Great resource for those wanting to start an online business, especially if selling handmade goods!
I loved the way this book was written - clear & concise. Any jargon used was explained well for someone like me who is looking to start a business with no business experience or background. It was written in 2013, and things in tech & the online world can change fast, so there are a couple of chapters and information that are irrelevant today (e.g. ArtFire doesn't exist anymore). Even still, I love the way the information is presented in clear chapters so that you can read through it and complete your to-do's as you go - almost like a detailed checklist. It can be overwhelming considering opening your own business but I recommend doing things one at a time. For instance, I started with setting up my art space and office first (gave myself a week to do this) then moved onto something else. Good luck!
This is a great reference book to keep around if you're remotely interested in making a living selling arts and crafts online. It lists virtually every available avenue to do so, as well as the pros and cons of each. There is A LOT of references packed into this medium-sized book. I enjoyed the format in which it was written. I know that I will continue to use this as a reference in the future and I will also refer others to this book as well. Very informative, practical, and inspiring, this book is also well-written and easy to read. What any given reader gets out of it will, of course, depend on what the reader is looking to do with its information. If you're planning to focus your efforts on Etsy, this book will be particularly helpful; if you plan to focus elsewhere, it will probably be less so. As with pretty much any book about technology, some of the websites it talks about already seem to have gone out of vogue, while others it barely mentions (or doesn't mention) appear to have overtaken them in popularity. But, aside form these issues--which deal more with specifics--I think it offers a good amount of advice on a broad range of issues, while also covering most things with a satisfying amount of depth. Will you be left with additional questions after you're done reading this book? Definitely, and probably a lot of them--but at least you'll have a better sense of what your questions are, and how you might go about answering them. Despite the grandiose claims of its title, this book--like any book--cannot hope to tell you "everything" you'll need to know, but it's an invaluable starting point, and I'm sure I'll return to it many times in the future.
If you're thinking of selling your handmade crafts or artwork online, this may be the best place to begin, particularly if your goal is to turn a small profit from your new business. The author very nicely encourages readers to take their art seriously and explains in some detail how to create a successful marketing plan (even if you're the only one who reads it), how to identify ideal customers, the elements of good customer service, and the basics of online networking. She also addresses strategies for online promotion and suggests a wide range of free and helpful online resources for further research. Highly recommended for anyone thinking of selling their art online.
