পোলাপানদের মধ্যে আলোচনার সময় এক ধরণের কথা হয়, দেখ আমি কিন্তু জানিনা ঠিক কিন্তু ... এরপরেই যা বলার সব বলে দেয়। :3 লেখকের মধ্যে এরকম ব্যাপারটা খেয়াল করলাম। ৪৬ ব্রিগেডেই ছিলেন, তো নিজে যা দেখেছেন তা শুধু বলে গেলেই পারতেন। ইতিহাস লিখতে চাইলে ইতিহাস লিখলেই পারতেন। আর সবকিছুর জন্য Bangladesh: A Legacy of Blood -ই কেন? অন্য বই কেন নয়? যথারীতি নতুন কিছু তথ্য এবং কিছু গড়মিলও পেলাম।

বিগ্রেডিয়ার(অব.) সাখাওয়াত অমুক্তিযোদ্ধা ও পাকিস্তান-ফেরত কর্মকর্তা ছিলেন। তার বয়ান থেকে অমুক্তিযোদ্ধা কর্মকর্তা বনাম মুক্তিযোদ্ধা কর্মকর্তাদের মধ্যকার মনোমালিন্য এবং বিদ্বেষ আর অবিশ্বাসের সম্পর্কের কথা সুস্পষ্টভাবে বোঝা যায়।

জনাব সাখাওয়াত হোসেন স্বাধীনতা-পরবর্তী সময়ে সামরিক বাহিনীতে বিভিন্ন গোলযোগের জন্য মুক্তিযোদ্ধা কর্মকর্তাদের প্রতি ইঙ্গিত করেছেন।

একটি বৃত্তি নিয়ে সাখাওয়াত হোসেন ও মুক্তিযোদ্ধা কর্মকর্তা মতিউর রহমানের ( মে. জে. মঞ্জুরের ভাগনে এবং জিয়া হত্যার সরাসরি অভিযুক্ত) মধ্যে বিরোধ ছিল। এটিও তাকে মুক্তিযোদ্ধা কর্মকর্তা বিরোধী করে তোলে।

মোটকথা, তখনকার সময়কে একজন অমুক্তিযোদ্ধা কর্মকর্তার দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিতে বুঝতে বইটি সহায়ক হবে।

I often see Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hussain on TV, and I quite like his opinions on the politics of Bangladesh, especially about elections, being a former Election Commissioner, he has first-hand experience. I was enthused about reading this book when I traced it while reading a book on the assassination of former president General Zia. I am somewhat disappointed as I have just finished reading it.

M Sakhawat Hussain was in the army during a very turbulent period of our history, starting from the early 1970s. He was commissioned in the Pakistan Army but failed to join Bangladesh's War of Liberation, he joined the Bangladesh Army as part of the horde of officers who were repatriated almost two years after December 1971. Throughout the book, he has been very critical of 'freedom fighter' officers, about how giving them two-years seniority was a wrong move, how they were all over-ambitious which they were in many cases. But he has deceptively not spoken much, if at all, of the intrigues that the repatriated officers got involved in.

He has given a detailed account of why the fate of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was doomed from the very beginning, with the formation of the Rokkhi Bahini, with the political figures within the Awami League who were up to no good, not all of them, the nepotism etc. One cannot totally disagree with all his points but he seemed overzealous. He has, however, rightly pointed out the disruptive influence of Colonel Taher in Bangladesh politics and all the machinations of JSD till 1980.

He was, however, all praise for Ziaur Rahman, painting him as an uniter than the devious person that most history books tend to paint him. He made no comments about Zia's 'referendum' or how he formed the BNP. His bias is there for all to see. He also painted a very villainous picture of General Manzoor, leader of the group that assassinated Zia, totally overlooking or not exploring any hand in the killing by General Ershad. He has overlooked the 'murder' of Manzoor which allowed suppression of many facts that needed to see the light of day and the shoddy trials which killed off the alleged plotters and killers.

In the writing of this book he has drawn too heavily from Anthony Mascarenhas' 'Bangladesh: A legacy of Blood'. That did not seem such a wise decision.

যুদ্ধ পরবর্তী অস্থির বাংলাদেশের রাজনীতি, ক্ষমতার লড়াই, ক্যু এর সব খুঁটিনাটি এ বইতে উঠে এসেছে বলা যায়। ৮০ দশকের শুরুটা বাদ দিলে ৮০-৯০ দশক বাংলাদেশ শাসন করেছে সামরিক শক্তি একথা বলাই যায়। আর এ বইয়ের লেখক একজন অবসরপ্রাপ্ত সামরিক অফিসার হবার কারণে সেই সময়ে সেনাবাহিনীর মনোভাব, ক্ষমতার দৌরাত্ম বেশ গুছিয়ে তুলে ধরেছেন। সব কিছু ভালো লাগলেও একটা জিনিস ভালো লাগেনি। তা হলো, বেশিরভাগ অভ্যুত্থানের সময়ে ঢাকা ক্যান্টনমেন্টে থেকেও লেখক ফ্যাক্টসের রেফারেন্স হিসেবে, অ্যান্থনি মাসকারেনহাসের বইকে টেনেছেন। অথচ তিনি ঘটনাস্থলে ছিলেন, প্রত্যক্ষ করেছেন। তিনি, তার বই হতে পারতো অন্য লেখকদের রেফারেন্স। এখানে হতাশ!

আর একটা জিনিস, তিনি সর্বহারা পার্টি আর কর্ণেল তাহেরকে নিয়ে কিছু বলেন নাই বললেই চলে, অথচ ৮০ দশকের রাজনীতি, অভ্যুত্থান - সবকিছুতে এনাদের ভূমিকা ছিলো অনেক।

যে আশা নিয়ে পড়েছিলাম, অতো ইনফরমেটিভ লাগেনি। বাট সারমর্ম ধাঁচের বই হিসেবে খারাপ না।

I picked up the book to know about this period of time in BD's history. At that time, I didn’t notice the writer, when I noticed he was already our home advisor. I was already pissed at him for wanting to rehabilitate BAL. It was sort of funny.

The book is not very well written but does shed some light into this time period. Very little is talked about of this time of history and I get it. It's hard to describe and talk about so many coups in such little time frame.

১৫ আগস্টে থেকে শুরু করে জিয়া হত্যার কাহিনি অবধি তুলে ধরেছে। দেশের সেনা অভ্যুত্থান সফলতা ও ব্যর্থতার কথা লিখেছেন।লেখন একজন সামরিক কর্মকর্তা ছিল বলে সব কিছুই খুব কাছে থেকে দেখেছেন।

তৎকালীন দেশের সমসাময়িক অবস্থা নিয়ে আলোচনা করেছে।

সাখাওয়াত স্যার খুব চমৎকার এবং সাবলীল ভাষায় ইতিহাস তুলে আনেন। ইতিহাসের কানাগলি, ঘটনার ফলাফল এবং পেছনের ঘটনা জানতে চমৎকার একটি বই এটি।

বইটা নিয়ে আশা একটু বেশিই ছিল । জিয়াউর রহমান সম্পর্কে কিছু তথ্য ছাড়া নতুন কিছুই নেই । এবং ম্যাসকারহেন্সের বই থেকে মাত্রা ছাড়া রেফারেন্স দেওয়া হয়েছে । এটাও ভালো লাগে নাই ।

অসাধারন একটি বই। লেখক যতটা সম্ভব নিরপেক্ষ দৃষ্টি থেকে লেখার চেষ্টা করেছেন৷ আমার পড়, স্বাধীনতার পরবর্তী ইতিহাস নিয়ে লেখা অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ বই।
