Consolidated Separates by E.B. Burbridge is an intriguing collection built around characters confronting situations that can quickly become complicated, threatening, or simply unexpected.

The book moves across several genres and places its characters in circumstances that invite readers to ask difficult “what would you do?” questions. A managerial barracuda creates one kind of challenge, while the question of future generations receiving an education introduces a broader social concern. Elsewhere, an elderly person faces the possibility of homelessness because of property taxes, turning the realities of aging and financial security into another source of tension.

The collection also explores more immediate threats. Someone who has dozed at the wheel wakes to unwanted company. A former associate with questionable character reappears and potentially threatens the protagonist’s future, forcing the question of how such a threat can be stopped. The book's situations repeatedly place its characters in circumstances where decisions have consequences.

One of the more striking ideas involves the consequences of an inadequately educated younger generation and the possibility of vulnerable elderly people becoming prey after dark. These scenarios give the collection a social dimension alongside its personal conflicts.

The final image suggested by the collection,a person awakening to find a surgeon standing over them—captures the unpredictable nature of the book particularly well. After a lifetime of entanglements, even the unexpected can become part of the journey.

At 182 pages, *Consolidated Separates* offers readers a varied collection of situations involving conflict, aging, education, vulnerability, threats, and survival. Its greatest appeal lies in the way it continually places characters at moments when they must confront circumstances they did not necessarily expect.
