Bully Bean
Each picture book in the Lima Bear Stories series delivers messages for children to help them handle everyday situations with siblings and friends, including tolerance, honesty, and courage. Basic characters, each with their own distinct personality, appear and reappear throughout the series, allowing children to get to know them and anticipate how they are likely to act in different situations. Extended learning and activity questions are included to allow parents and teachers to further encourage children to become involved in the concepts presented. In the kingdom of Beandom, Bully Bean is feared. He plays mean tricks, makes fun of other beans, and puts them in danger. Lima Bear, the only bean with green fur who is always helping others, seems to be Bully Bean’s favorite bean to pick on. But what happens when Bully Bean is in danger? Will Lima Bear and his friends run away, or will they rescue him? Bully Bean expects the worst, but Lima Bear knows that treating others with kindness is the right thing to do, even though Bully Bean has bullied him for a long time. Lima Bear soon returns with a large group of friends to help rescue Bully Bean, who learns to use his large size to help with tasks in the Kingdom rather than be hurtful.

Bully Bean is a big strong bear who enjoys tormenting all the other beans; but, he especially loves giving Lima Bean the hardest time of all. Lima Bean lives in fear of being chased by Bully Bean, pushed into puddles, and thrown into holes. One day, Lima Bean takes a nice stroll into a nearby cave filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Gazing upon the color-filled wonder, Lima Bean realizes that Bully Bean has followed him into the cave and is now giving him chase. To Bully Bean's horror, a large boulder breaks off and falls on him trapping him to the ground. Looking after one of their kind, Lima Bean and his friends team up to rescue Bully Bean teaching him a lesson about forgiveness, compassion, and working together as a community.
Bully Bean is a fantastic picture book about bullying, growth, and forgiveness. We see the character of Bully Bean develop from a mean-spirited bully into a hard-working member of the community (resulting in a name change!) I also thought it was a great lesson for children that Lima Bear and his friends did not hesitate to come help Bully Bean even after he had hurt them. I loved this focus on humanity and "doing the right thing" regardless of how they had been treated by Bully in the past. As a result of this compassion, Bully completely transformed into a different bean. This reinforces what I teach my children about compassion. I also appreciate how the beans problem-solved to lift the heavy boulder in the rescue. Their first few attempts failed but they kept trying until they finally came up with an effective solution. I thought this was also a good lesson about perseverance.
The book also features beautiful, (often) full-page illustrations that are colorful and detailed. The physical book is very sturdy as are the individual pages (i.e., they will withstand the flipping of the pages). At the back of the book, there are a number of learning extensions giving parents, teachers, or librarians ideas for questions to ask before, during, and after reading the book, as well as a number of suggested activities to supplement the text. This is a terrific add-on! There is also a lovely letter from author Thomas Weck to his son Peter Weck (co-author) about their collaboration, that really moved me.
My Bottom Line:
Bully Bean is a wonderful picture book centered on bullying, forgiveness, compassion, and personal growth. I loved seeing Bully Bean transform after he is shown compassion from his victims and thought there were a number of important life lessons covered in the story. I recommend this great story for children ages 4 to 8.

My daughter started pre-school last month. She was incredibly excited and couldn’t wait to start, but along with that excitement she had some fears. What if the kids don’t like me? What if they are mean to me? What if they take my things? Although she wasn’t sure of the word, what she really was worried about was being bullied.
I was thrilled when Bully Bean appeared in my mailbox for review. It is another book in the Lima Bear Series. All the books in this series have an underlying theme of friendship, kindness and doing what is right (even when it might be hard). Each book is an independent story, but some of the characters, like our favourite Lima Bear, are reoccurring.
Despite stating the obvious, Bully Bean is the story of a Bully living in the Kingdom of Beandom. He is a mean to everyone. He plays mean tricks and puts others in danger, no one wants to be his friend. He is most often found picking on the littlest bear in all of Beandom, Lima Bear. Lima Bear is always helping others, but when Bully Bean finds himself in danger, will Lima Bear find the courage to rescue him?
This book was a great example for my daughter on how to recognize a bully and how we can react to him/her. We started to discuss why bullies act the way they do. Is it because of the things we do (or don’t do) to them? What would you do if you saw a friend being bullied? Are you a bully?
As with all the other books from Lima Bear Press, this has extra learning materials in the back. One suggestion is that you take some time to learn about Pulley’s and invent your own machine. My budding inventor thought this was great! As a parent, I would suggest taking the time to read some of these suggestions. Aside from learning about bullies, this book can help you teach your child about so much more, like homophones, mnemonics and caves!

“Oh, bad Bully Bean,
What makes you so mean?
Whenever you’re near,
We all run in fear.”
She loves to look at the pictures and tell her own story. There are little unexpected gems hidden in the pictures, like the little worm that my daughter named Sam. The artist took great care to show the expression on each little characters face. You could see their sadness and joy.
We can’t wait to read more about the citizen’s of Beandom and their next adventure!

What is the best way to handle bullying? And how should the bully be treated? In the kingdom of Beandom, Bully Bear is the tallest and strongest bean. He likes to tease and torment the other beans, and when they see him they chant, “"Oh, bad Bully Bean, What makes you so mean? Whenever you're near. We all run in fear." He especially enjoys mistreating Lima Bear who is always kind and has green fur. One day Lima Bear is in the hidden cave where the beans go to escape Bully Bean, but Bully Bean secretly follows him in. When Bully starts to chase Lima, a loose rock falls on Bully Bean and traps him. What will Lima Bear and his friends do? Will they try to help, or will they just run away?
News reports tell us that bullying is a serious problem in schools and neighborhoods for many children. The story of Bully Bean, which is Book #5 in the Lima Bear Stories, will help youngsters understand that treating others with kindness is always the right thing to do, even though someone may have bullied them for a long time. Unfortunately, not all bullies will respond as positively as Bully Bean does, but that is no reason to ignore the Bible’s advice, “Repay no one evil for evil…but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:17-21). In the back of the book, there are some extended learning questions and activities which parents and teachers can use in encouraging children to become more involved in the concepts presented. This is a well-written and nicely illustrated book that teaches children a very important lesson about applying the Golden Rule in life.
