The Persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands, 1940-1945

These five articles, first presented at the conference ‘The Holocaust and other Genocides. The Uses, Misuses and Abuses of the Holocaust Paradigm’ in 2011, reflect the current Dutch research on the persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands during the Second World War and recent developments in the historiography concerning this topic.
To a certain extent, the work being done in the Netherlands has reflected the international historiography in that it addresses the political and public responses to National Socialism and occupation, the nature of the persecution and the regime in the concentration camps. The perspectives of the general population, of the victims and of the perpetrators are all examined, but above all those of bystanders. In this selection of the most recent research, there is a particular emphasis on the nature of the persecution and the general public’s reaction to it.

About the author

Peter Romijn (1955) is historicus, als senior onderzoeker en hoofd Onderzoek verbonden aan het NIOD. Verder is hij sinds 2002 parttime hoogleraar Geschiedenis van de Twintigste Eeuw aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, met als leeropdracht de Geschiedenis van het openbaar bestuur in tijden van oorlog en crises. In 1989 promoveerde hij aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen op een onderzoek naar de bestraffing en re-integratie van collaborateurs in het naoorlogse Nederland. Vervolgens schreef hij een monografie over het lokaal bestuur in Nederland tijdens de Duitse bezetting, publiceerde over de Jodenvervolging in Nederland, over de strijd om politieke legitimiteit in Europa in de jaren 1930 en 1940, over de Nederlands-Indonesische dekolonisatieoorlog en over oorlogsgeschiedenis en oorlogsgeschiedschrijving en. Samen met Jan Bank stelde hij het slotdeel van het Geschiedwerk van L. de Jong (deel 14: Reacties) samen en met Hans Blom was hij eindverantwoordelijk voor het Srebrenicarapport van het NIOD (2002). Zijn huidige project heet ‘Tien jaar oorlog!’ en gaat over de continuïteit van oorlog in de Nederlandse geschiedenis van de jaren ’40.
