one who created and presented the recipe, or by the family member who simply grew up loving it.

RECIPES TESTED

- Nutty Good Oatmeal Cookies - p. 78 (The best ever! These are the only cookies I have made now for the past 9 years. I use walnuts instead of pecans. All my grandies LOVE them!)

- Phil’s Jambalaya - p. 119 ( Good flavor, but not Cajun jambalaya. Southwest Louisiana jambalaya must be different than our northern Yankee neighbors. Sorry Phil, but I like mine better.)

I’m not done with this cookbook!

So far I have made the Cheesy Corn Casserole (my fave),Jase's Fave creamed Potatoes (Yummy), and Jep's Meatloaf choice..I have not never ever ever been a big meatloaf fan (icky), but my family all loves it so I make it, and with Miss Kay's recipe I actually was like OMG & WOW this meatloaf is DELISH!!!)This is now 1 of my favorite cookbooks!I have to get my own copy for sure!!
*** Wahoooo! I won this book via: Goodreads First Reads! I can't wait to get it!!! ***

Not sure why I bothered with this - I'm not a huge fan of the show. The food is OK - lots of comfort staples, but almost everything is fried. I had hoped to get a good desert out of it, but while the recipes are OK, I've got them already, possibly in a better form (Texas sheet cake, anyone?). I had also hoped for more Cajun-inspired recipes.

The potluck chapter is probably the most useful. The information on cooking game would also be handy if you have a hunter in the family. And the dedication to her daughters-in-law was touching, as were the very appropriate inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout.

If you're a fan of the show, you really should check this out. Otherwise, I'd skip it - there are much better sources for LA-inspired recipes.

Recipes You’ll Make Today And Years To Come

I’ve never seen more than a commercial for the show so I wasn’t sure what a cookbook from the matriarch would entail, but was more than pleasantly surprised.

I’m in a household with someone with multiple food allergies and I don’t own anything cast iron, so a lot of the recipes were immediately off the table. However I found simpler recipes for things I already prepare such as chili with beans, fried shrimp and cornbread. Very few of the recipes require me to buy something I don’t already have such as cream of tartar, so I can start cooking today.

The recipes are simply worded with clear measurements and cooking techniques you already know how to use. Pictures are provided for some dishes along with all the recipes having a few words at the end to offer tips and serving suggestions.

This was really a great read for a random selection in the Page to Screen category.

Absolutely Loved this Cookbook!

This cookbook was to me a divine treat! More than just the recipes, but the comments on each one, the family stories and of course the Scriptures. It made me smile, laugh out loud in some places, and brought back fond memories if my own rural up bringing. Especially when I saw the recipe for squirrel and dumplings! My grandfather was an avid hunter and many was the time when dinner was whatever he managed to bring home at the end of the day. He loved squirrel, but I never could bring myself to try it, but my grandmother made it for him using much the same recipe as the one featured here. This was back in the 1950's, so I guess all southern cooks had to come up with ways to make the wild game tasty.

Again, this cookbook was a delight from beginning to end. Faith, food and family. Isn't that what life is all about? Kudos Miss Kay!

👑 Her children shall rise up and call her blessed...👑

I've searched cookbooks and magazines for a while looking for a recipe for fried apple pies made in a skillet resembling one of my mom's favorite childhood memories from the Great Depression (the 1930s one) when there wasn't a lot to eat. No surprise to me that Miss Kay would not only have it but with instructions that match the stories of how my mom remembers watching them being made! And so many other yummy, easy recipes that I bought the real book as I do not trust my sloppiness to try to follow a recipe from my Kindle! I've loved and respected the Robertsons for years, they're our kind of people. God bless them all and Miss Kay for staying firm in their faith - and helping me surprise my mom! 👉❤👈

Not really my kind of food and i have never watched the show. Interesting section on wild game cooking, but I'm a vegetarian. Good for wild hog eaters.

I enjoyed this book. The Robertsons are my kinda people, and I know these kinds of people. So they are familiar and likeable folks. The recipe selection and discussion was warm and folksy, and provided insights into the Robertson family and their history. I tried several of the recipes for a Duck Dynasty Marathon. The food wasn't special. I cooked what I already had ingredients for, and food that appealed to my tastes. Tried the Nutty Oatmeal Cookies. Just alright, nothing special, and over-baked by 2 minutes. Tried the Strawberry Pie. Much more difficult to prepare than the recipe indicates (3 min cooking time = more like 30) and flavor, not remarkable. Tried Willie's Famous Chicken Strips, so ordinary! Plus what a waste of the oil, and the after-guilt of frying food when there are healthier ways to prepare the same things. My tastes are not that sophisticated, and I'm a decent competent cook and baker, but there just wasn't much unusual or special or tasty about the recipes I fixed. I have a decent selection of cast iron fry pans that haven't been used recently so I also tried the pan seasoning method Kay describes. This left my nice pan just entirely sticky, so started over with just a clean soft-to-the-touch pan. There are more recipes I'll try, and I like the lore and stories more than the food prep, so overall I liked the book.

One of the newer cookbooks in my collection. It came to me by way of a door prize. Since a large part of the show centers around food, I had high expectations for this cookbook. Too high. If you are a beginner cook, then there are a few easy, make it in 30 minutes or less recipes which should appeal, i.e. Pecan Chicken. Otherwise, I think this is more for fans of the show rather than cooks. There is a section which uses only game such as squirrels or ducks. This may appeal to those who hunt, but I don't have access to those meats in my urban grocery store. I found a man at my church who gave me some duck meat to try a few of those recipes, and they were OK. I think I would like them better if I just used pork or chicken as duck can be very fatty and gets tough quickly. There are two highlights - the biscuit recipe and Hummingbird Cake. I made the biscuit recipe a few times, and it came out great every time. Hummingbird Cake is a southern classic, and I've had many versions through the years. This one is easier to make than my usual version, and while I think it's good, it isn't as great as the one you can get from Southern Living's website. An excellent beginner recipe though. Fans of the show will enjoy the commentary on each recipe. This would make a fun gift for just the right someone but not for serious cooks.

1. I loved the quotes, Bible verses, and anecdotes within the book. They made the book come alive. Like the quote in this book by Thomas Keller said, "A recipe has no soul. You, as the cook must bring soul to the recipe." Miss Kay's stories bring soul to this book.
2. I look forward to trying many of these recipes out. I'm a little tentative about some of them because of their nature, some because I'm lazy and don't want to work that long on them, and some because I have no clue where I would find the ingredients. But there are so many easy and easy to find ingredient recipes in this book, too.
3. I think it's really neat and special that Kay wrote this book with Korie's mom, Chrys Howard.
4. The love that their family has for each other is inspiring and contagious.
5. I also loved all of the food and family pictures included in the book.
6. I wouldn't mind owning this book. Hint hint, husband.
7. I also love that she doesn't assume that you know things. She breaks down what she means by certain things: even boiling eggs!

Loved it--the title says it all. "Faith, Family, and Food--Bringing Our Home to Your Table." There are 2-3 page introductions of each chapter, telling a fun anecdote or two about family members and also sharing their family's strength and faith. Then, each recipe page also has a short paragraph by a family member, telling about the dish and why it's special to them, and/or giving hints, tips, and tricks for success in making it. Not only does each recipe page list the ingredients and steps to cooking it, they also list the materials needed. So I could see at a glance if a recipe was going to involve a cast-iron skillet (I don't have one). I appreciated that.

I went right ahead and tried one of the recipes: Pecan Chicken. It got an enthusiastic double thumbs up from both myself and N, and has been added to our repertoire. It's chicken sliced into thin strips, browned lightly, then put in a casserole dish and covered with a butter-pecan-maple syrup sauce and baked further. Mmm... all that buttery pecan goodness... I'll be trying more recipes from this cookbook!

I admit that I'm surprised by how much I liked this book! I entered to win it through First Reads so that I could give it to a friend. It arrived today and I read it cover to cover so that I could review it. While it does have a section of wild game recipes that I won't be cooking from (though my friend might), I actually took note of many recipes that I am going to try - from meals to sides to desserts. I put it on my Christian shelf and memoir shelf in addition to my cookbook shelf because interspersed with the recipes are Bible passages and stories about Miss Kay and the Robertsons.

I can't believe I won another book through Goodreads First Reads! A very good friend is a hunter and got a group of us into watching Duck Dynasty together each week. It is completely ridiculous show, and I never would have watched it on my own, but it is funny. So, I entered this to give as a gift to my friend - after I read and review it of course!

For the family and faith portions of the cookbook, 5 stars. Very sweet, nice to see all the old family pictures, and fun to read. I definitely enjoyed the book on the basis of Miss Kay's anecdotes alone.

For the food portion... 2 stars. I doubt I would make anything in this cookbook. I either already have a similar recipe that I don't need to replace, or, well, these just don't sound as good. There is a lot of fried food and a lot of cheese and cream and condensed soup and butter. I can't believe Miss Kay's skinny-minnie daughters in law take more than a few bites of any of this food.

I've read two Duck Dynasty character (yes, I'm calling them characters, it's a SHOW and I doubt anyone really acts completely like that in real life) books now and I think I'll just stick to the show from now on.

Along with faith and family, food is a big part of what holds the Robertson family of "Duck Dynasty" fame together, and it's the family matriarch, Miss Kay, who holds the spoon that keeps the pots full of delicious meals for her brood.

Miss Kay shares some of her best family recipes in her new cookbook, "Miss Kay's Duck Commander Kitchen," which she has put together with the help of Chrys Howard. (Crys is Korie, Willie Robertson's wife's mother!) And this book is not only filled with some yummy sounding recipes, it's chalk-full of family photos and funny little notes from Miss Kay herself.

I loved this book and I'm sure I'll be referring back to it often - although I think I'll pass on the Squirrel and Dumplings.

Gotta say that I was actually really impressed with this cookbook! The book was focused on "down home" recipes and a number of them were pretty well known/common recipes that are easy to find, but with Miss Kay's Cajun twist to them.

Just a warning...there are recipes in there for the "game" or critter. I totally bypassed that section. I never see myself eating squirrel or frog.

There are numerous recipes that call for the family's Cajun seasoning. I prefer to make my own as the better chunk of these commercially available seasonings are loaded down with salt. Paula Deen has done this with her seasoning and I revamped it to cut down on the salt.

Lovely cookbook! I loved how she made it into not just a cookbook but almost as a family book, full of pictures, stories, and nothing but good words about everyone, and how she demonstrates her faith. I also love that she had other people put in their recipes as well and not just her own.
As for the food, my favourite so far is the mac and cheese, good old fashioned southern cooking. Is she the best cook in the world? I do have better cookbooks but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I definitely want to try other stuff. The only thing is, I'm not used to all that butter!
Definitely not a health book!

What a great cookbook. Can't wait to try some of her recipes, especially the corn casserole. I found that she and I cook a lot alike. This book was very well put together and very well written. Loved the pictures of the family and the stories. Enjoyed the Bible quotes and how The Lord Is So Much Apart Of Their Family! I watch The Duck Commander Show and HIGHLY dislike how they make Miss Kay look like a dumb, backwoods woman who is in actuality is a very smart woman as this book reveals!
Congrats Miss Kay, What A Great Way To Reveal You And Your Recipes...

This book goes through Kay's husband and sons favorite dishes, the dishes her daughters' in laws like to make, kids foods, and food for a crowd.

I haven't tried the recipes yet, but the book was set up with a cute antidote at the beginning of each chapter and tips throughout.

Not a fan of how the book was laid out: if you are looking for how to cook an item specifically then it could be hard to find that item flipping through the pages. However, the meals did have good twists to them that I can't wait to try!

Got it for Christmas and I was so surprised. It's shockingly good! It's charming, witty, religious, uplifting, easy-to-follow, and the recipes are downright delicious. I'll admit, I was expecting nothing but Squirrel Brains Stew, and there is a chapter on Wild Game Recipes (which look good, btw), but the rest is all good, hearty, normal Southern food. Already made the Spoon Butter Rolls, Roasted Beef & Vegetable Soup, and the Chocolate Pie --- all YUM! Can't wait to try the rest. Very happy if a cookbook can give me at least 3 to 5 good, solid recipes, and this one looks to have about 30!

Many recipes in here are Miss Kay's version of recipes we already have, but her extras add so much. This is the first book I grab now when planning meals.

Beware of the number of servings each recipe makes if you're a small family unless, like us, you don't mind left overs.

The Pecan Pie recipe was a huge hit in our family surpassing the tried and true recipe of my mother's. Even mom liked it better than her own recipe. Enough said.

When I got this book I was a little nervous that the only recipes in this book would be for wild game. I was pleasantly surprised that almost all of the recipes are "regular" food. I like how the book is divided with some of her kid's favorite things to eat and then her grandkids etc. I also like that there was a comment on every recipe from either Miss Kay or one of the other members of the family. It has great pictures and easy to follow recipes.

Best cookbook I've ever owned, hands down. We live quite a ways out of town and I regularly feed a large ranch crew. The recipes in this book aren't hard to make, are made with ingredients that most have on hand, and are plain old delicious! I always make "Miss Chys's Potatoes", "Corn Casserole", "Sour Cream Cake" (try it with the caramel frosting used in the banana cake), and "Everybodys Favorite Crunch Salad". Great recipes for a crowd!

While I won't be making any squirrel recipes anytime soon (I am a yuppie, after all), there were several recipes I would like to try. The personal touches about the Robertson family as well as the family photos were a nice touch for fans of the show. Also a fair amount of advertising for Duck Commander food products.

Fabulous! I've already made 5 or 6 things in this cookbook! The girls have both made things from this book too... And each one has been delicious. The stories are a great extra, and each recipe has notes from Miss Kay. The one thing that I wish this cookbook had: pictures for every recipe, not just some. I think all cookbooks should have pictures for each and every recipe.

I think this book would make a good addition to a new cookbook collection. It has a lot of comfort food recipes and you use a lot of butter in these recipes but it all sounds delicious. I don't follow the Duck Dynasty show but the personal stories about her family add a nice touch and she is very vocal about her faith throughout the book. I enjoyed it and will keep it in my cookbook collection.

I enjoyed reading through this, and learning more about the family. The recipes are incredibly simple (most of them) and include a wide variety of things. I doubt I will make any of the recipes at this point in time, just because they aren't too heart-healthy and let's face it-- I hardly ever cook anyway! Good job, Miss Kay. I'm glad that her "dream" has been realized in creating this book.

I received this book for Christmas and I have really enjoyed it. I've made several of the recipes already. Being a southern country girl myself, I liked that the recipes are all familiar and easy to use. I so enjoyed the personal touch she gave by putting family anecdotes throughout. Definitely a keeper!

This book is full of good country cooking, quotes, scripture, family photos & anecdotes from the Robertson family. Many of these recipes are things that I already cook. This book makes me like Miss Kay even more than I already did because it portrays her as the genuine and unpretentious woman that she is.
