This is a very, very cool counting book. It begins and ends in a forest in the mountains, and follows a group of adventurous bears as they venture forth into town where they cause all sorts of problems when they mingle with humans. As readers move through the pages, counting from one to 100, there is much for them to see in the brightly-hued illustrations that seem to pulse with life and movement. It's a crazy journey, one that young readers will want to take again. Plus, counting all those objects, not to mention bears, will keep them quite busy.
Loving these books with the simple illustrations in a small number of loud colors. Clever counting book, great practice for little ones. Even tells a story in a roundabout kind of way.
Une bonne idée de livre à compter cat il est rare qu'ils aillent jusqu'à 100 ! Les chiffres sont bien ficelés et forment une histoire avec des clins d'oeil à repérer. Le dessin n'est pas ce que je préfère.
A thick concept number book with about 100 pages. But this number book has a simple story about the adventures of six bears woven into it. The circular story starts with 1 forest and ends with 100 trees. A great book for celebrating the 100 days of kindergarten and all the activities associated with the event.
We read this at bedtime, and it works okay as a straight read aloud. However, it is much better as a book to stop and count the items in the illustrations and talk about the numbers. A child in a phase of liking to count would have lots of fun with this book independently.
I’m thoroughly confused by this book. It doesn’t seem very kid-friendly. First of all, when they count to five, which is good, they use pictures of hands... backwards. It would be better for early literacy for them to have used numbers. Second, there aren’t 100 bears. Third, it featured “9 Gunshots.”
The numbers they chose sometimes didn’t make sense - There were 71 matches for candles for a birthday cake. Someone was turning 72 - but there weren’t 72 candles. There were 2 in the shape of the numbers. It wouldn’t take that many matches to light those. Maybe I’m thinking too literally. It just wasn’t for me.
All of these things, plus the fact that they used different fingers to count from 1-5 made me suspect that this was a poor translation of a good book from another country.
On a completely different level, the file size must have been too big for my computer. It took forever to turn a page!
I wouldn't recommend this book to a parent for a few reasons: (1) it's so long for a child of counting age. (2) Yes, it takes kids longer to learn to count to 100, but I don't think that an incoherent story about "playful" bears will keep their attention that long. (3) The content is weird. The bears are really nasty and attack human venues... like by climbing ladders to the 15th floor of a building. (4) I think that it takes place during the holidays? The fact that I'm not sure after one reading, and I'm 32, should show that it's not great for children.
